THE CONSEQUENCES OF A HUNG PARLIAMENT

THE SUMMER SELL-OFF

With the long-awaited results of the post hung Parliament political wrangling over, and with a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition the answer, Tyson Appadoo assesses the effects of it all on the financial markets

THE SUMMER MONTHS are a traditionally quiet period for the markets – “Sell in May and Stay Away” is classic saying in the City. Usually at this time of the year, all the major players in the markets around the world take their hard earned cash and go somewhere exotic to relax and unwind before the autumn begins. This year, however, I

have noticed a complete contrast to the norm. There are a few possible explanations for this, but in my opinion the one at the forefront of the change in attitude is the increased vulnerability and susceptibility of the stock market to bad news following the credit crunch. Greek government bonds were recently downgraded to ‘junk’ status by

1 BREMONT EP 120 Bremont founders Nick and Giles English once again demonstrate their love of aviation with this watch, whose name derives from the serial number of a 1942 Spitfire MKV that shot down seven enemy aircraft during WWII. Both the chronograph dial and the beautifully executed, propeller-shaped winding rotor are made from actual components removed from EP120 during its restoration. Price: £6,450 www.bremont.com 2 CHOPARD Chopard’s innovative L.U.C. facility in Fleurier has developed an entirely new high-frequency escapement capable of reaching a cadence of eight to 10 hertz, the equivalent of up to 72,000 vibrations per hour, more than two-and-a-half times that of a conventional watch. In simple terms, this reduces the period of time between the “tick” and the “tock” to a mere fivehundredths of a second, thus making for a velvetsmooth progression of the seconds hand. The new escapement is expected to be introduced in Chopard’s high-end L.U.C models within the year. Pictured: Tourbillon Tech Steel Wings. Price: £70,300. www.chopard.com »

The financial markets usually tend to be somewhat quieter during the summer months as the banking world heads off to chase the sun. Yet thanks to the precarious position of the markets as well as the World Cup, things will be slightly different this time round, writes Tyson Appadoo
