Back To School

Well it’s that time again. Time for back to school for the kiddos. Time to pick up paper, pens, glue, clothes and bullet proof backpacks. When I was in grade school, we looked foward to back to school and I remember what I wanted was a Lone Ranger lunch box. Unfortunatly that didn’t happen, so it was the brown bag express

for me. When I went to school, we got out Memorial Day and we didn’t go back till the day after Labor Day. Of course, the reason it was set up that way was because of family farms needing the child labor. Now that family farms are in decline child labor is not needed. But I digress , lets get back to the issue at hand school sup-

plies. First of all don’t send kids to school in two hundred dollar tennis shoes and no school supplies. That makes me crazy. I remember when school was considered a safe haven. Recently, I was listenening to Rick Roberts on WBAP. Mr. Roberts interviewed the inventor of Tuffy Packs. What are Tuffy Packs and what are they used for? According to their web site, TuffyPacks • 1-855-320-7467 (SHOP) manufactures global defensive solutions to the ever increasing problem of active shooter incidents that are occurring at an alarming rate in our schools . Think about this,we are now equipping our precious children with bullet proof back packs. What have we as a society become? It’s no wonder parents who home school are becoming the norm. I have a litany of things public schools make me hot under the collar about. First of all teachers are underpaid . Administrators overpaid. We no longer teach useful things like morals, manners, civility, and other useful things. We don’t have financial literacy classes. Heck, I dont think we even have

Page 5

homemaking anymore. You know our forefathers had it right. Teach reading, writing and arithmetic and don’t neglect cursive while you’re at it and maybe the rest will take care of itself. Instead, schools unfortunately have become armed indoctrination compounds. I feel sorry for my grandchildren. No recess, very little creative time. It’s time we as parents got involved in our schools. We pay taxes, so visit school board meetings. Visit your childs teachers and get to know your child’s principal. You can and should make a difference. Thanks for reading the Lone Star Shopper and as always, I’M PULLIN’ FOR YA!

A BurdenilyTo Help is barely getting by,

Dear Dave, Do you believe the adult child of a senior citizen, who is physically and mentally healthy but has neglected to plan for retirement, should be burdened with providing financial assistance to that parent? Robbie Dear Robbie, Based on the wording in your question, I can only believe you don’t think the adult child should be “burdened” to provide this assistance. My guess is you’re talking about one of your own parents. I understand that you might be aggravated with a parent who has been irresponsible with their money. But in my mind, there’s a bigger question. How big is the burden? I talked to a guy recently who was making $1.5 million a year. He was questioning whether he should help his dad — an older man in poor health, who didn’t handle his money well — by giving him $1,000 a month. There’s no question you give that guy money. You’re making millions, but you don’t want to help your sick dad? Come on! But if you bring home $2,000 a month, and your fam-

you’re not morally required to financially take care of a parent who was irresponsible with their money. It’s all relative. Do you have the money? Can you provide this help without placing an undue burden on yourself and your family? If the answer is yes, you may be asking more about your own aggravation than any sort of moral obligation. But no, you’re not morally obligated to destroy your own life, or your family, to take care of a relative who didn’t take care of themselves financially. —Dave

Seperate Emergency Fund

Dear Dave, I’ve going to be debtfree with a full emergency fund in pace by the end of the year. I’m going to get a dog after that, but I wanted to make sure I did it the right way and was in good financial shape before making that move. Is a separate emergency fund for pets a good idea? Scott Dear Scott, My wife and I love animals. We’ve had a least one dog the whole time

we’ve been married. Still, I think a full emergency fund of three to six months of expenses will cover you and your pet. You go through some expense as a pet owner, along with happy, wonderful times and heartbreaking things, too. We lost our golden retriever recently, and I can tell you that was really hard on everyone. You love them like they’re family, but you still have to use common sense sometimes, and remember that they’re animals and not human beings. Part of that includes spending reasonable amounts of money on them — and in some unfortunate cases — doing things with the animal’s best interest, not our own desires, in mind. What is a reasonable amount? That depends on how stable you are financially. It’s really a ratio question of expense to means. But no, I wouldn’t recommend a second emergency fund just for pets. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. You're not here by accident. God loves you. He wants you to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus, His Son. There is just one thing that separates you from God. That one thing is sin. The Bible describes sin in many ways. Most simply, sin is our failure to measure up to God’s holiness and His righteous standards. We sin by things we do, choices we make, attitudes we show, and thoughts we entertain. We also sin when we fail to do right things. The Bible affirms our own experience – “there is none righteous, not even one.” No matter how good we try to be, none of us does right things all the time. People tend to divide themselves into groups - good people and bad people. But God says that every person who has ever lived is a sinner, and that any sin separates us from God. No matter how we might classify ourselves, this includes you and me. We are all sinners. "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 Many people are confused about the way to God. Some think they will be punished or rewarded according to how good they are. Some think they should make things right in their lives before they try to come to God. Others find it hard to understand how Jesus could love them when other people don't seem to. But I have great news for you! God DOES love you! More than you can ever imagine! And there's nothing you can do to make Him stop! Yes, our sins demand punishment - the punishment of death and separation from God. But, because of His great love, God sent His only Son Jesus to die for our sins. "God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 For you to come to God you have to get rid of your sin problem. But, in our own strength, not one of us can do this! You can't make yourself right with God by being a better person. Only God can rescue us from our sins. He is willing to do

this not because of anything you can offer Him, but JUST BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU! "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy." Titus 3:5 It's God's grace that allows you to come to Him - not your efforts to "clean up your life" or work your way to Heaven. You can't earn it. It's a free gift. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8-9 For you to come to God, the penalty for your sin must be paid. God's gift to you is His son, Jesus, who paid the debt for you when He died on the Cross. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23 Jesus paid the price for your sin and mine by giving His life on a cross at a place called Calvary, just outside of the city walls of Jerusalem in ancient Israel. God brought Jesus back from the dead. He provided the way for you to have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus. When we realize how deeply our sin grieves the heart of God and how desperately we need a Savior, we are ready to receive God's offer of salvation. To admit we are sinners means turning away from our sin and selfishness and turning to follow Jesus. The Bible word for this is "repentance" - to change our thinking about how grievous sin is, so our thinking is in line with God's. All that's left for you to do is to accept the gift that Jesus is holding out for you right now. "If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Romans 10:9-10 God says that if you believe in His son, Jesus, you can live

forever with Him in glory. "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16 Are you ready to accept the gift of eternal life that Jesus is offering you right now? Let's review what this commitment involves: I acknowledge I am a sinner in need of a Savior - this is to repent or turn away from sin I believe in my heart that God raised Jesus from the dead this is to trust that Jesus paid the full penalty for my sins

I confess Jesus as my Lord and my God - this is to surrender control of my life to Jesus I receive Jesus as my Savior forever - this is to accept that God has done for me and in me what He promised If it is your sincere desire to receive Jesus into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior, then talk to God from your heart: Here's a Suggested Prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I do not deserve eternal life. But, I believe You died and rose from the grave to make me a new creation and to prepare me to dwell in your presence forever. Jesus, come into my life, take control of my life, forgive my sins and save me. I am now placing my trust in You alone for my salvation and I accept your free gift of eternal life." Discipline in the home: Establishing limits

The education and discipline you give your children will stay w i t h them for the rest of their lives and will help t h e m become responsible, well-balanced adults. T h e question is, how can parents effectively enforce these notions? Discipline consists of creating necessary and realistic rules and limits that aim to protect children and help them develop self-control and respect for others. Discipline is important

as it teaches children to distinguish between right and wrong, gives them a feeling of being taken care of and loved and it builds self-confidence, which in turn encourages them to try new experiences. Try not to establish too many rules and ensure that the ones you do are adapted to the age of the children. Ask everyone who is involved in their care to impose the same rules. Never be too severe • 1-855-320-7467 (SHOP)

with children, especially if they’ve had a difficult day, but try to remain constant; children won’t understand if you allow them one thing one day and forbid it the next. State clearly what you expect of them. Explain the reasons for your intervention without debating the question or arguing. Tell children what they have done wrong and ask them to think about it. Be patient — making mistakes is a child’s way of learning. Congratulate them when they behave well. You should never hit or spank children. If they refuse to listen, establish a reasonable consequence and stick to it. Children’s behaviour can only improve with even-handed discipline!

Don’t Let Your Summer Bite (NAPSA)—Here’s good news for homeowners tired of being bugged: There are steps you can take to reduce the number of mosquitoes in your neck of the woods.

Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to colognes, fragrances, strong soaps and dark or bright colors. • Still water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Experts advise homeowners to not leave standing water in their yards, drainage ditches or plugged roof gutters. In addition, it’s a good idea to change water in birdbaths, potted plants and wading pools at least once a week. • To keep persistent outdoor pests outdoors, cover all windows, doors, chimneys and other entrances with insect screens. • If bitten by a mosquito, try not to scratch the bite—experts say it will only cause it to itch more and may lead to infections. Try using an itch-relieving product instead. For example, ITCH-X is an anti-itch gel that contains aloe vera. It soothes itching caused by bug bites, poison ivy, oak and sumac. • Mosquitoes are attracted to bright, dark colors, especially red. To keep mosquitoes at bay, it can be helpful to wear light, solid colors and avoid floral prints or any type of fur on clothing. For more information, visit
