Jenkins Franklin made the following statement earlier Wednesday on his social media post. “I have just shaken hands with Sheriff Traylor and congratulated him on a hard fought race and his re-election to another term as Rains County Sheriff. He received 53.94% of the votes, while I received

46.06%. I cannot thank you all enough for the encouragement, support, texts, phone calls and messages. Even though we lost the election, I truly believe we have done a lot of good for Rains County by fighting this fight and staying the course.” Meanwhile in Van Zandt County incumbent Dale Corbett 1,907 or 44.9 percent of the vote, Steve Hendrix garnered 1,373 or 32.3 percent of the vote. won every county Tuesday Flynn did not break 50% which means that he is going to a runoff. Runoff races are as follows; Here are some dates pertaining to upcoming run off electionsApril 27: This is the last day to register to vote and be eligible to cast a ballot in the primary runoffs. Runoffs happen whenever a single candidate doesn’t cross the 50% threshold in the March primary. Almost certainly, there will be races that head to a runoff. May 15: This is your last day to request a ballot to vote by mail for the primary runoff. In order to vote by mail, you have to meet certain conditions. Learn more here. May 18: Early voting in the primary runoff begins. Keep in mind that voters can only participate in one party’s primary each year. If you voted in the Democratic primary in March, for example, you can’t vote in the Republican primary runoff in May.

May 22: Early voting in the primary runoff ends. May 26: This is primary runoff election day, your last chance to have a say in whom the Republicans or Democrats nominate in any races that went to a runoff. Make sure to show up at your local precinct, unless your county is participating in countywide voting. You can find this out by checking your county’s website. In other election news. July 13-16: Delegates will convene at the Democratic National Convention to officially select and nominate their presidential ticket. Normally, a single candidate breaks from the pack and effectively clenches the nomination before the actual convention. But it is possible that no one wins a majority of delegates in the primaries. At this point, the party will have a contested convention on its hands. Aug. 24-27: Just like the Democratic Party did last month, the Republican Party will convene to officially select its ticket. Barring any developments, President Donald Trump is expected to lead the ticket on the Republican side of the ballot. Oct. 5: This is your last day to register to vote for the general election. Check out this page for more information about voter registration in Texas. Oct. 19: Early voting starts in Texas. You can check your county’s website for information about polling locations. Oct. 23: This is your last day to request a ballot to vote by mail for the primary. In order to vote by mail, you have to meet certain conditions. Learn more here. Oct. 30: Early voting ends. Nov. 3: If you didn’t vote early, you get your chance on Election Day. Make sure to show up at your local precinct, unless your county is participating in countywide voting. Again, you can find this out by checking your county’s web site.

Save Time with Easy Meal Hacks I FAMILY FEATURES

f it feels as though your life is too busy, you’re not alone. Many families experience the feeling of constant busyness, but there are ways to save time around the house and lift some of those burdens. In fact, one of the easiest places you can add extra minutes to your day is in the kitchen. Common meal preparation tasks like chopping vegetables, collecting spices, measuring ingredients and heating the oven can eat into time you could be spending with loved ones. Add in trying to follow a recipe on your phone or tablet with dirty hands or trying a new dish that doesn’t work out as planned means putting dinner on the table can waste quality time. Innovation and technology can make meal prep easier, and kitchen hacks like turning to ready-to-heat meals that take just minutes can enhance your productivity. Consider these simple ways to rethink your dinner routine in an effort to create more moments with loved ones: n

Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

n

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

n

n

Meal kits certainly save time in the store, but be careful to avoid options that still include a lot of prep and cleanup. Focus on frozen kits that contain pre-chopped and measured ingredients that are ready to go. Stock your pantry with the basics to make cooking quicker and easier. From condiments and canned goods to seasonings and spices, keeping the essentials on-hand means less time scrambling for a quick run to the store and more moments spent at home.

n

For one of the ultimate ways to trim kitchen time and cleanup, try a one-pan meal solution like Aqua Star Smart Seafood Sautés. Available in seven flavors ranging from Kung Pao Shrimp to Spanish-Inspired Seafood Paella, the meals are ready to eat in just 10 minutes, meaning more time to make dinner a fun event with additional moments shared at the table.

Feeling constantly busy can create a drag on dinner, but preparing in advance and finding ways to save precious minutes for family moments can turn mealtime back into a shared event. Find more time-saving solutions at aquastar.com.

TAKE TIME TO HEAL AND LEARN

Dear Dave, I went through a divorce a couple of months ago, and I’m not sure what to do next. I received custody of our kids, ages 13 and 15, plus I have a good job and I got the house in the settlement. It’s a nice, simple home, but it’s paid for and worth about $200,000. I receive $1,400 a month in child support, and I got $125,000, which was half our savings. I also have no other debt. Most of my friends are

telling me I should begin investing, but they all have different ideas about where I should put the money. Can you give me some guidance? Michelle Dear Michelle, I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. Divorce is hard enough when it’s just a couple, but it must be incredibly difficult with kids involved. Make sure you spend lots of time hugging on them, and telling them how

www.lsshopper.com • 903-865-7002

much you love them. God bless you guys. Ok, I know your friends are just trying to help, but I wouldn’t follow their financial advice right now. The trauma from your divorce is still fresh, and you should never make important, long-range decisions when your emotions are messed up. If there’s anything positive in all this, it’s that you’re in a really nice place where your finances are concerned. You’ve got a good job, you have no debt, and you’ve got six figures sitting in the bank.

My advice is to park that money in a CD until you feel you’re getting over the shock of what has happened. You won’t make much money doing this, but you won’t lose any, either. Then, after some time has passed, I want you to find a good financial advisor—one with the heart of a teacher—and look into investing $25,000 in good growth stock mutual funds. I’m talking about ones with at least a 10-year track record of success. Time and knowledge can help erase fear, Michelle. Plus, you’ve got a responsibility to yourself and your kids to invest wisely. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. 4 Ways to Use Your Tax Refund to Get Ahead By Chris Hogan

D

id you know that March is Asset Management Awareness Month? Let me put that for you in plain English: Asset is a fancy word for your stuff, and management means taking control of your stuff. Here’s a practical opportunity to try asset management: What should you do with your tax refund this year? Let’s look at four ways to make the most of it. Adjust your withholdings Sure, it’s fun to get a big chunk of change all at once, but tax refunds don’t come from Santa Claus! A refund means that you’ve been overpaying the government all year. If you’re getting a big tax refund, I want you to adjust your withholdings in the coming year. You could have been using that money, saving it on your own, or investing it all year long! Talk with a tax advisor about how you can have a bigger paycheck and stop giving the government an interest-free loan. Pay off debt Debt is a thief.
