GEW 2016 In Review From November 14th – 20th, 2016, Trinidad and Tobago joined with some 160 countries to commemorate Global Entrepreneurship Week 2016. GEW is the world’s largest celebration of innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth, and expand human welfare.

During GEW, the entrepreneurial world joins hands to solidify the importance of entrepreneurial development towards the global landscape; thousands of events and competitions are organized worldwide to engage potential collaborators, mentors, entrepreneurs and even investors. Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago (YBTT) has been the T&T host for the past seven (7) years, and each year, the collaborative

focus is strengthened through continued efforts to sensitize all stakeholders on the various elements within the entrepreneurial eco-system, so that their navigation becomes easier. Given the current state of the Trinidad and Tobago economy, the focus of this year’s celebration was on diversification hence the theme “Diversification Through Entrepreneurship.” It is against this background, that four (4) champion events were hosted with the spotlight on the sectors identified for diversification – Agriculture, Creative Industries, Information and Communication Technology and a Youth Symposium (“From Idea To Business”). It should also be noted that due to the overwhelming support and interest from within various organizations and/or groups, GEW events started November 8th, 2016.

Media Launch This is usually the official start of Global Entrepreneurship Week and was held on October 25th, 2016 at TSTT’s Corporate Box, Queen’s Park Oval, Tragarete Road. Feature Speaker was UWI’s Senior Economist, Dr. Roger Hosein. In articulating the importance of entrepreneurship, particularly at this time, Dr. Hosein predicted that “T&T’s economic recession will continue until the third quarter of 2017;” he warned however that the strategy currently being used to lift the country out of the recession might not work because it was the same one used almost two (2) decades ago. Also addressing the audience was YBTT’s Chairman, Mrs. Dale Laughlin who issued a call to private sector businesses, government, international development agencies and foundations for financial support, skills and technical expertise.

Round Table Forum on Power 102FM – October 27th, 2016

A one-hour Round Table Forum themed “Entrepreneurship and GEW” was hosted on Power 102FM radio station. The session was aimed at identifying the opportunities and challenges that impact entrepreneurial development with some focus on Agriculture, Education, Tourism and Youth Entrepreneurship. Champion Events Technology Seminar – November 8th, 2016 TSTT’s Chief Technology Information Officer delivers the keynote address to the young audience.

A total of sixty-one (61) attendees including students from Naparima College, ASJA Boys, ASJA Girls and Holy Faith Convent (Penal) were part of the Technology Seminar powered by Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) held on November 8th, 2016 at the Auditorium, San Fernando City Corporation, Harris Promenade, San Fernando. General Manager, Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago, Shedron Collins welcomed the students and urged them to capitalize on the unique experience. Keynote speaker, Roger Richards, Chief Technology Information Officer, TSTT. Richards used his personal experience to emphasize that young people can start demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit at an early age. He added “you have to understand your

market and your audience.” Other speakers included Christian Benjamin, IT Director at Support 911 Limited who shared some useful insights on how cyberspace helps in achieving dreams and

Bringing a practical perspective to the event was Gerard Thomas, CEO, Launch Rockit with an entrepreneurial workshop that peaked their interest in obtaining realtime experiences on the importance of ICT to advancing entrepreneurial development globally.

Youth Agri-Symposium – November 10th, 2016 Secondary students got an opportunity to share their thoughts and suggestions on how Trinidad and Tobago would feed itself by 2020 at a Youth Agri-Symposium hosted jointly by the Agricultural Development Bank and Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago. Schools participating in this symposium included Fyzabad Secondary, Carapichaima East Secondary and ASJA Girls’ College (Barrackpore) and they each demonstrated their talent and acumen (61 students were in attendance). Keynote at this event was Sheivan Ramnath, Chief Executive Officer, Agricultural Development Bank who shared with the students the myriad of opportunities that exist within the agriculture sector and urged them to take advantage of same.

Motivating the youngsters were Frank Ali, President of the Bon Air Farmers’ Association and ASTT Director – AgriYouth Development and Michael Parris, Founder and Director, Soular, AgroProcessing local organic fruits, vegetable and cocoa. Bringing the event to a close was Gerard Thomas, CEO, Launch Rockit who showed the students the important link between agriculture technology and entrepreneurship.

Almost every youth under the age of eighteen (18) has a business idea but may be unsure how to further develop it. “From Idea To Business” offered an ideal forum for students to engage and exchange information and suggestions relating to various business ideas. Leading off the programme was Shedron Collins, YBTT’s General Manager who extended a warm welcome to the ninetyseven (97) students who were present. Also gracing the students with his presence was media personality, Sonny Bling (Kerron Sealy), who took the time to motivate the students “once you’re determined and committed, you can be the best that you can be” said Bling. Stephen Weeks, Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy was also on hand to address the students which was a welcoming gesture. Delivering the keynote was David Thomas, Owner and Managing Director of Market Movers Limited & Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award Winner 2016.

Creative Symposium – “Unlocking The Hidden Potential” – November 18th, 2016 The Creative Industries has been identified as one of the most potent sectors in T&T with the potential for diversification. On November 18th, 2016, three (3) practitioners representing Music, Film and Fashion and Craft came together to share their experiences which focused on the opportunities and challenges that exist.

Entrepreneurial Expo “From Here to Success” hosted by TRIDATA – November 5th, 2016

A total of forty-eight (48) entrepreneurs showcased their products and services at the expo themed “From Here to Success” held at Constantine Park, Macoya on November 5th, 2016. The event was aimed

Global Entrepreneurship Week Celebrations! GEW CELEBRATIONS AT ARTHUR LOK JACK GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS! The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business has been a consistent GEW Partner over the years. For GEW 2016, the institution hosted five (5) events all focusing on various elements of entrepreneurship. On November 14th, “Youth Entrepreneurs: Changing The Game of Business” was held and demonstrated the important role which youths play in entrepreneurial development….40 participants attended. “Marketing and E-Commerce for Small Businesses” was held on November 15th and attracted a total of 68 attendees. On November 16th, participants got a practical, yet unique opportunity in obtaining tips of advice on developing their business plans and

winning sales’ pitch…Theme of the event was “Open Market: Free Workshop on Crafting Your Business Plan & Sales Pitch.” “Driving Social Change Through Innovation” was yet another important event hosted on November 17th, to showcase the integration of social entrepreneurship into mainstream entrepreneurial development. Women brought the curtains down on November 18th with “WOMEN: Making The Cut in Business”, a platform that allowed successful female entrepreneurs to share their stories to motivate and support other females with similar entrepreneurial interests.

COSTAATT CELEBRATES GEW! Entrepreneurship is at the forefront of COSTAATT’s agenda, and so, the institution seeks out opportunities to showcase the entrepreneurial initiatives facilitated through its curriculum. GEW 2016 was a perfect example with the hosting of three (3) panel discussions which focused on various elements of entrepreneurship at its Port-of-Spain, Sangre Grande and South campuses. Over 116 persons comprising of young entrepreneurs and stakeholders participated in UTT’s Open Day hosted by the u-START Business Incubator on November 15th, 2016. Thirty (30) representatives from eleven (11) USTART companies participated in the event from areas of Fashion, Agro-Processing and Technology, and they also got the opportunity to learn about new and cuttingedge technology such as Virtual and Augmented Reality. All participants also took part in the Mannequin Challenge.

UTT’S MASTER CLASS – NOVEMBER 18TH, 2016 UTT’s entrepreneurial vision continues to expand as evident by the innovative initiatives that are usually facilitated by the institution. In keeping with this trend, a Master’s Class themed “Customer Service for Entrepreneurs” was facilitated by Lara Quentrall-Thomas, Founder and CEO, Regency Recruitment and YBTT Board Member. A total of twenty-four (24) specially selected entrepreneurs attended this very important seminar.

ENTREPRENEURIAL WORKSHOP – “INNOVATIVE SALES STRATEGIES TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS” HOSTED BY CONEC COACHING SERVICES Being equipped with effective sales strategies is an extremely important tenet of success in all aspects of the entrepreneurial landscape; it is against this background, that Jennifer Gibbons-Joseph, Principal Consultant, CONEC Coaching Services hosted a mini-workshop on November 17th, 2016 as part of CONEC’s commemoration of GEW 2016. DIGITAL EVENT – “BUILDING FEMALE LEGACIES” HOSTED BY ENTREPRENEUR LIFE TT ON NOVEMBER 17TH, 2016 On-line events also formed part of this year’s GEW celebrations. Themed “Building Female Legacies” and hosted by Entrepreneur Life TT, the event featured an esteemed panel of female entrepreneurs who shared their testimonials as well as provided tips of advice to other women possessing entrepreneurial desires. The event produced a total of 167 respondents.

Start-Up Weekend hosted by Launch Rockit Starting a business is at the front burner for many, but in most instances, much-needed resources are not easily forthcoming. StartUp Weekend is now considered a daily staple of Global Entrepreneurship Week for the past three (3) years.
