Video frames are in form of analogue signals and are captured using a digital video camera. The digital video camera performs the sampling on each frame. Sampling is the process of obtaining discrete sample data from the continuous analogue signal for every fixed time interval. The digital video camera obtains the discrete sample data from the analogue signal frames by dividing the screen horizontally and vertically into different samples respectively. Quantization is the process of converting the attribute of each sample data into a digital code by using a predefined scale. Digital codes, such as C and A, are used to represent different colours like the following table.

The frame on the left hand side shows a letter ‘H’, while the corresponding digital codes are shown on the right hand side. There is a lot of repetitive data in the digital code of the frames. We can use the following compression rule to compress the amount of data. Compression rule: Convert consecutive digital codes to [digital code][number of consecutive codes] e.g. AAA → A3, BBBBBB → B6, C→ C. Therefore the above frame is compressed as the following codes.

(a) Consider the following frame,

If white is represented as digital code ‘C’, grey is represented as digital code ‘A’, what are the digital codes of the frame shown above? (3 marks) (b) Carry out the same compression and apply the described compression rule on the codes generated in part (a). (3 marks) (c) Describe how we can define compression ratio to measure the compression. (4 marks)

(2 marks) (b) A spell checker is used on a word processing program to check the spellings in the text according to a built-in dictionary. (2 marks) (c) Alignment is a feature that lines a block of text up in a particular way. Text can be left aligned, right aligned, centred or justified. (2 marks) (d) Mail merging allows the user to create a standard letter and then merge it with data from a spreadsheet, database or other text file. (2 marks) (e) Information of a bitmap image has to be stored about every pixel in the image. A vector graphics file stores an image as a series of instructions. It uses up much less storage space than a bitmap image. (2 marks) 2.
