INSPIRATION Barbra Ayako Guya is an African mother to three beautiful boys based in Nairobi, Kenya. As a quality analyst by day and an artist by life, she explores her creative heart and extends her passion for the arts to the people around her. Her interest in photography began on a journey to self-discovery, coming to understand how she could tell stories, including her own, through pictures.

CONCEPT
INSPIRATION With a passion for imagery, Kat Grudko started her photography career with fashion photography but has since photographed everything from events to weddings to food to product to lifestyle and stock. In pursuit of the woman’s power, she recently put a more intentional focus on Exotic Boudoir, her own boudoir photography company which allows women the freedom of the intimate visual expressions of themselves. Wielding such power to empower other women and with deep eyes to explore beyond the surface looks, Kat emerges as this year’s grant recipient for the Female Gaze theme.

INSPIRATION Nancy Afua Agyeman is a lover of adventure and tryer of new things. At 23 years, this young photographer living in Accra, Ghana delves into an exploration of nature, lifestyle and other types of photography. As a woman in photography, she tends to look at what most people ignore or never deem useful. The Female Gaze as a theme is relatable to Efua as her life is filled with extraordinary women who inspire her, in one way or another. The female gaze theme coincides with how best she wants to illustrate that inspiration.

CONCEPT
INSPIRATION Rading Nyamwaya captured Joyful Moments through various emotions and expressions that fundamentally show how people communicate their moods of joy on a daily basis. Rading is an artistic, fun-loving alien in love with fashion, and design. She finds beauty in being the self and expressing the self, all the while spreading raging happiness like a female toreador.

BAHIA: A GASTRONOMICAL LENS INTO AFRO-BRAZILIAN DIASPORA
CONCEPT
INSPIRATION In 2021, Ana Carolina Haddad, a 26-year-old Brazilian photojournalist living in São Paulo, won the PICHA Grant. Her concept for winning the grant was to explore her beliefs in the narratives that are intrinsic to photography and using her skills as a trained journalist to investigate the heritage ties between the Afro-descendants in Brazil and their cuisines. HOW DO WE HEAL?
CONCEPT
INSPIRATION Rita Harper documented how Black men and women choose to heal their inner trauma. From childhood to adolescence to adult years, we all carry a certain amount of emotional baggage from our past experiences. How we choose to heal, recognize, and deal with these emotions differs from person to person. She followed 3 people on their journey to mental and emotional wellness. 'When we address our triggers and unresolved issues we try to push away, we elevate to our best and healthiest selves. ' Rita Harper
