Go gearing up for 4G and national fibre rollout

Go has welcomed recent developments at a regulatory level which should facilitate the rollout of ultra-fast broadband internet access to Maltese homes, known as fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). Furthermore it is willing to allow third parties to use its upgraded fibre network to provide their data services within a “fair” framework. In an interview with i-Tech, Go’s chief technical officer, Kelvin Camenzuli, reveals the company’s plans in this regard and the extent of the technical upgrade which the company has gone through in the past months to be in a better position to cater for the ever-increasing communication needs of the country. “Go is greatly encouraged by recent developments, both at EU level, and with the pace at which the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) is reacting to these changes. Commissioner Nellie Kroes has indeed made a number of positive statements on both the regulatory approach and the pricing of services to third parties who use the FTTH infrastructure.

With every new network element introduced, engineers and system specialists undergo extensive training to ensure there is full local support in case an issue occurs “Last September the Commission also published a recommendation on the treatment of broadband investment which provides much better visibility and security to investors. These are heartening signals of a clear break from the previously rigid stance on regulation. “The recent interview in i-Tech with the chairman of the MCA, Edward Woods also made reassuring reading. His specific reference to the EU recommendation, and his vision of the MCA’s role as a facilitator and motivator, as well as a regulator, is also worthy of note. We believe that Maltese businesses and consumers stand to benefit once sustainable and fair investment programmes in FTTH are encouraged,” Mr Camenzuli said.

CLIENT: MEDIUM: DATE:

GO DIRECT TIMESOFMALTA.COM 27 FEBRUARY 2014

Go has already rolled out its FTTH service to a large part of Sliema and Lija to conduct an extensive field test. “Obviously, the pace at which we can roll out FTTH could change considerably when the current positive signals translate into clear policy decisions. Go does not object to allowing third parties to offer their services over its network. But this has to be done within a framework that is fair, that takes the local competitive situation into account and that is not overly burdensome on the company that is putting in the investment to create the network in the first place.” The company’s chief technical officer revealed that 2013 has been a “transformational” year at Go, when it partnered with leading telecommunications equipment providers and embarked upon a technology-refresh programme. This will ensure that its current key networks will be kept updated with the latest technology developments for the next five to seven years, thus giving the company the opportunity to invest in new technologies. The company has signed a major technology refresh agreement with Ericsson which is currently upgrading the fixed line core network; it has also invested in two new data centres in Mosta and Żejtun, updated its electrical power systems across various sites and improved the resiliency of the international submarine cables joining Malta to Sicily and mainland Europe. Mobile internet is another area where investment through Alcatel Lucent should provide better speeds and a smoother customer experience. Mobile transmission stations are no longer connected through microwave links but are linked up via fibre cables. “Thanks to this superior level of connectivity, we have eliminated bottlenecks in the mobile backhaul network. This allows us to offer a mobile internet experience that is difficult for our competitors to match while they continue to use copper or microwave backhaul networks. This is the fundamental building block of a true 4G network experience,” Mr Camenzuli insisted. Go has also contracted a major upgrade to its intelligent network platform and carried out a major upgrade on billing and order management systems to be able to provide better commercial offers and a better customer experience. A new fraud management platform was also deployed last September. “With every new network element we introduce, our engineers and system specialists undergo extensive training to ensure we have full local support in case an issue occurs. Over and above that, we then contract major companies like Alcatel, Ericsson, Cisco or NSN to provide us with 24x7 support to assist our teams in case of need. We have a very clear plan of investment across all four areas of service we provide and we are committed to providing holistic, hassle-free entertainment and communications. Expect to hear plenty of exciting news in the months ahead,” Go’s chief technical officer concluded.

Bank of Valletta supports Inspire

Thursday, 27 February 2014, 13:11

Bank of Valletta has supported the upgrading of the Multi Sensory Dark Room at Inspire’s Therapeutic Centre in Marsascala. Multi Sensory Theatres are specifically designed environments, which enable people with special needs to enjoy a broad range of sensory experiences for therapy, learning, relaxation and fun. The concept is to create events which focus on particular senses such as touch, vision, sound, smell, taste and movement. Nathan Farrugia, CEO at Inspire described the functions of the Multi Sensory Dark Room to Kenneth Micallef, Head CEO’s Office at Bank of Valletta during a visit to Inspire. “The dark room, as implied by the name, has black ceilings, walls and flooring. This enables images to be presented with maximum definition and with minimal distraction,” explained Inspire’s CEO. “This space is ideal for visual stimulation through the use of projections, ultraviolet lights and fibre optic sprays.” “In our everyday life, we are constantly bombarded with too much stimulation, which we learn to manage,” continued Mr. Farrugia. “On the other hand, a child suffering from autism encounters problems in managing these inputs. The use of specialist environments, such as a

dark room, make it possible for our practitioners to isolate and control the different sensory inputs that the child is subjected to.” “It is incredibly rewarding to witness the positive impact that these Multi Sensory Rooms have on children undergoing therapy,” commented Kenneth Micallef. “We are convinced that the Bank’s investment in this project will reap its benefits by widing the reach of the therapeuptic services provided by Inspire.”

Bank of Valletta supports Ghajnsielem’s Our Lady of Loreto restoration

Sunday, 02 March 2014, 18:00

Bank of Valletta is supporting the restoration process of a number of paintings at the old church in Ghajnsielem dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. The Titular painting by Zejtun-born Mikiel Busuttil is currently in an advanced state of restoration. The old parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto was built between 1810 and 1820. On 9 September 1820, Busuttil’s painting was brought by procession from Nadur and placed above the main altar of what was the parish church at the time. Almost two hundred years later, the painting was in dire need of restoration. The task of reversing the signs of the passage of time and conserving this masterpiece in the best possible state for future generations to enjoy was entrusted to Emanuel Zammit, once the support of Bank of Valletta was secured. Fr Frankie Bajada, Ghajnsielem parish priest and Kenneth Micallef, Head CEO’s Office at Bank of Valletta paid a visit to Mr Zammit’s workshop to see the progress of the restoration works.

CLIENT: MEDIUM: DATE:

BOV CSR INDEPENDENT.COM.MT 2 MARCH 2014

“It is fascinating to note that in all probability, some parts of Busuttil’s original painting were painted over by Giuseppe Cali. In fact, the style of the whole painting is closer to Cali’s, who also painted the other works of art that adorn the Church,” said the restorer. “Most of Our Lady’s dress had been painted over. We are currently going through the painstaking process of removing the top layer of paint to reveal the original painting underneath.” “The removal of the top layer of paint has also revealed the original artist’s signature and date,” continued Mr Zammit. “The painting is also being subjected to an extensive cleaning process to remove a number of layers of varnish that have deteriorated over the years and now are merely covering up the vibrant colours entrapped underneath them.” “Bank of Valletta’s commitment towards the national heritage has made the Bank’s name synonymous with several ambitious restoration projects over the past years. Every project involves years of challenging and meticulous work, but the feeling of satisfaction when another piece of the national patrimony is restored to its former glory makes it all worthwhile,” explained Mr Micallef. “Indeed, our collaboration with the Ghajnsielem parish church does not end with the titular painting but extends to a number of paintings by renowned artist Giuseppe Cali. To this date, this humble church attracts a continuous flow of devout pilgrims to its doors. We are really looking forward to increasing the appeal of this church once all paintings are restored and find their place back within the old church walls.”

Bank of Valletta supports Maltese Rock Opera ‘Gensna’

Sunday, 02 March 2014, 12:54

Fondazzjoni Ċelebrazzjoni Nazzjonali last week launched this year’s edition of the Maltese rock opera Ġensna, which will be held on 22 March at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali. Marc Muscat, head of FCN coordination team said that Ġensna is part of the Foundation’s artistic programme consisting of 63 concerts, spectacles, seminars, installations of all sorts and other artistic and cultural expression. Mr Muscat described Ġensna as “a timeless Maltese musical masterpiece”, which was written at a particular time in our history. Before the concert there will be the screening of the video about all four national anniversaries and the men who made them a reality. BOV chairman John Cassar White said that the bank takes pride in sponsoring artistic events which help to safeguard Maltese heritage for future generations, and for serving as a platform for new performers to reinterpret this work. Maestro Paul Abela, Ġensna’s composer, said that when he wrote the rock opera he never thought that he would be here launching it again 35 years later. He added that the approach

BOV CSR INDEPENDENT.COM.MT 2 MARCH 2014

towards this edition was completely different from the past. Performed by today’s top singers and musicians who are involved in the creative process, new musical arrangements and visual graphics it will surely appeal to both the younger generation as well as Ġensna’s original fans. Paul Giordimaina, who was part of the original cast, said he is very excited to have Ġensna live on through a new generation of singers. Errol Sammut, Airport Impressions’ frontman thanked the production team for the opportunity to be part of this edition, adding that it is a great honour to sing a historic piece of Maltese music. Ivan Grech of Winter Moods remarked that as a boy he was one of the extras in the original production 35 years ago. He said that Ġensna was “one of the best pieces of Maltese music ever written”. He also assured the public that he and all the singers are looking forward to giving the songs their own interpretation. Singer Ira Losco said that music is a universal language and Ġensna, in addition, talks about unity. She added that she’s very honoured that once again she’s part of the production with her other musical friends. Producer David Borg explained that Ġensna is the only work that refers to three of the national anniversaries being celebrated this year. EU accession obviously was still far off in the future when it was written. Mr Borg said it was a pleasure for him to announce that 10% of the ticket proceeds will be going toward the Malta Community Chest Fund. When it was produced six years ago, Ġensna ran for 13 performances, attracting an audience of 18,000. It is hoped that the current production will have the same sort of success. With an amazing line-up of singers including Ira Losco, Ivan Grech (Winter Moods), Errol (Airport Impressions), Tribali, Animae Gospel Choir, Daniel Cauchi (Big Band Brothers) Mikaela Attard, Claudia Faniello, Roger Tirazona, Mark Tonna, Georgina and George Curmi (il-Puse), among others, the current production will have the same success.

Bank of Valletta supports local entomologyin its latest ESM Bulletin Posted By Gozo News On March 5, 2014 @ 9:43 am In Malta News | No Comments

The Entomological Society of Malta said that it is proud to present its latest ESM Bulletin, which this time is focused on the wonderful diversity of dragonflies and damselflies that enrich the Maltese countryside. This publication, which is unique in its kind gives a modern systematic account of some 40 insects that are native to these islands whilst exposing eight species that were never previously recorded in Maltese publications. The bulletin is beautifully illustrated throughout in full colour, featuring no less than 130 colour photographs and over 100 line drawings, mostly done by one of the authors, Mr. Godwin Degabrielle, to show the range of diversity, both morphological and behavioural, among all the species. Dr David Mifsud, President of the society and editor of the publication, presented a copy of the book to Kenneth B. Micallef, Head CEO Office at Bank of Valletta, in recognition of the Bank’s support. “Bank of Valletta takes a leading role in supporting the environment in the best possible manner” said Mr Micallef. “This means that the green stakeholder features prominently in every decision we take, even in managing our business on a day-to-day basis. In addition, Bank of Valletta plays an active role in supporting third parties like the Entomological Society of Malta that go to such extents to raise awareness and disseminate information about the rich biodiversity of our islands – a subject that many of us hardly ever think about,” he explained. Dr Mifsud added that the Entomological Society of Malta’s (ESM) primary goals are “the improvement and diffusion of the study of insects. This publication follows the same format as previous issues of the ESM bulletins. It describes the unique features of the different species of insects mentioned therein and which are found different habitat types in the Maltese Islands.” The ESM was officially established in 1998 as a non-profit, educational and scientific organisation.
