3 Common Golf Mistakes

II WITH BEN ROSSONG

Grip

Head Position

Backswing

Many amateur golfers start by picking up a golf club the same way they would pick up a baseball bat with all 10 fingers placed on the grip. While some players can make this technique work to a certain level the only PGA pro to ever use the “baseball grip” was Bob Estes. The two most common grip choices among professionals are The Overlap and The Interlock, these grips connect your hands together making them work as a single unit which allows more control over the club. While switching your grip may be a frustrating experience at first it is truly a necessity if you are looking to lower your scores. If you are struggling to make good contact with the ball, some time on the range and playing around with your grip can be the quick and easy fix.

One of the most common and frustrating things for beginner golfers is “topping” the ball or taking a divot that goes farther than the ball. The reason for this problem is almost always because of head movement, your arms will always follow where your head goes. When I know I need to hit a big shot my last swing thought before my backswing is to keep my head as still as possible which will result in good contact. Many teaching professionals will take a video of a swing and draw a box around the golfers head, they then look to see how much the head moves outside of that box during the swing. If you can imagine your head in this same scenario and focus on keeping it within the box it will help. This swing thought can be very useful for beginner golfers as eliminating mis-hits and shanks from your game will result in much lower scores.

The focus you put on taking the club back is just as important as the rest of the swing. Many beginner golfers think because they are athletic or successful at other sports they can come out and swing as hard as possible at the golf ball and hit it 300 yards like the pros. This results in them bringing the club back as fast as possible and swinging with a very fast tempo, while swing speed on the downswing can be important being smooth and slow on the backswing is just as big. A tip I’ve always kept in mind from Tiger Woods is to keep the club head “low and slow” on the takeaway, keeping it as close to the ground as you can very slowly. He also recommends trying to keep the “butt end” of the grip moving as far away from your body as you can, this results in a very long and slow swing plane on the backswing. The more length you can get in your swing the more distance you can generate off the tee. When watching the swings of some of the biggest hitters on the PGA tour it is evident that they focus more on slow tempo and keeping their swing smooth than the overall speed of the club.

Now more than ever younger golfers are enjoying the game.

As 18-25 years enter the game, they see the game very much as presenting a meaningful basket of benefits. They enjoy the challenges they need to overcome, see the game as fun,

GOLFERS AGE ESTIMATED POPULATION 18 - 25 YEARS OLD 912,000 26 - 35 YEARS OLD 1,254,000 46 - 59 YEARS OLD 1,368,000

exciting, great way to socialize and an easy sport to be involved with. More golfers between the ages of 46-59 are leaving the sport. The future of golf is now switching to market more of the younger generation. The only downside according to this demographic is the cost to play and the length of the game.

OUR LOOKS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD

What is your

favourite colour to sport these days? I always tend to be more attracted to items dark in colour but I’ve been trying to incorporate more greens and blues into my wardrobe. Adding that extra pop of colour, whether it be bright or soft - it can really be the icing on the cake. Mixing the right colour with your outfit can be the tricky part. You need your look to flow - to captivate. Throwing a neon pop of colour with an already bright outfit could be a big mistake - or the best decision ever, if you can rock it with confidence. Adding a little colour to polish your look can be as easy as throwing on a bright satchel or chic metallic blue pumps. Choose your colour and make it maj. #ownit xx

Faces health

sports Healthy Living This is the 10th edition of Faces Health! To celebrate, at the end of this column I will provide you with the secret to greater health and an awesome life! But first let’s talk about the importance of the month of May. School is over (for most of you), work is slowing down (for some of us), and the weather is finally starting to warm up nicely. I’m sure many of you are excited to hit the beach, walk the waterfront or just lounge on patios and decks all summer. May is normally when many of us start to work towards developing our summer body. Unfortunately, some people take it to the extreme, working out non-stop at the gym and/ or severely cutting back on how much they eat. Extreme measures may lead to extreme bodies, but it will also lead to extreme inconveniences (including those pesky health problems). In order to develop a healthy summer body you need to do two things: eat well and exercise. It’s that simple! You will never make any sustainable progress if you just do one or the other. You need to give both equal attention. Eating well doesn’t mean eating nothing (or for some, just eating protein). It means eating fresh, unprocessed and preferably local foods. It also means eating consistent meals and snacks, drinking plenty of water and managing portions. Exercise is also a critical element in the summer body equation. It doesn’t have to be ‘extreme’ exercise so much as it should be ‘focused’ exercise. Going to the gym and bench-pressing as much weight as you can will not result in a well-defined, strong summer body. Nor will performing one hundred reps of a single exercise. You can achieve

so much more by just focusing on technique and rhythm. Without spending an hour explaining how to do this, I recommend that you look into “Mindful Workouts” online to truly optimize your exercise. The combination of good eating and great exercise will not only give you the summer body you want but also the energy and vitality that makes the summer more enjoyable.

Well, we’ve arrived at the end of this month’s column and as I promised here is the secret to living a healthy and awesome life: Be selfish and spoil yourself…Not in a monetary way (money doesn’t always mean happiness), but rather in a wellness way. We tend to sacrifice our health and well-being to please others or to get ahead in life. This always backfires (and I mean always!). For once be a little selfish and give yourself the attention you deserve. Spoil yourself with a healthy, delicious meal. Go for a long walk to just relax. Play a sport that gives you joy. Do something for you, not just for other people.

shop

Have a great month of May! Come back in June for some tips on how to healthify your BBQ’s and summer parties!
