JASON, PHOTOGRAPHER AND STEREO COLLECTOR

I’d say that there is definitely a difference between being a collector and being a dealer. My stereo collection was getting so big that I had to start selling some of it in order to buy more. Alot of the dealers that rent spaces near me find it alot harder to sell their collections and seem to just buy more and more. Most of the collectors I know are really just hoarders in denial. Before I got into collecting I was working as a photographer in London.

The photography business was very competetive and so eventually I stopped being a professional photographer and moved to Norwich. I’d always been interested in vintage clothes, vinyls ect but I guess I found it abit of release and something to keep me busy as I had alot more time on my hands. I’ve been buying and selling vintage steroes for about four years.

MICHAEL PORTER, MODEL TRAIN COLLECTOR ‘‘I guess i’ve collected trains my entire life, but it wasn’t until I was older that I became obsessed with constructing the perfect model. A model railway is never finished...’’

I’ve always been fasinated by trains since I was a young boy but as I got older I started to focus more on the construction of the railways themselves. Once i’d started collecting properly I also moved onto collecting cars, buses, soldiers and war planes. I think my wife gets abit fed up with it all scattered around the house, luckily shes let me use the spare room to set it all up.

Because i’ve got abit more space now i’m hoping to extend the track and i’ll probably buy a few new bits aswell. My friend John also has his own models and pops round on the weekends for a cup of tea and to compare trains ect. I must admit it does often get abit competetive! I don’t plan on selling any of my collection but im hoping one day one of my grandchildren might be interested.

I wouldn’t say that I have a favourite piece but I suppose that the older parts of the collection are closer to me as they hold alot of childhood memories. I have been building up this collection for basically all of my life! I recently joined the Model Train Society which is brilliant because I get to show off my trains! I must admit the people that go there are alot older, you don’t see many younsters interested in collecting these days. I’m not sure why this is but my guess is that all this new technology has something to do with it.

Now that I am older I suppose the collecting is something to keep me occupied, it’s definitely given me abit more of a social life and it’s been nice to meet other people with the same interests as me. I really enjoy it and still get excited when I get a new piece of track or a new model. I wouldn’t like to say how much my collection is worth, infact im not actually too sure myself! I don’t do it for the money though, it is purely for my own entertainment. I’ll never sell any of my models.

GERALDINE, DOG GROOMER AND POODLE COLLECTOR ‘‘I take an ornament out of the cabinet each month and put it on top of the t.v so that they all get a chance to have some attention!’’

I’ve loved animals my whole life and when I was just 17 I was lucky enough to get the oppotunity to help out at a grooming salon that Joan, a family friend of my parents had in Ireland. As a child i’d had alot of pets but hadn’t actually seen a poodle.

It was alot harder than i’d thought, there were hundreds of different hairstyles and they were hard to maintain. As II got older I started to get more interested in the shows and started getting involved with crufts. Alot of the items I have are infact

gifts from previous clients. I have loads of paintings and models. I guess I see the earlier parts of my collection as memories, as it wasn’t until abit later that I actually started collecting properly.

When Joan sadly passed away she left me her porcelean poodle collection and this is what made me start officially collecting. I look in antique shops and have more recently started using ebay. People always give me poodle related gifts which is why I have loads of the same bits. I just can’t bring myself to throw them away! Because my collection is getting so big it means that not all of my models can be seen so to stop them from getting lonely I take an ornament out of the cabinet each month and put it on top of the t.v so they all get a chance to have some attention! Inorder to make more room for the Poodles I have got rid of everything that isn’t poodle related, I think my family think i’ve gont abit mad!

‘‘I’d say I have over at least 1000 different models and teddies, the only problem is i’m worrying that soon i’m going to run out of room.’’

Not only do I collect model Poodles but I also have three Poodles myself, some are rescued and some I breed. I’d definitely say that the dogs are my life but i’d like to think i’m not too obsessed, although some people may think otherwise. Alot of my collection is expensive but I don’t collect anything for the money, I also go to charity shops and car boots...I just love anything that is to do with Poodles! I’d say I have over at 1000 different models and teddies, the only problem is im worryng that soon i’m going to run out of room.

KASEY RAE PASSFIELD RUSSIAN DOLL COLLECTOR

1 3

I wouldnt say that I collect anything in particular but when I was younger I used to go through stages of liking different things. I once started collecting russian dolls but then when I got into my teens I became more interested in music and thats when I started to collect vinyls.

I suppose the main reason why i have so much stuff is just because I find it hard to throw things away. I normally just collect random bits that I find and like, then just shove them in the cupboard and usually completely forget about them.

I absolutely love anything thats bright and colourful, I just can’t hold myself back from buying stuff! I’ve always loved bright colours but wasn’t till I was a teenager that I started dying my hair and wearing crazy clothes. I find alot of the clothes in charity shops or online and make alot of clothes myself or edit bits to brighten them up! I think alot people wonder how I manage to stick to constantly wearing these clothes but to be honest it makes me feel really happy and alot of other people to!

My biggest collection is probably my clothes but I do have quite alot of vinyl sleeves aswell. I don’t usually look at who they are, I just buy them if I like the designs and colours. Half the time I just give the actual records to my parents. I have no idea how much stuff i’ve got, I find alot of bits at bootfairs and stuff. I certainly havn’t inherited my style from my family, infact my dad is the complete opposite. He’s more into the gothic scene, wears alot of black and loves death metal although I do think he finds my look interesting as its such a comparison to his. He’s currently building me a rainbow bike, I literally can’t wait till it’s ready...it will complete my look.
