HTC Windows 8x joins the top league

The HTC Windows Phone 8x can compete head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3. The HTC Windows Phone 8x is one of a new breed of smartphones that sports the new Windows Phone 8 operating system by Microsoft. The model under review has a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.3-inch touchscreen with HD 720 resolution, 16 GB of built-in storage (goes up in other models), 4G communication, eight-megapixel main camera with 1080p video recording, Near Field Communication capability, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Beats audio, and microSIM. These specifications already indicate that this is some promising piece of hardware and it did not let us down. Though relatively large in the smartphone family, the handling is good and you can reach almost all corners of the screen with your thumb – if you have a large one. The screen is comparable to the Retina display of the Apple iPhone 5. This review will not fall into the trap of comparing this smartphone with the iPhone 5 or any other top-notch Android-based model, but here we have a winner. The HTC 8x is one of the top smartphones with the new Windows Phone 8 operating system and we are sure that serious users will find it hard to choose between this HTC, the iPhone and the best Android-based models around (some of them also from HTC). Microsoft’s strategy is to provide a seamless experience for desktop/laptop/smartphone/tablet Windows 8 users and this is what we felt with this phone and Windows Phone 8 on it. Being the most recent player in the market, the Windows Phone 8 app store does not provide as many apps as iTunes or Google Play, but many of the most popular apps are already available for Microsoft’s platform. Microsoft’s app store is also laid out in a similar fashion. Windows Phone 8 does the job on a smartphone just like the iOS and Android.

The HTC 8x has enough processing power to handle the operating system but beware that storage is not expandable as it does not have a micro SD slot. Though it has support for 4G communication we cannot use it in Malta because no operator has launched such a service yet. The same goes for NFC for we are yet to find widespread use of applications in Malta that need NFC. The cameras are quite good and it handles video well. Beats audio, is becoming quite standard on high-end smartphones, and does a good job on this HTC too. Battery life with the 1800 mAh is adequate, but you need to be careful and take the usual precautions with brightness, constant Wi-Fi connectivity, and such like. Our verdict? The HTC Windows Phone 8x can compete head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S3. • The HTC Windows Phone 8x was made available for review by Vodafone Malta.

20 sena mill-ewwel SMS 13:23 | 03.12.2012

Vodafone qed timmarka l-20 anniversarju mill-ewwel SMS li qatt intbgħatet minn Neil Papworth, Inġinier li kien jaħdem ma’ kumpanija tas-servizzi Anglo-Franċiża IT Sema. Din il-kumpanija appoġġat lil Vodafone fl-Ingilterra u lil Vodacom f’Johannesberg biex jintbgħatu l-ewwel SMS. Papworth bagħat lewwel SMS minn laboratorju permezz ta’ computer lil Richard Jarvis, Direttur ta’ Vodafone li uza mowbajl Orbitel 901. Neil Papworth kien qiegħed jipprova juri li messaġġi jistgħu jintbagħtu l-barra mill-ambjent tallaboratorju u jistgħu jaħdmu xorta waħda. Fit-3 ta’ Diċembru 1992, Papworth mar f’waħda mis-siti ta’ Vodafone f’Newbury fl-Ingilterra u minn hemhekk bgħat l-ewwel SMS lil Richard Jarvis. L-ewwel SMS li qatt intbagħat kellu l-messaġġ ‘Happy Christmas’. Wara ftit tal-ħin Papworth irċieva konferma li kollox ħadem sew u kif suppost. Oriġinarjament l-SMS kienu ppjanat biex jintużaw minn technicians biex jikkomunikaw u jagħmlu testijiet u kien hemm il-ħsieb ukoll li jintażaw minn assistenti biex jibgħatu messaġġi lill-bosses tagħhom. Oriġinarjament qatt ma kien hemm il-ħsieb li l-użu tal-SMS ikun mifrux kif inhu llum il-ġurnata. “Bla dubju ta’ xejn l-SMS kien żvilupp li ntlaqa’ b’entużjażmu kbir u sar fenomenu inkredibbli użat minn biljuni ta’ persuni madwar id-dinja li juzaw il-mowbajl," qal Sandro Pisani, Head of Marketing ta’ Vodafone Malta. "Kif iddikjarat minn Neil Papworth nnifsu, dan l-izvilupp tant sempliċi sar popolarissimu ma’ persuni ta’ kull eta aktar w aktar għaliex ma jirrikjedi l-ebda kapaċitajiet kbar. Pereżempju, f'Malta l-SMS baqgħu popolari ħafna.” Neil Papworth twieled f’Reading fl-Ingilterra. Hu studja x-xjenza tal-kompjuter u beda l- karriera tiegħu billi kien jipprogramma inżul ta’ ħelikopters qabel ma’ daħal fid-dinja tat-telekomunikazzjoni fl-età ta’ 21 sena. Ħadem bħala developer, designer u software architect ma’ Sema, sas-sena li għaddiet. Illum ilġurnata Papworth jiddisnja prodotti ta’ Subscriber Data Management għall-LTE u IMS ma’ Telekec.

Originally SMS messages were meant to be used between technicians to communicate and run tests and for executive assistants to send messages to their bosses. The original idea never envisaged the widespread usage of SMS messages that we have today. “SMS has without doubt been welcomed with great enthusiasm and has become an incredible phenomenon used by several billions of mobile users worldwide,” said Sandro Pisani, Head of Marketing at Vodafone Malta. “As stated by Neil Papworth himself, this simple feature has become so popular with people of all ages since it requires no particular expertise. In Malta SMS messages remain extremely popular.” Neil Papworth was born inReading,UK. He studied computer science and started his career programming helicopter landing aids before moving into telecommunications at the age of 21. He worked as a developer, designer and software architect with Sema, until last year. He now architects next-generation Subscriber Data Management products for LTE and IMS at Tekelec.

‘Petrol head’ Pierre is Lewis Hamilton winner

Pierre Farrugia, the lucky winner of the Lewis Hamilton Hot Lap competition organised by The Sunday Times in asth Vodafone. Photo: Jason Borg The lucky winner of the Lewis Hamilton Hot Lap competition thought his colleagues were playing a prank on him when he received a phone call to say he had won. Pierre Farrugia, 51, is a self-confessed ‘petrol head’ and he is delighted that he will be sitting beside Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes sports car next Sunday. The 2008 F1 world champion will drive Mr Farrugia on a ‘hot lap’ around the racing track, but the Arrow Pharmaceuticals employee refused to believe he had won when he first received a phone call from The Sunday Times last week. “My colleagues are also big racing fans and we race go-karts regularly. The youngsters can’t beat me so I thought this was their way of getting back at me,” laughed Mr Farrugia. Not only that, but two of his most competitive colleagues had been bragging to him that they had won VIP passes for the Vodafone Raise Your Game event, which will also see Mr Hamilton performing doughnut manoeuvres. “When I received the confirmation e-mail from The Sunday Times I printed it out and calmly told them they would have to raise their game,” Mr Farrugia chuckled. The Sunday Times Lewis Hamilton Hot Lap competition in association with Vodafone ran in this newspaper over four consecutive weeks. Entrants had to answer four questions and send all the answers together to The Sunday Times. When Mr Farrugia found out that the competition attracted huge interest, he was even more pleased. “This is a dream come true for me,” he said.

Go awaits ‘clarity’ on Forthnet rights issue after Wind Hellas offer Telecoms group Go plc is still waiting for “clarity” and further developments before it takes decisions on its stake in Greek group Forthnet which is talking to a rival over a sale of parts of its business, a spokesman for the company said yesterday. A month ago, Greek telecoms group Wind Hellas submitted an offer for the fixed line and broadband business of its competitor Forthnet; the companies had been reported to be in talks for months. If the sale is sealed, Wind Hellas would become Greece’s second largest fixed-line and internet services provider. Wind Hellas’ bid does not include Forthnet’s pay TV network Nova. But in Malta, Go plc is still waiting for the prospectus relating to Forthnet’s planned €30 million rights issue – the publication of which has been expected since Forthnet shareholders approved the issue in August – before it takes a decision on whether to participate. Forgendo, a joint venture between Go and its parent Emirates International Communications, is Forthnet’s largest shareholder. “We do not know how a sale to Wind Hellas would affect Forthnet’s rights issue,” a spokesman for Go told The Times Business yesterday. “As soon as there is clarity on the situation, Go will assess its position. We are waiting for the prospectus to be published.” “A company which is willing to buy Forthnet’s fixed line and broadband portfolio is throwing Forthnet a lifeline, as it would bring badly needed revenue,” sources said yesterday. “Greece is what it is. Go’s shareholders think it is madness to pour more money into Greece and management time should be dedicated to Malta and Go’s business.” Go, which has around 8,000 shareholders, has been negatively impacted by its holding in Forthnet in recent years, with impairments denting the healthy operating profits of its local quad-play business. Its ill-fated investment in Greece has been largely written off.

10,000 free internet upgrades from Melita Wednesday, 28 November 2012, 13:13

Over the past few weeks, Melita has rolled out a free internet upgrade to around 10,000 clients who are already subscribed to its Fibre Power packages. Customers on Fibre Power 25 Megabits or Fibre Power 50 Megabits received a free 5 Megabit and 10 Megabit upgrade respectively. The upgrade comes with no strings attached, no new commitments, conditions or additional charges and will last for the remaining duration of existing contracts. Terms and conditions will remain unchanged for the duration of the contract period. This free upgrade will therefore enhance internet speeds from 25 to 30 Megabits per second and from 50 to 60 Megabits per second. “Up until about a year ago, the most common internet connection in Malta reached speeds of up to 5 Megabits per second. Today, our minimum entry level bundled speed is 30 Megabits per second. We wanted to thank our Fibre Power customers for their loyalty and why not, this is our Christmas present to 10,000 customers. Our customers will continue to enjoy an internet experience far better than most other European citizens”, commented Ludolf Rasterhoff, Melita’s Chief Operating Officer. As part of its continuous investment programme, Melita is now connected to one of only six Tier 1 internet providers in the world - “Level 3” – through a direct link between Malta and Milan. Level 3 is a global provider and provides internet services to global tech giants such as Apple and Netflix. Residential customers are experiencing an improved service particularly when using applications like online multi-player games, video streaming and other applications that require quick or real-time response from different points around the world. Business customers will see improved latency and even lower packet loss results. Melita has been confirmed as Malta’s fastest and most reliable internet service provider over and over again by international independent site www.netindex.com. November results show that Melita’s average download speed is higher than 23 Megabits per second. Advertised speeds are delivered in more than 98% of the tests performed.
