Festa patterns Charles & Ron present their new collection

Designers Ron Van Maarschalkerweerd and Charles Borg. Photos: Bernard Polidano A feast of patterns and soft summer colours inspired by the traditional Maltese festa went on show at the Charles & Ron spring/summer 2014 collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Malta this week. Designers Ron Van Maarschalkerweerd and Charles Borg used elaborate design patterns displayed on the drapes seen during village feasts, known as pavaljuni and bandalori, as inspiration. The beautiful, printed silk fabrics were then draped to fit a modern woman and lace flowers cut into patterns and applied to organdie dresses and skirts were also clearly inspired by the baroque festa decorations. Similar patterns also return as intricate, laser-cut designs on several gold pieces in the colourful Feast Patterns collection, based on nougat colours with gold and broken white. Fashion stylist Caroline Paris wrote on her blog: “Over the years, it always becomes more and more apparent that Charles and Ron love contrasts and to complement the bright hues were some beautiful pastel fabrics. The designers also launched their first leather bag collection at the show. The event, sponsored by Estetika the cosmetic clinic, took place in the Sacra Infermeria Hall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Charles & Ron will show part of this collection again at the Vodafone Malta Fashion Awards tomorrow and also for French guests during a private fashion show later this month. They will then take the collection to Sibiu, Romania, where they will participate at the Feeric Fashion Days in June.

Faculty of Arts Dean’s List Awards, sponsored by BOV Posted By Gozo News On May 10, 2013 @ 3:43 pm In Malta News | No Comments

The Dean’s List awards for the University of Malta’s Faculty of Arts were presented by the Dean of The Faculty, Professor Dominic Fenech, on May 2nd. This year, three students qualified for the Dean’s List. They are Mr Glen Bonnici (B.A. Honours Italian), Ms Yanika Bugeja (B.A. Honours Philosophy) and Ms Giulia Privitelli (B.A. Honours History of Art). These students will be graduating in November 2013. Presenting the awards Professor Fenech explained that, with at least two-thirds of the credits of the first two years obtained at Grade ‘A’ or higher, only the very top students, about one in hundred, qualified to have their name included in the Dean’s List. Congratulating the students, he noted with satisfaction that all three of them hailed from what some call the south of Malta, an area where student enrolment into university courses was relatively low. He wished them the very best in their future studies and careers. The Dean also warmly thanked Bank of Valletta for their sponsorship, noting that this was the sixteenth year that the Bank acted as the sole sponsor of this prestigious academic award. Representing the sponsors, Ms Vanessa Macdonald, Head of Media and Community Relations, explained that Bank of Valletta was happy to support academic excellence among students in general, and in particular was delighted to be the sole sponsor of the Faculty of Arts Dean’s List. Bank of Valletta believed that good academic preparation was the foundation to a successful career for students and a support for the country’s social and economic progress. She added her congratulations and presented the students with cash prizes.

Go plc chairman explains company strategy at AGM

Go chairman Deepak Padmanabhan addressing the 15th AGM at the Hilton Malta. Go plc chairman Deepak Padmanabhan reiterated the company’s commitment to continue with its €100 million, six-year investment programme when he addressed shareholders at the annual general meeting at the Hilton Malta recently. While significant investments are ongoing, Mr Padmanabhan highlighted the importance of fair and balanced regulation as a necessity to maintain this significant investment programme in order to safeguard the interests of shareholders. The group registered a pre-taxprofit of €17.3 million. Despite this positive performance, he acknowledged that 2012 was a challenging year for Go in view of pressure on disposable income and a telecommunications market that is highly competitive with aggressive, and sometimes almost irrational, erosion of margins and value. Mr Padmanabhan explained that as the economic situation in Greece remains critical, the financial performance of Forthnet, the telecoms company in which Go has a stake through a joint venture, did not improve significantly in spite of Forthnet increasing its customer base. Go’s remaining exposure to Forthnet has been reduced to nil. Chief executive officer Yiannos Michaelides highlighted how the group has embarked on a programme aimed at revamping product lines and the way Go does business with a view to ensure that Go remains the operator of choice for the majority of consumers. Chief finance officer Edmond Brincat briefed shareholders on initiatives to extract value from the group’s extensive property portfolio. Malta Properties Co Limited, the special-purpose vehicle established to pursue this strategy, now holds title over a portfolio valued at €50 million.

Catch the Drop poster competition

Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi with students of Newark School. Newark School has won the Catch the Drop poster competition with its entry Every Little Helps. Catch the Drop is a national environmental and educational campaign for sustainable water, sponsored by HSBC Bank. To raise awareness, 460 primary and secondary students from 13 schools gathered in front of St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta carrying signs and slogans promoting the sustainable use of water. ‘‘The campaign offers a strategic path towards sustainable water conservation in Malta. The bank’s funding will breathe new life and energy into the initiative and will contribute towards its implementation over the next three years,” said Francis Sullivan, regional head of Corporate Sustainability, Europe and adviser on the environment. A song was also composed by two teachers from Newark School. The lyrics were written by Tania Pintley, while music was composed by Alessandro Guintini. School principal Rosanne Galea said these initiatives were a great way to teach children about the environment and particularly about the use of water. Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi gave out the prize during a presentation ceremony at the Barrakka Gardens, Valletta.
