IIFC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE 2019

STEPHEN SAVAGE 10 Years. Ten years of what indiefilm.com called “The Greatest Little Film Festival On Earth”, and the LA Weekly touted as a “Mini Sundance”. I couldn’t be more proud of how far this festival has come, and of my partner, Trinity Houston, and the IIFC team who have made it all possible. I had high hopes when I first started laying out the foundation for IIFC in 2009, but the past decade has proven to me that even the highest hopes can fall short of some amazing realities. And now, IIFC moves into this milestone season so strong and so viable, I am literally in awe of its potential, as every year the quality of filmmaking gets better, and bigger, and more inspiring. And to add even more awe to my already huge exuberance, the audiences keep coming in greater numbers. To say we have come into our own falls short of the mark. IIFC has come so far in a decade that we can now say, without fear of exaggeration, that we are truly one of the “Go To” festivals for filmmakers and film lovers in California. And we show no sign of slowing down. So, let’s make 2019, Idyllwild’s 10th season, the best one yet, by ensuring not only the best selection of independent films ever assembled, but also by promising to inspire, thrill, and excite, all who come this March 5th through 10th, as we celebrate the spirit of independent filmmaking worldwide. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the Festival.

“We’re filmmakers. The art form we’ve chosen has the power to inspire the world.” -Stephen Savege

IIFC EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

TRINITY HOUSTON During an interview by CNN’s Don Lemon in the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, Trinity Houston spoke of her harrowing ordeal while on a video shoot in the Caribbean Islands as though it were an everyday event. However, the truth was far more complex than Trinity’s modest, get-the-job-done nature would have us believe. Armed with a satellite phone and sheer determination, she managed to arrange for the rescue for hundreds of US citizens stranded on the tiny island of St. Maarten, via military planes, using a few well-timed favors from good friends with political connections. It was nothing short of a miracle. But to hear Trinity speak of it, it was all in a day’s work. Whether it be producing feature films and television programming, or concert DVDs and streaming events for legendary musical artists, or overseeing the IIFC which has been deemed The Greatest Little Film Festival on Earth, Trinity does it all with a style and flare that makes it look easy. Trinity’s strong background in Entertainment, Marketing, Management, Distribution, Event Planning, and Public Relations has contributed significantly to her

success. As Marketing Director for a number of renowned Caribbean resorts, one of Trinity’s creations has been Vacation Entertainment Television, broadcast daily on travel and leisure channels in numerous languages globally. She also made quite a splash as the creator and producer of INdTelevision for Time Warner Cable, an arts and entertainment programming entity spotlighting the latest talent in Independent Film, Music and Culture. More recently, she has become video production coordinator for a number of international corporations including Honda and Coca-Cola. Her latest producing venture, the veteran-themed motion picture The Wind of Heaven, written by Stephen Savage, is slated for production. The film will feature an all-star cast and a crew of some of Hollywood’s best artists. Along with fellow producers David Minasian & Martina Webster, Trinity will be working closely with iconic rock artists Roger Taylor of Queen, and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues overseeing the film’s groundbreaking soundtrack.

"Trinity does it all with a style and flare that makes it look easy. "

The Idyllwild International Festival Of Cinema is proud that as Festival Executive Producer, Trinity is taking the festival into its 10th season, bigger and stronger than ever, with an eye toward the future. It is this same type of visionary idealism that first launched her career into the world of international entertainment.

TEAM IIFC - KEY STAFF IVAN BORNTRAGER has been a resident of Idyllwild for almost thirty years, and spent most of his life working as a projectionist, including a decade at The Rustic Theatre. He has been running the projection booth for this festival since day one. Ivan is currently working as the assistant brewer, at the new Idyllwild Brewpub. He is also a writer, photographer, mus cian, and actor, and won best actor at this festival in 2011.

MARK ROGERS, this is his second year assisting with Q and A at the Film Festival. Having been involved in all aspects of theatrical productions in the Inland Empire for over 25 years, he is now looking forward to expanding into the areas of recorded media. As part of this expanded interest, he is excited to be continuing his participation with the Idyllwild Film Festival.

SHANNON NG has been in Idyllwild 6 years as the Branch Manager at the Idyllwild Library, Riverside County Library System. This will be Shannon's 5th year at IIFC and has helped coordinate the Idyllwild Children's Film Festival. Shannon says, "I especially appreciate short films. Like a short story when compared to a novel, they are often closer, in form and meaning, to poetry than a longer film."

HARRIS KNIGHT-MOORE, a retired Public School Special Education Teacher made his home in Idyllwild in 2005. He and his wife Evelyn have been long standing volunteers at the festival. Harris says, "I have deepened my understanding and resultant jubilant admiration of the cinematic story teller's creative process by attending the Film Maker's Seminars and our post film screening Q & A's. I love our Festival of Cinema guests."

EVELYN JOY KNIGHT-MOORE loves sharing the Idyllwild Artsy community with others. She finds volunteering at the Film Festival allows her to promote Idyllwild and gives her the opportunity to watch various genres of movies.

JIM DUNN is a Former Marine and Retired Furniture Salesman. Now living his life in "paradise" Idyllwild, he spends his time doing photography and takes on acting roles which are filmed locally. Jim says, "I love volunteering for the Film Festival, meeting new people and seeing friends each year. This is my 6th year, and Im really excited about how the festival is developing."

STEVEN T ZEKO has been volunteering at the festival for 5 years. Although not a local, his charm and his humor has made him an invaluable part of the team. Currently working for the City of Los Angeles, he is also a budding author of the soon to be published fantasy novel "The Antecedents.”

KRISSY BROWN has been working with IIFC for the last 5 years. If it involves Graphic Design or Desktop Publishing, it’s her passion. Krissy regularly collaborates with musicians, artists, authors, filmmakers and corporations to produce unique and beautiful works of art.

CHIC FOJTIK moved to the mountain community of Idyllwild in 2004 where he has volunteered with many local agencies and events. This is Chic's 6th year with IIFC, where his vivacious personality and acting experience fits right in.

CHERI MACK is a long time Idyllwild resident and is very active within the community. Cheri loves volunteering for the Film Festival with this being her 6th year.

IIFC EXECUTIVE ARTIST LIAISON

ANDREA CHARLES The first thing a filmmaker hears upon arriving in Idyllwild to register for the festival, aside from the mountain breeze and chattering of birds and squirrels, is the lovely British accent of IIFC Executive Artist Liaison and founder/director of the Idyllwild Children’s Festival, Andrea Charles. Andrea now enters her sixth season at IIFC in her dual role as voting committee chairperson and all around filmmaker guide.

“Great Britain’s Loss Is Idyllwild’s Gain!”

Hailing from Sussex, England, Andrea found herself living in the Californian mountain top village of Idyllwild purely by chance in 2012. After a very brief settling in period, she quickly became a well known “Mountain Local”, and soon after, met Festival Director Stephen Savage who thought her winning personality and organizational skills would be a huge asset to IIFC. After some begging and pleading,

Savage convinced her to come on board. and the rest, as they say, is history. Apart from her tireless work with IIFC, Andrea’s love of animals, kids, and people in general are her main passions. Not only did she spearhead the addition of the Children’s Festival portion of IIFC, she is also a Life Coach, Travel Blogger and the best selling author of a children's book entitled “Harvey’s Favorite Day”, which is a fun, read-aloud book, written through the eyes of her own dog, Harvey. The book is available at Amazon, and other retail sites, and has become a favorite of kids worldwide. As Andrea solidifies her position as an IIFC organizational powerhouse, she never loses sight of her commitment to treating each and every filmmaker who screens at Idyllwild with the respect and courtesy they deserve as artists and people.

IIFC HONORARY CHAIRMAN AND FESTIVAL ADVISOR

WOLFGANG BODISON From year one of this amazing festival, one name has been a constant source of inspiration and support, and his relationship with IIFC just gets stronger and more beneficial to us each and every year. Wolfgang Bodison has shared the silver screen with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and worked alongside some of the industries most powerful directors, screenwriters, and producers. From his breakout role as Lance Corporal Dawson in the iconic film “A Few Good Men,” up to and including his innumerable appearances on some of television’s best known series, Wolfgang has been an actor much admired by his multitude of fans, and a man much

loved by those who know and have worked with him over the years. As an actor and an acting couch (being one of the incredible teachers at the prestigious Playhouse West acting school in Los Angeles), and as the director of another excellent film showcase, The Playhouse West Film Festival, Wolfgang continues to inspire young talent on a daily basis even as his own career moves ever upward. It is our honor and privilege to be able to say, Wolfgang Bodison is one of ours, and will be a true feather in our cap for as long as he keeps accepting our heartfelt invitations to return. Wolfgang Bodison, IIFC Honorary Chairman.

“Shared the silver screen with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and directors.”

IIFC BIDS FAREWELL TO OUR DEAR FRIEND AND GRAND JURY MEMBER

KRISTOFF ST. JOHN The Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema said goodbye to one of its own on February 3rd with the sad passing of Kristoff St. John. He was an eleven-time nominee and two-time Emmy© Winner as well as a multiple recipient of the NAACP Image Award. Kristoff had been a friend of the Cinema Fest since 2014 when he and his father Christopher brought their stunning and impactful documentary “A Man Called God” to IIFC, where they took home top honors in Documentary production and directing. Kristoff and IIFC founder and director Stephen Savage first connected and became friends in Idyllwild in 2009 through the legendary cinematographer Baird Bryant, who DP’d both “A Man Called God” and Savage’s LA Film School thesis movie “Turquoise”. Both Savage and St. John had spent large portions of their childhoods in Idyllwild (though they had never met before), and both were mentored at one time or another by Baird Bryant. Baird was infamous for having been

the main camera op on the cult classic, “Easy Rider”, as well as having shot the iconic real-time footage of Hell’s Angel “security” guards stabbing to death a black hippy kid during the Rolling Stones Altamont, California concert in 1969. That footage ended up making the edit in the Stones concert film, “Gimme Shelter”.

“Starting in 2019, a new award will be given each year at the festival in Kristoff’s name.”

Kristoff began his impressive career as a child actor in the 1970’s, leading him into regular appearances on dozens of network television series, including “Happy Days”, “The Cosby Show”, and “The Jamie Foxx Show” among many others. But it was the lead role of Neil Winters in the long-running daytime drama “The Young and the Restless” that finally lifted him to the status of international star. Before he passed, St. John, and Savage had been discussing a possible documentary project dealing with depression among people in the arts and entertainment industries. A subject near to the hearts of both men, whose families have struggled to overcome for generations. Kristoff’s own son, Julian, committed suicide while a patient at a mental health facility in Long Beach, California in 2014. Kristoff is survived by his former wife Mia, his daughters Paris and Lola, as well as his fiancée Kseniya Mikhaleva. He was 52 years old. Mr. Savage and the entire IIFC team are saddened by the loss of this amazing man. Starting in 2019, a new award will be given each year at the festival in Kristoff’s name, presented to a local Idyllwild resident or organization who has exhibited a true commitment to the needs of the community.

IIFC WeSPARK AWARD WINNER 2019

BARBARA BAIN Each year, IIFC awards a very special trophy to a member of the Hollywood film and television industry, the WeSpark Award. This award is given in honor of the late actress Wendie Jo Sperber, whose tireless work on behalf of those battling cancer and their families through her WeSpark Foundation, was and still is an inspiration to those dealing with that emotional and financially crippling illness. And in memory of Wendie, we at IIFC carry on with our tradition of recognizing people in our industry who are extremely giving of their time and energy to help others. Past WeSpark Award winners include Nancy Allen and our own Anne Archer. And now, for 2019, we bestow the Honor on actress Barbara Bain, whose efforts and energy have helped champion the cause of literacy throughout the US and the world. Barbara is of course well known for her many television and film roles, as well as her stage work and her teaching stints at the Actors Studio West. Barbara’s

long list of credits includes her iconic role as Cinnamon Carter In the original Mission Impossible TV series (where she starred alongside then-husband Martin Landau), Murder She Wrote, CSI, and the Tracey Ullman show, among many many others. Barbara holds the unique status of being the first woman ever to win three Emmys in three consecutive years, and was honored in 2016 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, presented to her by the city of Hollywood and her dear friends Dick Van Dyke and Ed Asner, who were on hand for the unveiling. She has performed with some of Hollywood's great leading men and more than a few of its grand leading ladies, and in all that time she never took a back seat to any of them. We at IIFC are truly honored to have Barbara Bain as our WeSPARK Award winner for our 10th anniversary and look forward to seeing more of Barbara’s talent in film and television in years to come.

“...the first woman ever to win three Emmys in three consecutive years...”

A DECADE OF

EXCELLENCE IIFC CELEBRATES ITS

10TH ANIVERSARY The Idyllwild International Festival of

Cinema began like all long running events, with an idea. That idea was born out of a trip to the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 by future IIFC director Stephen Savage. That year, Savage’s movie “Cosmic Radio” was a special invited film through the Sundance Institute’s Native Film Studies Department, at that time headed up by one of the stars of “Cosmic”, Wes Studi. While in Park City, Savage was struck by the fact that, what was once a quiet little town, had now become a world-renowned destination spot due in large part to the impact Sundance had made on the vergining Independent Film community. Savage observed the amount of money that was flowing through Park City via filmmakers from around the globe and decided that those same economic possibilities might exist for his own home town of Idyllwild, California. So after returning to California, and setting

meetings with the Idyllwild town council and other village officials, a plan was laid out to give it a go. That all culminated in what became the first IIFC. After launching the first festival with a good deal of success, Savage realized he would need someone who actually knew how to run a business (well aware that that is NOT his forte). He called up his friend, film and music video producer Trinity Houston, to see if she might have some ideas. And of course, she did. And by the 2nd year with Trinity on board, IIFC was on its way to becoming what LA Weekly called “A Mini Sundance” and indiefilm.com touted as “The Greatest Little Film Festival On Earth.” Now as the festival moves into its 10th season, growing larger and more renowned with each year, and on the verge of garnering a highly prized Oscar© accreditation, we at IIFC can look back with pride at some of our proudest moments.

THE IIFC GRAND JURY One of the brightest feathers in the IIFC cap is our much written about Grand Jury, which is not only impressive but also unprecedented for a festival of this size. With the tragic loss of our dear friend Kristoff St. John, we find ourselves even more grateful to these amazing people who help to make us shine. Beginning with the beautiful and talented Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated actress Anne Archer, who came to us through our friends and sponsors, Golden Era Studios, Anne heads up the grand jury with the same dedication with which she takes on a movie role. She is all in, helping to make us even more credible with her very presence as part of our team.

THE IDY AWARDS The pride and joy of our festival are the IDY awards and the ceremony that plays host to them. The Idy’s, including the Mary Austin Women In Independent Film Awards, has become a very prestigious and sought after prize on the film festival circuit, and we are honored by all who have proudly taken home one of our trophies. Some of the past Idy winners include:

IIFC is also proud to count as one of our jury members songwriter, composer, and drummer for the one and only Queen, Mr. Roger Taylor. Roger’s friendship with IIFC started a few years back when a film for which he composed the score entitled “Solitary” won a few top honors at the festival. Rogers talented wife, Sarina Taylor, took home the best actress trophy for her work on the film, and she was so impressed with Idyllwild and the festival that she and Roger became strong supporters, culminating in Roger’s becoming one of our distinguished grand jury members. And beginning this year, a trophy for Best Soundtrack will be given out as the Roger Taylor Award. Juan Ruiz Anchia is one of Hollywood’s best known and most respected cinematographers. His work on such iconic films as “GlenGarry, Glen Ross”, “At Close Range”, “Spartan”, and HBO’s “Phil Spector”, to name but a few, has made Juan one of the most sought after DPs in the business. IIFC’s cinematography awards are named for him. Our great friend, Native American actress and activist Irene Bedard, best known as the voice of Disney’s “Pocahontas” as well her vast TV and film resume, has been a Grand Jury member since year one of IIFC, and her tireless efforts to help move the festival into greater heights, and well as her duties as an official ambassador for indigenous peoples to the United Nations, makes Irene a true superstar in anyone’s book. Wolfgang Bodison is an actor and teacher with one very impressive resume. From his iconic role as Lance Corporal Dawson in the classic film “A Few Good Men”, through to his many television appearances on some of the best series of the past twenty years, Wolfgang has been on board at IIFC from near the beginning. As if all of that weren’t enough, he also heads up the Playhouse West Film Festival and is also one of that well-known school’s top acting teachers. In 2018, IIFC was honored to have actress Erika Christensen (“Traffic”, “Parenthood”) take a seat on our grand jury, lending us not only her great smile and energy but also her love of film and acting in general. Erika is a great addition to our team.

Gabriel Byrne Anne Archer Eric Roberts Francis Fisher Doris Roberts

Sharon Lawrence Elaine Hendrix Melissa Leo And Nancy Allen Among many others.

The Idy Awards are a true celebration of independent film and television, and we at IIFC are excited to hand out this year's trophies to the amazing filmmaking class of 2019. IIFC would also like to acknowledge some of our distinguished Idyllwild residents who year after year make our festival the great event that it is: Mary Austin Foundation Chair Doug Austin Laurie and Daryl Gillett at the Creekstone Inn The County of Riverside Town Hall The Riverside County Film Commission Frank Ferro at Idyllwild Brew Pub and Ferro Restaurant Martina Webster The Ramona Bowl Mike Croke and The Baylor Group, Inc. Shane, Ashley and Christina at The Rustic Theatre Golden Era Productions The Idyllwild Public Library Our Incredible IIFC Volunteers And the entire town of Idyllwild who make the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema something very special. We couldn’t do it without you. And above all, we would like to raise a glass to our honored filmmakers, without whom the past 10 years would not have been possible. Thank You, Stephen Savage “Director” Trinity Houston “Executive Producer” Andrea Charles “Artists Liaison and Children’s Festival Director”

THE RIVERSIDE COUNTY FILM COMMISSION Riverside County has a long and rich movie-making history. From the silent era, when the likes of Mary Pickford and Tom Mix utilized the county’s vast mountain and desert terrains for their groundbreaking film work, to our own modern era, with renowned filmmakers like Albert Brooks and Randall Wallace bringing production of large studio films to the area, Riverside County has been a favorite filming local for movie makers of all genres. In 2015, the Riverside County Film Commission was put into place, creating a cohesive, filmmaker friendly environment for anyone looking to produce movies in the area. With a revised film ordinance under its arm, RCFC made it possible to film on County-owned properties and roads, with no location or film permit fees, and with the hands-on support of real people looking out for the artists - not just governing agents with hands out to collect fees. The Riverside County Film Commission was established by the Riverside County Economic Development Agency (EDA). The Film Commission was developed to promote filming in the county. With new incentives, and with actual faces and voices in place to reassure filmmakers they had solid support while filming in Riverside County, RCFC quickly proved itself a valuable partner in the filmmaking process.

As the Regional Film Partner to the California Film Commission, the RCFC today makes things much easier for film production to take place in the county and eases many of the outside burdens faced by producers while creating their work. In other words, it’s much more about time spent on art, and much less spent on red tape. With 7,000 sq miles and 28 cities, encompassing everything from wine country locations, forested mountains, and lakes, Victorian and mid-century homes, to vacant iron mines and desert vistas, Riverside County inspires movie makers like few other areas can. And with inspiration as a calling card, Riverside County is quickly becoming the place to film outside of Los Angeles. From start to finish, the Riverside County Film Commission makes the success of your film production a priority, so you can concentrate on what’s most important... shooting your movie. A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary Foundation is a family run, non-profit organization that offers a forever home to rescued and abandoned farm animals. Residing in the beautiful Cowichan Valley in Duncan British Columbia, the Foundation currently has more than 30 animals in its care. Founded in September 2017, its goal was to meet an overwhelming demand for the care and shelter of rescued farm animals, and is the second such official farm sanctuary on Vancouver Island. Currently, it is home to numerous pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs, and will soon be be expanding its animal family in the near future to include cows, horses, sheep, donkeys and turkeys. Its mission is “to provide the animals in its care with a good quality of life and a loving home” and it strives to meet this endeavor each and every day. The facility is volunteer run and relies on donations from the public to meet the everyday needs of its animal residents. All animals are provided with excellent medical care, high quality food and proper shelter, along with an over-abundance of love and affection. The majority of the residing animals are at the facility due to neglect, behavioral issues or abandonment. Every animal that comes to them stays for life with a promise of stability, safety, quality care and an opportunity to live out their natural life with an adopted, loving family.

A Home for Hooves prides itself with its dedication to the education of the public regarding the benefits of a vegan lifestyle, the treatment of animals in the food industry and the myth perpetuated about the micro/mini pig breed. The Foundation’s success in rehabilitating animals with health or behavioral issues has resulted in these animals being able to thrive and live their best life. Animals that are morbidly obese, crippled, timid or aggressive have seen their health restored due to the efforts of the Foundation’s dedicated staff. In the days ahead, the Sanctuary plans to rescue more and more animals as its infrastructure permits. All funds raised go directly toward the care of animals and subsequent expansion projects. Its enthusiastic staff of volunteers are helping to grow the Sanctuary into a place for people to visit who will then be inspired to improve the welfare of animals on our planet.

IIFC AND “RAMONA” CALIFORNIA’S OFFICIAL STATE PLAY

THE NEAR-CENTURY-OLD SHOW GETS A MODERN UPGRADE WITH A NEW SCRIPT BY STEPHEN SAVAGE Back in the 1920s, “Ramona”, the 1883 novel by Native American activist and author Helen Hunt Jackson, was getting a resurgence of popularity. The romantic story of old California, which had been an instant hit upon its original publication, was now having new life breathed into its lungs by a brand new entertainment medium, Motion Pictures. A short subject film based on the novel, starring Mary Pickford and directed by D.W. Griffith was a big hit when it was released by the Biograph Company in 1910, and in the following years, the story was retold by no fewer than 4 major studios of the silent era, including the epic 1928 United Artist version starring Vanessa Del Rio. It wasn’t long before the small community of Hemet, California took notice. Local leaders came to the conclusion that a staged version of this story of star crossed lovers and the treatment of California’s native peoples in the mid 19th century might be a great source of tourism dollars. Thus Ramona, California’s Official State Play, was born. Originally penned by stage director and playwright Garnet Holme, the show had its first season in 1923, with the play performed among the rocks and hills of a natural amphitheater just east of the town of Hemet, with audience members sitting on whatever boulder or stretch of grass that could be found. The play, like the novel, was an instant success. After a time, the show was attracting so many people each spring it was decided that a real home was needed for the yearly performances. Seats were added, along with an actual hacienda and Indian village, and what would soon become California’s Official Stage Play found its stride. For decades, the play enjoyed packed houses and audiences from around the world, and young actresses campaigned hard to play the title character of Ramona. Two of note who won the coveted role were Raquel Welch and Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema grand jury member Anne

Archer. Alas, the “Old Girl” (as Ramona supporters affectionately called the play) seemed to have run its course after a time. Smartphones, x-box, and iPads held more allure for 21st-century audiences than a decades-old melodrama. Audience numbers shrank to a mere shadow of Ramona’s glory days, and a move toward a more modern version was planned. In stepped international award-winning director and screenwriter Stephen Savage. After a few meetings in early 2014 with the Ramona board of directors and then president and vice president Lori Van Arsdale and Tami Wilhelm, who knew Savage’s film work and his attachment to nearby Idyllwild, a commission was put forth. And before he knew it, Savage found himself reading the novel over and over again until he felt he knew the story well enough to sit down and write. The “New Ramona” had its first performances in the spring of 2015, and like the novel, the silent films, and the original play, Savage’s version, under the leadership of the visionary stage director Dennis Anderson, was a hit. The new script attracted a new audience, and after four seasons, The Old Girl is back on her feet and dancing like she did back in the day. As the play approaches its 100th year in 2023, she does so with energy to burn. With a cast of hundreds, dozens of real horses, Native American and Spanish singers and dancers, gunfights and romance to rival any Hollywood movie from the Golden Age, and the World Famous Ramona Cowboys, Ramona now promises another hundred years of fun and excitement. And this year, 2019, some of the Ramona cast, lead by singer Linda Greilich and the generational Arias Troubadours, will perform the opening for the 10th annual IIFC Idy Awards. IIFC is proud to present these amazing performers, and equally proud of our association with the longest continuously running play in North America: Ramona!
