Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

techniques are: - CNC cutting or two dimensional fabrication is the most common technique. Ie laser cutter - Production strategies included for 2d fabrication include contouring, triangulation and unfolding - Subtractive fabrication involves the removal of a specific volume of material form from solids - Formative fabrication, involves mechanical forces , restricting forms, heat or steam is applied to the material to mould it into the desired shape. Computer Numeric fabrication allows for two dimensional paramentric modelling, where surfaces can be rolled out, and triangulated to form a shape. CNC interprets the parametric modelling, coded in software, to translate to three dimensional world through laser cutting. The origins of digital design, dates back to the Computer Aided Three-dimensional interactive application sourced by Jim Glymph, for the Fish Sculpture at the entrance of a retail center. Frank Ghery considered the physical model a much more informative source than the flat digital manipulation of surfaces on a computer screen, thus Ghery considered the medium as a form of translation not a medium of conception.

Week Three

Surface Creation

when scripting it is important to label well, so that when you go back to made different iterations it is more efficient. Additionally, the iterations you can use are limited as the model needed to ensure it could stand up.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

I used two three dimensional surfaces, to create a vast aray of light patterns, cast through shadow. The perferated panels on the left create an enchanting chanel for light to stream through to the interior volume. The varietion in the closed panels casts intriguing shadows past the structure

The two panels, vary slightly in the amount of curvature, to create an interesting geometric shape, that is still structurally sound.


Week Four

Laser Cutting

When laser cutting it is importan to ensure that your tabs are large enough to fold. Additionally when sending your file off to laser cut there must not be any pollysurfaces only curves, which can be solved by using the make 2d comman and mesh.

Week Five

With the complex shape i was dealing with the platonic octahedron, it was difficult to ensure i didnt get edges not supported by any frame work. Thus i had to reduce the size of my shapes that i extracted with.

Week Five

Isometric

My model, creates a very earthy mountainess impression. It demonstrates larges bodies of porosity, with large internal space used as void. The angular qualities created by the octahedron, allow for intimate spaces. It creates a diomand shape that passes through channels of the shape, and creates organic windows. The angularity of the octahedron creates spectacular views within the structure, casting shadows and allowing for interesting light patterns to seep through.

Task 01 Matrix i developed the three dimensional surfaces, as they created the most visually dynamic patterns, that cast intricate shadows. The perferation in the left panels allows for an intricate pattern of light to shine through into the waffle structure, while the closed panel had directional pull through curve attractors to create a modern and sharpe visual effect

Task 02 Matrix i chose to develop the octahedron as it create a more intricate set of void spaces. However, it was difficult to ge the scale of the shapes correct in order to have a shape that was structurally sound
