BACK IN THE DAY After the building was

T

he picture you see was taken on a Wednesday not too long ago. The picture in and of itself is of no great consequence. However, I think the building is a shining example of positive thinking. The. Way I see it, the building was constructed sometimes in the 1920s or 1930s at the latest. Somebody had the vision to plan to erect what was probably a good place to get gas and probably a quick meal. The location is on Highway 80 between Grand Saline and Mineola. As I’ve pointed out before Highway 80 was this country’s first coast to coast highway. Somewhere along the way an enterprising fellow got the idea that would be a great spot for a business. So, he had plans drawn up and spent money on wood, bricks and all things needed for such a grand building.

completed, then came stocking the shelves with things that are necessary to run that kind of business. After it opened, in my mind I envisioned a lot of local farmer types having coffee or sodas and maybe reading an area newspaper. I’ll even bet Bonnie and Clyde might have stopped there a time or two. Let’s not forget there was no interstate highway. Interstates started building in 1950 and didn’t become popular until the late 1960s. My guess is the building had to be constructed in the 1920s. By the time the depression came and went, the business went through some storms but still survived fairly solvent. When the big one , World War two hit it slowed down our business. remember gas was rationed as well as many

other items were hard to get. After that war ended the soldiers known as baby boomers headed home to live the good life of the 1950s in the good old USA. So, what finally did the little business in? During World War Two President Eisenhower then General Eisenhower saw the German Autobahn and it inspired him to create today’s highly developed highways we call the interstate system. Travel on highway 80 probably dwindled to where it just wasn’t feasible to keep the doors open any longer. Nearly fifty to 60 years of history involved. And only one thing did her in, progress. I wish the walls could talk oh the tall tails I bet it could tell. Thank you for reading the LONE STAR SHOPPER

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS

Dear Dave, We live in Colorado, and we need some advice on protecting our assets. My wife is a teacher, and I’m a nurse. We make around $180,000 a year combined, and we’re set to pay off our home next month. We also have two teenagers who are both driving, so we were wondering about the best way to protect everything if one of them has an accident and we get sued, or something else tragic happens. Spencer Dear Spencer, With your income, and the stage you’re in when

it comes to wealth building, I think it’s time to add an umbrella policy. This is a liability policy, and you could probably buy an extra million in liability coverage for around $250 a year. It attaches to the liability policy that’s already part of your homeowners and car insurance. With a couple of teenage drivers in the house it might run a little more than $250, but I wouldn’t think it would be much more, if any. It would just add an extra million to the mix, just in case someone decided they were going to come after

www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002

you because of a bad situation. As you continue building wealth later, like if you get into real estate and start buying rental properties, make sure you put those in a limited liability company (LLC). You’re not there quite yet, but it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and do whatever you can to keep the size of the target on your back relatively small. —Dave

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS

Dear Dave, I have a pension plan that will pay me 80 percent of my top three

highest years’ income. Should I continue to invest 15 percent towards retirement? I will top out at $79,000 yearly, and I plan on retiring in 28 years. Jordan Dear Jordan, You should always put 15 percent of your income into retirement once you reach Baby Step 4. I would never count on a pension as my only retirement income, because the truth is many pension funds are very poorly managed. You’ll probably get the pension when the time comes. I’m not predicting it will go broke or anything like that, but there’s no way I would leave the financial state of my retirement in other people’s hands. That’s exactly what you’re doing when your plan is to count on a pension or Social Security. With Roth IRAs, 401(k)s and so forth, you’re building wealth that you control. You have to control the controllable, Jordan. There are plenty of things in our lives we have no control over whatsoever, but you have to take

charge of the stuff you can control in order to win. Building wealth is one of those things! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. 4 Ways to Use Your Tax Refund to Get Ahead By Chris Hogan

D

id you know that March is Asset Management Awareness Month? Let me put that for you in plain English: Asset is a fancy word for your stuff, and management means taking control of your stuff. Here’s a practical opportunity to try asset management: What should you do with your tax refund this year? Let’s look at four ways to make the most of it. Adjust your withholdings Sure, it’s fun to get a big chunk of change all at once, but tax refunds don’t come from Santa Claus! A refund means that you’ve been overpaying the government all year. If you’re getting a big tax refund, I want you to adjust your withholdings in the coming year. You could have been using that money, saving it on your own, or investing it all year long! Talk with a tax advisor about how you can have a bigger paycheck and stop giving the government an interest-free loan. Pay off debt Debt is a thief.
