01 CAVITY FOR SOUND —— Qing qiang Art Museum Location: Xi'an, China Building area: 5000 m2 Design date: 2018, 10 5th year Design Studio Tutor: Li Wenli Individual Work Qing qiang, one of the most archaic Chinese opera art originated in Xi'an, is now decaying. This work is designed to preserve and carry these art forward. The identical cavity structure, which refers to the traditional cave dwelling in Shaanxi, can echo and augment the sound of opera inside. The museum shows a sequence of spaces which guide the visitors get closer and closer to the performance stage.


01 Introduction Served as an ancient type of art in Xi'an, Qing Qiang opera is well known for its high volume and easy-to-recognize tone. I make this unique characteristic a clue of the museum. Visitors can hear the Qing Qiang opera in every exhibition hall. Walking gradually closer to the main stage, visitors will realize the real charm of Qing Qiang.

02 Form By combining the traditional museum streamline with the spectator seats in drama stage, visitors are able to enjoy the opera all the time while their visiting in the gallery.

03 Process The streamline is designed only can hear the opera first. With the visitors stepping forward, they get closer to the main stage.

05 Model Study The combination of different sizes of cavities makes the space types polytropic. 3D-Modeling helps to decide whether the scale of the space is suitable for visitors' activities.


06 Section Study The design is developed from putting cavities in a box. I use sections to study the relationship between different scales of cavities.

08 Section Model Through studying section model I define spaces as two type: the cavity as invert space and plane floor as outer space. Functions are divided in these two type of space.

09 Development of the design

The design is developed from a box according to the site.

Several void cavities are placed inside the box to create heterogeneous spaces.

In order to distinguish the main gallery, middle cavities are stretched.

To make the visiting flow continuous, four cavities are joined into two.

The two biggest cavities serve as the main gallery hall and main stage. Slopes are set for viewing inside the cavities.

The plane area is divided into two parts: the function part for offices and the part free for different activities.

Small-scale cavities are placed at the edge of the building for entrance and daylighting.

At last, the elevator and the toilet are designed as two columns from top to the bottom.

Sectio The museum is divided into two sorts of spaces, all of the function sections share the main gallery which contains a main stage for Qing Qiang performance. While the s t r u c t u re o f c av i t y c a n b e perfectly combined with some of the functions like resting bench or skylight.

02 FLOATING PUZZLE —— An on-water community design Location: Lagos, Nigeria Building area: 8034 ㎡ Design date: 2018, 3 Competition Tutor: Shi yuan, Li Ce Individual Work There are over 100,000 people living in stilted buildings of Makoko, a district located in the heartland of Lagos Lagoon. However, people there have no road, no land or basic installation to support their poor life. To solve this problem in attempt, a floating module that can be combined into different functions such as market, residence or clinic is designed. Modulization makes this work easy to construct, transport and provide possibilities to dwellers: they can change the forms by themselves. While a trangle shape module is an ideal shape to float for its low center of gravity and outstanding stability.

01 Site Overview Site located besides a coastline of Makoko, where lives more than 100,000 dwellers. There is no pubilic activity space on the site. Resident there can only use their humble outdoor balcony or their boats to carry out activities. While there are only very few public service in the site, no medical facilities and only poor housing in the community. How to solve these problem in an architectural way? The way they live may leave me a chance: the floating architecture.

02 Solution In attempt to solve the existing problem, I reconsidered the form of achitecture in four ways: Mobility, Flotation, Stability, and Functions. Both of these factors are vital for a on-water architecture.

I Mobility The original fixed settlement was not movable, and the function of the old house was also very simple. The addition of mobility allows new functions to be added, and people can change the form of the house according to their needs

The original house was deeply rooted in the soil at the bottom of the water, and over time, the erosion of the wooden pillars would lead to a decline in the stability of the house. Adding floatation to the design makes the house more resistant to wind and waves and easier to move around.

In order to reduce the center of gravity of the original house and increase its ability to withstand wind and waves, the roof is lowered (the center of gravity of the triangle is the lowest).

The original slum only had the func tion of living, and the infrastructure was extremely scarce. The nearest medical facility is 10 k i l o m e te r s away, a n d t h e o n l y primary school here was destroyed in a storm. I hope to complete these functions in the design.

04 Unit Study Starting from the most basic element: single unit, wall and connection, I can get the open, semi-open and private space types through the combination and change of typology, and then get the space with four functional types of medical treatment, residential area, market and education.

05 Modular Construction System This modular structure system is designed easy to assembly inorder to decrease the construction budget which is beneficial to both developer or resident. In this case the unit can be constructed or dismantled quickly and functions can be re-adapt as space or users are changed.

06 Functional Variability The module is designed as changeable and focus on the customize of every space. For example, dwellers can remove all the walls between rooms so that they can have a space big enough to hold their anniversary celebration.

Large points of sale in the market can be easily dismantled by the wall to change the size of the market. If there are a large number of merchants who need to sell goods, then large, wall-less Spaces are suitable for them. If only a small number of merchants need to sell goods, then the type of small space segmentation is more suitable for them.

S i m i l a r l y, i n t h e e d u c a t i o n function, large Spaces can be used for large libraries by disassembling the wall stroke, while small rooms formed by walls can be installed to form classrooms or individual reading rooms according to the requirements. Large Spaces can also be used as playgrounds when they are not needed to make up for the inadequacy of local people's land sports.

07 Variation of Overall Form In the initial design, there may be only one core unit. With the change of time and the spontaneous t ra n s fo r m at i o n o f u s e r s, i t w i l l gradually become more complex and community-oriented, and finally form a multi-functional and constantly changing community

03 BALANCE —— Student center design based on a given design method: Balance Location: Xi'an, China Building area: 1575 ㎥ Design date: 2017,12 4th year Design Studio Tutor: Wu Rui Individual Work This student center is designed under a special rule: The ratio of volume and void should be about 1:1. In order to meet this goal, I divide a square into 5*5 and set a figure- and-ground relationship to them. By overlaying figure to ground, I reach a condition of space that not only the volume-void-ratio of plan is 1:1 but also that of section. After analysing the chosen site I confirm a final prototype, the volume part and void part in the student center are homogenous and the designed space creates different possibilities for activities in the building.

There are thousands of possibilities to create a space with the rule of overlaying figure to ground, all of them have a same charateristic: the spaces are homogenious.

Doing figure and ground research helps me to define how different kinds of ground influent the whole space.

02 Site Analyzing How to confirm a final form of the figure-and-ground? I find the answer in the site: In order not to block the road between two teaching building, there should be empty in the middle(image 2). To resist the noise from parking lot and the sports court, two blocks should be set to block the noise(image 3), to reinforce the block, two underground-courtyards are placed(image 4). Finally, protential structure walls are marked out for further design(image 6).

04 Construction System The whole structure system adopts concrete bearing wall and steel box structure. The tank itself is a load-bearing system, which is convenient to assemble and disassemble.

04 Mathematical Nature —— Alustruction Design & Construction Location: Shanghai, China Building area: 10 ㎥ Design date: 2018,9 Outdoor Construction Project Tutor: Cai Chengzhi, Li Ce Group Work(With Xu Weikun, Wan Yihan, Zhou Jier, Lv Xinyu, Li Ziqi) Role in Team: Conceptual design, Coding, Detail design, Modeling, Construction, Diagram drawing. Since the industrial revolution, from crystal palace in Paxton to the national library of Paris in La Bruster,metallic materials have emerged in a large area in the building,which has become a crucial element to create a spatial atomosphere. At the same time, compression, tension, bending, drilling, polishing, riveting, welding, bolting and other processing and connection technology has greatly expanded the possibility of metal materials in the form. The project uses metal as a holding member for the original concrete, with the aim of correcting the skew error during concrete pouring and decorating the concrete. In the design and research process, we analyzed and screened a large number of materials, and carried out a lot of thinking and practice on the connection method of metal components and concrete.


01 Introduction The project was formerly a large concrete and steel model built in 2017. Several parts of the model can be spliced together to explore the plasticity of 3D concrete, the relationship between body scale and furniture, the way in which molds are made, and the techniques used to treat concrete. On this basis, our project will offset the visual deviation caused by the concrete pouring error by adding metal components behind the existing concrete volume, and continue to explore the characteristics of the metal material and the docking of the parameterization algorithm and the actual construction.

Concrete has the characteristics of abundant raw materials, low price and simple production technology. At the same time, concrete also has the characteristics of high compressive strength, good durability and wide range of strength grade.

Another important characteristic of aluminium is its low density, 2.70g/ cm3. Aluminium is a relatively soft, durable, lightweight, ductile, and malleable with appearance ranging from silvery to dull gray, dejpending on the surface roughness.


03 Sketch Study Once the material properties have been determined, we have tried and studied the possible solutions by way of a sketch, finally obtained a solution appropriate to the original model and capable of solving the above-mentioned problems.

Since we want to make our results ultimately not visually conflict with concrete materials, we finally choose The brushed aluminum plate used in the daytime reflects the color very similar to the original concrete, and in the process of texture design, we analyze and study the natural texture of various materials, and finally the natural crack of the concrete and the volcanic rock in the site. The holes in the tiles have inspired us, and the density and arrangement of the holes is inspired by the rusting texture of the metal surface. The width of concrete cracks is similar, and the general direction of each crack is similar to that of shape and lightning. There will be no circular cracks in the wood, and there will be no small cracks caused by dry cracking of the soil (thin ends are thicker and the middle part is thicker). In the case of holes, the use of holes that combine the rusting of the metal surface and the natural hole shape of the rock surface (also similar to the shape of the concrete coarse aggregate) are used. We abstracted and extracted the results of erosion caused by several natural states, and finally used parametric design software (including grasshopper and python) to imitate their generation logic. Then, we will be similar to the plane at first. The combination of the design combines to create our own natural cracks and holes.

In pervious bersion, we used Voronoi diagram to simulate the texture from a cast concrete surface, but the effect was too regular and artificial.

On that account, we optimized the pattern through editing a Python script in Rhino, in order to make it look more nature.

We have adopted a double-layer metal plate design, which not only ensures the richness of the texture, but also hides the internal light source and some connecting members for construction. In the process of designing the holes, we have adjusted the inner opening and the outer layer to be smaller, which allows the light to pass over the inner aluminum plate more and more from the well-designed holes on the outer aluminum plate. It’s revealed that this makes our plan look very good at night. In the connection method, we have chosen to fold the metal or fold the metal multiple times, which not only ensures that the metal plate does not produce bridge deformation, but also ensures that the occlusion of the inner structure maintains the overall aesthetics.

In recent decades, the diseases caused by environmental deterioration continue to challenge the medical industry, the uncontrollable deterioration of the environment means that the future medical industrial will continuously face the challenge. We realize that we cannot change the whole environment, so we had the concept to create a smaller, individual environment. Our work uses science and technology to compensate for the environment and proposes a new medical model: vitual environment treatment and maintainance to prevent and cure the diseases caused by the environment.
