Ismael Valdez Vergara, Santiago, Chile March - June 2013

The Boutique Apart Hotel Forestal is a project that explores multiple programs on a narrow façade building. It’s located in front of a beautiful park in a typical neighbourhood in Santiago Centre.

North facade Orthofotography

The idea of the central void is to generate circulation and views between the streets that surround the hotel, so people can pass trough the building into the park, and for the guests to see the park and the city in all their dimensions.

General Plan and section

Mass and Void first exploration.

Circulation aproximation.

Mass, Void and circulation.

Program division in M2 by color: Public, private and services.

Final model showing divisions, mass void and circulation.

Buin Zoo , Buin, Chile August - November 2015

The project aim was to restructure the urban zone near the zoo entrance and train station. Both roadsides (zoo entrance and train station) are separated by a big highway, so both are highly unorganized. The objective was to create an identifiable zoo entrance and connect pedestrian, bus, car and train traffic.

Section C-C Section A-A

The proximity to the nearby the highway affords the opportunity for a elevated entrance to the zoo, highlighting the moment of arrival. This moment influnced the design of all functions within the train station, pedestrian bridge and entrance. Pedestrian movements were mapped and analyzed to inform specific spatial conditions. These conditions endeavor to choreograph multiple pedestrian flows.

Existing urban elevation.

Coquimbo, Chile March - June 2015

Coquimbo is one of the first coast cities in Chile. Due to its topography, It started developing a new type of pedestrian circulation known as the Zig-zags. This circulations is the only way to get to the top of the hill. The end of the zig-zags leads to a currently vacant flat area. The project proposes to revive this area by articulating new public spaces within private residence blocks.

The new housing blocks generate a park between the interspace, which is the private extenstion of the zigzags therefore continuing the existing void. The front area of the site is gifted as new public space, containing cafes and shops and gives the residents access to a new commercial area. The promenade manages these situations through controlled access between the public and private spaces.

Cajón del Maipo, Chile. April, 2016.

The Creation of a 1:1 gridshell model to inform our personal projects, on how timber reacts with double courvature and its specific detailing and parametric design.

Working with pre-existing structures and how the gridhsell interacts with them. How two different tectonic and stereotomic structures deal with each other and how the detailing becomes fundamental for the project.

Santiago, Chile. July, 2016. The chair is folded and bent by hand using rebar, steel profiles and metal wire, this process avoids traditional fixing methods such as welding.. Two layers of doubly curved rebar are attached to a steel profile then sewed with metal wire.

The ergonomic properties where calculated to be adapted to the chair flexibility. The chair stables itself with the weight of a person. The gap between the legs and the backrest locks itselve and adds additional rigidity to the chair.
