Muted The Night A piece for orchestra by Joe Bates
Full score in C
Instrumentation 3 Flutes (2nd doubling Alto, 3rd doubling Piccolo) 3 Oboes (3rd doubling Cor Anglais) (Cor Anglais tuned c. 15c flat) 3 Clarinets in B (3rd doubling Clarinet in E) 2 Bassoons (tuned c. 15c flat) 1 Contrabassoon 4 Horns in F 3 Trumpets in B (Tumpets 2 and 3 tuned 50c flat) 2 Tenor Trombones 1 Bass Trombone 1 Tuba Timpani Percussion 1 (Triangle, Glockenspiel, Suspended Cymbal, Woodblock) Percussion 2 (Suspended Cymbal, 2 Cowbells, 2 Tom-toms, Tenor Drum, Bass Drum) Harp (six strings detuned by 50c) Piano 14 1st Violins 12 2nd Violins 10 Violas 8 Cellos 6 Double Basses
Performance Directions Quartertones All microtonal accidentals deviate from conventional accidentals by 50c:
50c sharper than a flat 50c flatter than a sharp 50c sharper than a sharp
All players that play microtones (except the 2nd Trumpets and Harp) are assigned to two groups: one group plays B, F and C, the other plays C, F and G. As such, no player has to play more than three different microtonal pitches.
50c Detunings The 2nd Trumpets should be flattened by a full 50c, enabling them to play any quartertone using conventional fingerings. The parts are transposed such that a G sounds as concert F, not F.
15c Detunings
Percussion notes Timpani: 4 standard drums, pitched C2-G3, 1 piccolo drum, pitched G3-C4 Glockenspiel: 3 Octaves Suspended Cymbal: if only one suspended cymbal is available, it should be positioned so as to be accessable by both players Sticks: Percussion 1 – triangle beater, glockenspiel mallets, snare drum sticks. Percussion 2 – soft sticks, snare drum sticks.
Notes The duration of the work is 3'30". This score is notated in C. Written for the London Symphony Orchestra through the LSO Discovery Panufnik Composers Scheme, generously supported by Lady Hamlyn and the Helen Hamlyn Trust. The title of this piece is taken from Wallace Stevens's poem, Peter Quince at the Clavier. A print of this hung above my piano while I composed this work; it seeped into my writing.
The Bassons and the Cor Anglais are detuned by a smaller and more imprecise amount. They should be flattened by around 15c, but need not be in tune with one another. The detuning should be enough for an audible beating to be heard when played with an in-tune instrument. The desired sound is similar to that of an electric organ, which uses detunings to achieve a thick, pulsing sound. This is indicated in the parts and score with a line above the stave.
Harp Detunings The harp should re-tune the following C and F strings, with the C strings tuned 50c flat and the F strings tuned 50c sharp. This allows it to play all six quartertones (B, F, C, C, F and G). The part is transposed. On the altered C strings, every quarter sharp becomes a sharp and every quarter flat becomes a natural. On the altered F strings, every quarter sharp becomes a natural and every quarter flat becomes a flat.
String Vibrato In general, the strings should use conventional, idiomatic vibrato, unless "non vib." is specified. In certain places, the amount of vibrato is specified: "Expressive vibrato" – the vibrato should be more pronounced than usual, but should not distort the pitch significantly. "Extreme vibrato" – the vibrato should be very wide, such that it significantly distorts the pitch.
The detuned harp strings, with pedals in middle (natural) position.
