Objective: Identify a gap in the eye-wear market Design an innovative pair of glasses Build a pair using rapid prototyping

Blade Details: Redesign polycarbonate safety glasses Adhere to ANSI standards Focus on outdoor use Keep production costs low

The Context OSHA requires employers to identify workplace eye hazards

OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration ANSI - American National Standards Institute

Employers must provide appropriate eye safety wear

ANSI sets the design standards and requirements

Refined Design Brief:

Safety glasses are disposable - Eliminate waste Consider changing light conditions - from very bright to dark Ear plugs are another OSHA requirement - keep that in mind Contractors buy glasses in bulk boxes - think economies of scale

Result: Employers buy cheap glasses (Common issues)

(Typical contractor glasses)

Flimsy arms and hinges

Bulky glasses get heavy

Shaded lens options are limited

Polycarbonate scratches

Outdoor work = changing light

Labor is often noisy

Refined Design Brief:

20.5 million people in U.S. have been diagnosed with arthritis

Identify an issue people aged 65 and older, who suffer from limited fine motor control, have in their daily lives. Cater to issues caused specifically by Osteoarthritis; reduced grip, dexterity and range of motion. Focus on products in the home, garden, car, personal electronics, or sports gear.

Arthritis, or more specifically Osteoarthritis, often affects all the small joints of the hand.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is a disease identified by the degradation of cartilage in joints. This results in painful, often stiff and inflamed joints.

The iconic peeler with large grip

Design that is universal

Empathy Experience

Gloves were a poor simulation Tape was the real breakthrough

Understanding the problem at hand

Findings:

How can you simulate arthritis?

Typing

•Significantly reduced grip •Wrist strain •Increased time to do things •Accuracy of hand movements decreased •Almost every movement is difficult •Dexterity is key •Small things require much more effort •The thumb makes a huge difference

Split-Case

ABS exterior - crush proof, durable plastic Magnetic latch - keeps case securely closed One handed operation is possible Textured plastic for easy identification by touch Felt lined interior Slim profile

The oversized opening is finger friendly. This case requires significantly less dexterity to retrieve your glasses.
