THIS SEASON Welcome from our Chair of Trustees The year 2020 brings another raft of great productions to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. This brochure covers the shows through to May, but we already have many shows booked for later in the year, and you can get your tickets online or via our box office. In January we welcome the University of York’s Drama Society to the theatre for the first time with their production of A Tale of Two Cities. The new year also heralds the regular visit from Oddsocks with their special take on The Adventures of Pinocchio. Be sure to get your tickets quickly before they have all gone. Both shows are great treats to banish the January blues.

This season contains no fewer than nine musicals, so there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy. The musicals are Made in Dagenham, Chicago, The Sorcerer, Guys and Dolls, Calamity Jane, Crush:The Musical, Legally Blonde: The Musical, Wind in the Willows and Hello Dolly!. The Rowntree Players are bringing something very special to the theatre in April when they stage The Missing Peace: Creating A Life After Death. This is a specially devised one act play based on the book by Ian Donaghy. Interspersed around the plays and musicals are some fantastic concerts, dance school shows and our annual Community Choir Festival, featuring 28 choirs over 7 performances. Alexis believes that love should transcend wealth and distinction, so they visit the local sorcerer. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR STAGE MANAGERS AND CREW With a packed programme of shows, concerts and performances taking place each month at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, all of which are entirely run by volunteers, we’re constantly looking for enthusiastic people with an interest in theatre to join our active team of stage crews who do everything from climbing ladders and follow spotting to flying scenery. Volunteers should be aged 16 and over. No experience is necessary for many stage crew positions, though if you have an interest in lighting or sound, training can be given. We also need stage managers to run our shows, from one night concerts and dance shows to two-week runs of musicals. FACILITIES & ACCESS

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a mile to the north of York city centre on Haxby Road, next to the Nuffield Hospital. If you are travelling from outside York, follow the brown signs from the York North outer ring road (A1237). The theatre’s postcode is YO31 8TA.

The theatre auditorium has a seating capacity of 362 on two levels. All seats have an unobstructed view of the stage and generous leg room. A limited number of children’s booster seats are available free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis.

First York bus routes 1 and 5 stop outside the theatre. Free car parking is available during performances in the NestlĂŠ car park behind the Yearsley swimming pool. Neither the theatre nor NestlĂŠ can NEWEARSWICK RINGROAD accept liability for loss by theft or damage to cars or their contents CAR PARK while using the EXIT car park. ONLY

The theatre does not have a bar, but a selection of soft drinks, confectionery and ice cream is available to purchase before the show and during the interval.

The theatre is accessible to patrons with disabilities. There are three dedicated wheelchair spaces at the rear of the stalls with seats for accompanying carers. Please advise at the time of booking if a wheelchair space is required. Step-free access to the auditorium is available. The front of house stewards will be pleased to provide guidance and assistance where necessary. An induction loop for the hard of hearing is provided, covering the stalls seating.
