DEPLOYED TENSEGRITY STRUCTURE

The Machine Starts “The Machine Starts was a new media performance, involving parkour, a-Capella, and spoken word artists. The 4-part photo series above is a parkourable structure of my design which unfolds between acts, utilizing a fascination of mine: tensegrity. I constructed it while memorizing poetic lines to perform. Setup Time: 2-4 min \\ Strike Time: 1-3 min 3

Gasketed Loadbearing Facade I was promoted to Project Manager in my second year at IEF, starting with a low-income residential tower. I had to complete a bid set with an aggressive schedule, which I met. I became responsible for ordering material for our scope of the project, which included more than $500,000 in shims alone. I further developed details, fabrication tickets, and coordinated with concrete plank & prefab. stair subcontractors through construction. 5

Full-Gut Apartment Renovation The first project I managed at PorterFanna Architecture was the renovation of a 2300 s.f. Brooklyn Co-Op apartment. I filed with the DoB, got board approval, bid, and saw this project through punch-list. Communicating directly with clients is very different from communicating with contractors. I was surprised how difficult it could be sometimes to convey an idea through drawing, and how easy it could be through rendering. 7

Coalescing after Impact, Shockwave, Settling Excavation, our arrival to the Red Planet provoked the analysis of and formal arguments of the Impact Crater, as observed from recent photos taken from the Curiosity mission.

DOWNTOWN HOUSING COMPLEX - 3D PRINT MODEL

Screened Surveillance I derived a housing scheme after observing the Tropes evident in the Robie House: the use of overhangs and windows to screen the private from public, seeing without being seen. In combination with a hearth-central organization, a 3-tower apartment complex was designed for artist residents in Troy, NY.

RENDER OF INTERVENTION AT EXISTING HYDE MUSEUM

STRUCTURAL CONNECTION EXPLODED AXON

Expanding the Hyde I started with case studies of various museums and a half-semester affect analysis of an artifact chosen from the Hyde collection. A presentation of design schemes took place at the Hyde Museum in a large scale installation fabricated by students. My roles in its production were running the mill, managing the production of 3D prints, and producing boards.

Sunken Strata This project took on the development of the Arabsat Headquarters (original design by Heneghan Peng Architects). Our aim was to expose the potential of the interior by creating an open plan and dynamic facade. Our goals were directed greatly by the research of contemporary office culture and productivity.

SHANZAI CONSERVATORY PLAN

山寨主義 The title of this work comes from the concept of Shanzhaiism, a cultural phenomena especially evident in China’s Dafen village. The title is a play on the literal meaning of Shanzhai, mountain village. The architecture is a seclusion of culture functioning more like a monastery than a stronghold, aimed at reproducing the entirety of Art.

Responding to the Fukushima crisis, the Dark Ecology museum is a mobile deployable Architecture capable of remediation both physically in excavation and by education. The tectonic researched in the left spread is a real time befringement surface analysis, using a polarizing filter to directly observe the forces evident in various deflection cases.

COPING & EIFS FIELD INSTALL SECTION

Flushing Commons: Coping F.I. My first project at Island Exterior Fabricators was to generate a coping & EIFS field-install set for a panelized mixed-use tower. I created drawings and details for parapet coping throughout the building. I was responsible for material take-offs, fabrication tickets, and coordinating with the crew in the field for installation. These are by far the most densely dimensioned & annotated drawings I have produced. 23

ISLAND EXTERIOR WINDOWS PLAN DETAILS @ INSIDE & OUTSIDE CORNERS

IEF: IEW Brochure & Details I was tasked with creating graphics for a brochure advertising IEF’s ability to fabricate custom window systems. I collaged the cover and end pages using available photographs from previous project documentation where our window system was implemented. My involvement in this task helped segue to further development of window details being utilized in a proposal for a high-end residential tower. 25

SECTION DETAIL & TERRACOTTA / ACM PANEL JOINT

High-End Residential Tower A tower was proposed to occupy an atypical site, erected from a crash-deck on stilts straddling an existing building. The detail above shows how bridge-jacks would support the bottom-most panels of a load-bearing system, adjusting the height for deflection as the upper panels went in, & shims were progressively added. I and my partner from RPI produced a set of more than 100 facade system details before the project went on hiatus. 27

PLAN DETAIL @ INTERIOR SHEAR WALL

Shear Wall Panel Details As project manager I spent a significant amount of time coordinating with out engineering consultant to size members & develop details. I learned a lot in a short time about how an engineer thinks, and what are the critical elements to be aware of when designing your welds. While ordering steel, economic situations that year allowed me to order 90% of the steel beams & HSS directly from a mill, seriously improving the budget. 29

Historical Development

SHPO EXTERIOR ELEVATION

JOSEPH DANIELE

In a small town in Ohio, the waterfront and a number of historical buildings are being planned for development, in the pursuit of a major grant from the preservation committee. I produced plans and elevations for SHPO, the preservation organization, acting as the developer in what will be an architect-led design-build project.

INTERIOR & TERRACE ARCHITECTURAL PLANS

Apartment and Terrace Our office has been acting as the Architect of Record for an apartment renovation, which I picked up part-way through the project. It was the third year of a project fraught with difficulties, mostly due to existing deficiencies inherent to the existing developer-driven building. While managing, I coordinated with landscape, lighting, engineering, HVAC, and expediter consultants, and updated our drawings accordingly. 31

Partial Apartment Renovation

The successful completion of my first renovation USA Office:212-273-1100 Mobile: 917-302-3784 www.porterfanna.com info@porterf in the Brooklyn Co-Op helped the office net another project in the same building. This renovation only involved a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, but took surprisingly just as much work if not more to approve design for tile and kitchen layout. I learned on this project how to seek opportunity for design: in this case it was a screen occluding an undesirable view from the kitchen window.
