PERFORMANCE NOTES C trumpet

*Remove the first slide for the entirety of the piece to create a hocketing effect between the passage of air through the slide and the bell. Arrows between valve positions indicate a prolonged fingering change, with the desired effect of accentuating shifts in the direction of the sound. This is particularly the case when playing split tones.

Bb bass clarinet & A clarinet Percussion

Where underblown multiphonics (u.b.) are indicated, finger the higher pitch. Where overblown multiphonic trills are indicated in the opening section, finger the lower pitch.

**The piece calls for granulated drumsticks, used to bow the edge of the almglocken. These are standard drumsticks that are well-worn and highly textured down their full length, or otherwise carved/dented to create an unevenly ridged surface that catches slightly on the edge of the almglocken. The resulting sound should resemble the irregular gargle of a stormwater drain. Indications of how the bongos and almglocken should be played from figure 45 should be interpreted as follows:

Contrabass

***Performance of this piece requires the player to prepare their bow with fishing wire and elastic bands wrapped irregularly around the length of the stick. This should produce an unevenly granulated col legno tratto. Natural and artificial multiphonics should be played lightly, to glassy (and simultaneously abrasive) effect. Obscure the fundamental as much as possible. Where called upon, strike the strings with a small rubber mallet, following indications of rhythmic density:
