Evocations of 70s Gozo

Evelyn Gibbs , born in Liverpool in 1905, was a printmaker, draughtsperson, painter, war artist and pioneer art educationalist. Her initial work shows remarkable facility towards representing realism in the classical tradition, however she progressively moved towards abstraction. After a two-year scholarship at the British School at Rome Gibbs became a lecturer at Goldsmiths College. In 1943 she received a commission from Kenneth Clark to document the war effort in the UK and also in the same year founded The Midland Group of Artists to support artists in the region. Following the end of the war she married Sir Hugh Willatt, later Secretary-General of the Arts Council, and in the sixties moved to London. During this time, partly inspired by her travels in the UK, Corsica and Italy, she executed large format prints and etchings: using incisive and fluent lines she translated her fascination with the landscape and geological formations. In 1969 they bought a farmhouse in the hamlet of Santu Pietru in Gharb, Gozo. The island, which she continued to visit until 1984, was an inspiration for her work. Etchings and lithographs from her regular visits show the salt pans, rock formations and the landscape of Gozo. Whilst in Gozo, Gibbs formed part of a circle of international artists who had a strong influence on the local art scene, including Victor Pasmore, Julian Trevelyan, Mary Fedden, Hilde Goldschmidt and Barbara Huxley. In 1977 she held a solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta. Gibbs also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries and other major venues. The Aberystwyth University held a touring retrospective of her work in 2001. Evelyn Gibbs’ works are held by the Royal Academy, British Museum, the Tate Gallery, V&A Museum, the Arts Council, the Ashmolean Museum in London and other private and public collections.
