Dog Walkers / Owners Talking to everyday dog walkers helped gain an understanding of the every day user and how they groom their dogs. I asked several questions related to dog grooming and grooming how they groom their dog, the results can be shown below.

How often do you groom your dog? ”I’ll give him a brush every now and again, maybe once a week, and a wash if he’s gotten muddy after a long walk, I dont have a routine, just when ever it needs to be done really.” Lynda. ”Ill give him a wash whenever he starts to smell quite bad, which is ususally once every couple of months. I give his coat a brush when I can or it when it looks a bit messy, but mostly ill take him to the local dog salon and get everything done.

Do you have any problems while grooming your dog? “Her fur usually clogs up my the brush after 5 minutes of brushing when she is malting in the summer, so I either have to change brush, or stop and take all the fur out’’ ”She hates me clipping her nails, as soon as she can see me with the clippers she will run and hide, she starts to rustle about in my arms which makes it difficult to cut them properly.” Tina.

What would you want to make grooming your dog easier? ”Well a kit of all the brushes and shampoos, scissors. Ive had Benson here for 2 years and I still dont know what to buy, Thats why I just take him to the groomers every now and again and, saves any hassle” Suzanne.

Dog baths are commonly used in grooming salons and as they are a specialist tool for the grooming process. Home groomers often use their own bath to wash their dog, eliminating the need for a complex product, however there are baths available for home users.

Nail Hygiene A range of tools currently exists for the same task, however each design may vary depending on their tagret market.

Grooming tables are a required item in professional grooming salons, as they have several features that make the groomers job easier. Almost all grooming tables have a harness/leash attached to them, as well as the option to adjust the table height. These features are key as they harness holds the dog still, while the adjustable height feature allows the groomer to accomodate all sizes of dogs.

24

Mick,Joe

Current products available to beginner home groomers could be improved to make this task safer, as there is currently an area for the user to make a mistake and harm their dog.

Grooming Tables

25

Mick,Joe Joe Hill

Cutting a dogs nails is a delicate part of the grooming process. This is because, internally,a dog has an area known as the “quick” which is filled with blood vessels. If cut can cause the dog to bleed excessivly. For this reason home groomers leave this task to the professionals.

Mood Board Form & Characteristics

Brief You have been asked to design a grooming product for the everyday user that makes grooming their dog easier. Your product MUST:

Brushing ,Clippering,Eye cleaning,Ear cleaning,Nail cleaning,Bathing,Shampooing & Drying

Some of these tasks can be difficult to carry out depending on the temperament and size of the dog, the skill and experience of the user and the environment in which the grooming takes place. One of the key issues with the dog grooming process is the ‘hands free factor’. Being able to keep the dog in a secure still location is a challenge problem that many dog owners encounter and hence frequently use dog groomers to save time.

• Hold the dog still for grooming • Ensure the dog is comfortable and secure during the process • Be suitable for a domestic user • Match the style of Omlet • Be Easy to store

Your product SHOULD: • • • • • •

Have a second use – i.e boot liner, dog bed, cushion, etc Be able to be used inside and outside Good strength to weight ratio Be able to fit most small / medium sized dogs Be relatively easy to clean Fit into the home environment

Your Design COULD • • •

As it is commonly accepted that the standard bath width is 700mm, a wide bath is considered to be any bath with a diameter of 800mm and above. Large baths with dimensions over 1800mm in length and over 800mm wide tend to be freestanding baths.

Choosing the right bed isnt as simple as ‘that one’! With such a large range available, different sizes, colours, styles and types, the decision isn’t necessarily easy. The size of the dog is the most important factor, if the correct size isn’t choosen, then its clearly not going serve its primary purpose anyway.
