Media Kit For Rugby League Player Magazine 2011

DESIGN FOR GILBERT MAGAZINE GROUP RUGBYLEAGUEPLAYERMAGAZINE This is some of the spread that I designed for Rugby League Player Magazine’s Media Kit for the year 2011/2012. I followed the art director’s style guide, but added my own creative flair by using some graphic elements to the Media Kit.

Concept of Double Page Spread For April/May Issue of Rugby League Player Magazine

POWER STRIKE 6

WORDS BY WILL LUCKMAN

THE REGULAR

NRL footy season has 192 matches, a handful of preseason trails, a 9-game finals series, a back-ended international showcase, All-Stars, City v Country; you could almost be forgiven for thinking that’s enough football for one season. Well, almost... because nothing on the rugby league calendar compares to the blockbuster interstate showdown that is State of Origin. It’s an instinctive rivalry that has burned since the earliest days of footballing memory. The battle of the borders between two proud states hell bent on immortalising their legend in the annals of time. Each year we watch in awe as the brilliant playmakers, powerhouse forwards and lightning backs tear up the turf. But one of the game’s most decisive positions often fails to draw the spotlight - the strike

utility coming off the bench. These men are game-breaking specialists called upon when the fate of their team hangs in the balance. Whether they’re chasing a deficit or clutching a lead, they burst into the fray and lift their weary brethren to new heights of battle hardened passion and aggression. Last year, Kurt Gidley and Cooper Cronk were charged with such a task. The former is an experienced veteran watching over a bright but desperate young NSW side, while the latter bides his time on the bench of a hugely competitive QLD outfit - one of history’s all-time greatest. As that explosive time of year rolls around once more, these two champions of the game look set to unleash a whole new level of awesomeness guaranteed to amaze, and RLP will be waiting.

DESIGN FOR GILBERT MAGAZINE GROUP RUGBYLEAGUEPLAYERMAGAZINE This is a concept spread for Rugby League Player Magazine’s opening feature for the month April / May. The photos was taken from Getty Images. The eight photos were put together using layering and blending techniques on Photoshop. The editor wanted to feature two players in a face-off. With a little inspiration from Lord of the Rings, I decided to produce ONE picture with the theme of Good versus Evil.

DESIGN FOR FLEXE DESIGN BIKRAM YOGA PENINSULA These are some of the design work that I produced during my time at Flexe Design. From the top is the billboard, followed by the alco panel on the bottom left, and the A-Frame on the bottom right. The girl was cropped in Photoshop and put together in Illustrator. I prefer to use Illustrator for this sort of designs because it is easier to control the layout of the graphics with the text. Moreover, I think it’s more about the big picture than the parts of the whole that I need to put together! 11

DESIGNFOR FRESHLY SQUEEZED CREATIVES

COPYWRITER AND CREATIVE WRITING These is the concept for a copywriting company. The copywriter wanted to have a flavour of play and literal funk with a concept called ‘Writing Warrior’ on his business card. The citrus colour was chosen to represent the name of the company. I came up with 2 design options. The top one with the custom die-cut stands out from the normal square-cut business cards.

DESIGN FOR REX WINES LIMITED

BIO-ORGANICWINES

HONGKONG Rex Wines Limited wanted a simple, drawn logo that speaks to their clients in the most informal way about their bio-organic wines. So, with a sketch of a bottle of wine, and some green to represent a fresh, organic feel to the logo, this is the result of the company’s business card, information card for the bottles, and the large convention banners.

DESIGNFOR

TAMASHII

COSPLAY COSTUME SPECILIST Tamashii is a company that produce tailor-made Cosplay costumes. I came up with the concept of anime characters as a silhouette for their flyers and banner. The idea behind this is to give the potential customers a feel of themselves in place of the silhouette, wearing their tailor-made costumes.

Billboard in Thailand.

DESIGN FOR PARKWAY CANCER CENTRE This is; in my opinion, a rather simple design for a billboard, as well as the first that went to print. It was also featured in other languages in other countries as shown on the image above. I wanted to keep it clean and consistent as the theme should be co-relate to the medical field.

DESIGNFOR

HUSS

HOME ANDFASHIONRETAIL Huss is a retail store in my neighbourhood. They sell gifts, home wares, clothing, accessories, as well as interior consultation. I didn’t design the logo, but I advised the owner to keep it as it is because the logo and the store is a familiar local establishment. I re-designed her business card to maintain the same consistency of her logo, in two different colours. The client likes the contrasting colours and decided to print both at the end of the project. 23

DESIGN FOR UNIVERSITY ASSIGNMENT

8PAGE DOUBLE SPREAD FOR UNIVERSITY DESIGN MAGAZINE

EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY The first project I did was an eight-page spreadsheet themed, “How I ended up as a designer”. This is where I was given a task to do a layout design with my own vector graphics and art with text layout. This is the finished product with ready-to-print pages.
