Lloyd Davies’ Stunning 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Story and photos by Russell Purcell

here are only a handful of automobiles that have ever attained iconic status, but it would be hard to argue against placing this level of praise on the Chevrolet Bel Air. General Motors produced eight generations of this full-sized automobile between 1950 and 1981. When the car was first introduced, only the two-door hardtops in the Chevrolet model range were designated with the Bel Air name, but by 1953, the decision makers at Chevrolet decided to use Bel Air as the designation for a premium level of trim applied across a number of body styles. Sales were strong , but so was the threat from the competition, so the second-generation Bel Air arrived for 1955 with a host of styling revisions, including crisp new lines and a bold, egg-crate grille that was apparently inspired from those on Ferraris of the period. This European-influenced design was replaced the following year with a more traditional full-width grille. Chevrolet referred to the 1955 Bel Air as the “Hot One in its advertising campaign for the now-iconic car that many regard as the model that helped the company shed the perception its designs were too conservative and, in fact, rather boring. The new car was more bold and youthful than previous Chevrolet products and came equipped with additional features such as full carpeting, chrome headliner bands, chrome front fender spears, stainless steel window mouldings, distinctive badging and full wheel MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018

covers. There was also an incredible palette of 14 solid and 23 two-tone colour combinations to choose from, allowing buyers to truly express their individual style. The Generation Two cars also benefited from an increase in power. The option of a 265-cubic-inch V8 engine became available in late 1954. This small-block V8 featured a modern shortstroke design that employed high-compression and overhead valves, and was rated at 165 horsepower in base trim. This engine remained in production in various forms and displacements for decades following its introduction. Our feature car is the pride and joy of lifelong Mission, B.C., resident and Chevrolet fanatic Lloyd Davies. Lloyd bought his

“I told him that rather than looking for a project car, he should find a turn-key one and just drive it away. That way he could enjoy it immediately, rather than worrying about finding the time, parts and resources needed to complete a project.” While not a perfect, all-stock, numbers matching example, the attractive blue-and-silver hardtop time machine that eventually rolled into Lloyd’s garage was in really good condition. When it left the factory it was equipped with a 265-cubic-inch V8 engine and a Synchro-Mesh, three-speed manual transmission, but the previous owner had made some changes to enhance the driving experience. The engine was swapped out for a 350-cubic-inch V8 that pro1955 Bel Air several years ago after looking at a number of duces about 300 horsepower, the gearbox was upgraded to a examples. this one must bring back some pretty special memories for him.” Lloyd’s 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air may not be 100 percent period correct, but it was bought to drive and enjoy rather than serve as a museum piece. The car is an older restoration, as evidenced by the wear and tear and the presence of a few nicks and scratches, but it has proven reliable and well sorted. “It is far from original,” Dean admitted, “but it is tastefully done. Some of the design choices such as the diamond-tuft interior and non-factory paint lend a little hot-rod flair to the car that we may one day seek to correct if we choose to do a complete restoration on it, but I already have several projects on the go. “Besides, for now my dad is really enjoying driving the car, and that is what it’s all about.” Driving Impressions The 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air features a spacious passenger cabin and the cockpit is roomy enough to accommodate even the largest of drivers. Visibility is excellent because of the high seating position and acres of window glass, although the long hood and tall fenders make it difficult to see what is immediately in front of the car. pect from a car of this era. In short, the driver is still in charge and expected to do most of the work in cars from the 1950s, so focus is key, as is reading the car’s movements through the steering wheel and the driver ’s seat and being prepared to make the necessary corrections with the controls. But that is what makes older vehicles so intriguing to own and drive. You become an integral part of the machine. General Motors ceased U.S. production of the Bel Air in 1975, but the company’s Canadian arm continued production for its home market until late 1981. design place all controls readily at hand, and all remain easy to see from behind the thin-rimmed steering wheel. The seats are more akin to the design of a classic sofa than what we now expect in a modern automobile. The absence of head restraints and shoulder belts quickly reminds you of how far we have come in passenger safety. But they are perfectly suited for stretching out and enjoying a frosty treat on a warm summer day. Acceleration is sufficient for a car of this size, weight and period, and body roll and overall handling dynamics are what you ex-

The horsepower race of the late‘50s and early-‘60s led to some horrific racing accidents and drew the attention of the United States Congress. Ford tried introducing optional Lifeguard Safety Features in 1957, but very few customers were inspired to pay extra for them. As the 1950s dawned, the government was ready to start making certain safety features standard on all automobiles. By 1963, automakers were feeling heavy pressure to get out of racing and in mid-1963, General Motors ordered all of its

To do an end-run around this infamous “performance ban,” Chevrolet used Californian Bill Thomas to funnel parts to the racing community. The Stephani Brothers were wise enough to tie-in with Thomas and began offering what they promoted as “Super Car Conversions” in 1966. Bill Thomas Race Cars supplied Nickey with technical help, which led to Nickey building the first ’67 Camaro with a 427-cid V8. Eventually, Super Car Conversions in three different stages of tune, each more powerful than the last, were offered. They were called Stage I, Stage II and Stage III. Nickey Chevrolet’s Service Department did many hot rod-style conversions and the parts department—which stayed open late on weekends for drag racers—specialized in selling factory go-fast hardware. The red ’67 Camaro is a Nickey Vintage Continuation car built by Stefano Bimbi and his crew at Nickey Performance in St. Charles, Illinois. Chevrolet specialized in shoe-horning big-block V8s into cars never meant to have them and/or selling high-performance parts to muscle car fanatics and hot rodders. Don Swiatek was the Nickey dealership’s High-Performance Parts Manager, and he and his crew would do it all. They could build up straight-axle Tri-Five Chevys for heavy-duty dragging or drop a 427cid Turbo-Jet V8 in a Nova or Camaro. Even legendary Chevrolet writer Doug Marion once worked at Nickey Chevrolet. Right after Stefano Bimbi bought the Nickey name, Don Swiatek and Ronnie Kaplan helped on projects and did consulting at his facility in St. Charles, Ill. Chevrolet offered the largest inventory of genuine Chevrolet highperformance parts available anywhere.” The Stephani family owned Nickey until 1973. It was then sold to become Keystone Chevrolet. It is believed that the last Nickey Super Car Conversion was performed on an early 1974 Camaro that’s now in a private museum along with other significant Nickey Super Cars.

This blue Gen 6 Camaro is the serial number 0001 convertible. It cranks out 800 hp on E85. This car ran a 10”20 quarter mile with a 134-mph terminal speed at Union Grove Dragway and was driven both to and from the dragstrip on the streets.

This yellow car was ordered by a man who read about Nickey’s Stage III L88 Nova conversion in a 1973 Hot Rod article. The car was delivered in November 1973 and quickly Nickey-ized. By then, the high-performance era of the late-‘50s and early ‘70s was winding to a close due to high insurance rates and performancerobbing government regulations. There was nothing to do but to close the shop down. Bimbi was in the right place at the right time when he attended the Chevy Vettefest in Chicago in 2002. While he was there, he learned that the rights to the Nickey name might be available. Not long thereafter, Bimbi bought the rights and mapped out a plan to open his new “Supercar Headquarters” in St. Charles, Ill. “Nickey is going to cover all of the bases,” Bimbi said. “We will build modern continuation Super Cars that you can’t get from the factory, as well as vintage continuation cars. We’ll also sell high-performance parts, hot rod stuff and official Nickey memorabilia and apparel. And, for the record, we have built several Nickey Super Camaros for customers in Canada.”

Pontiac GTO Judge built for all-out racing featured a Butler engine.

Performance & Racing Industry Trade Show Hits 30 Story and photos by John Gunnell

T

he Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show has been held in different cities over the years, but after the Specialty Vehicle Market Assoc. (SEMA) purchased PRI in 2012, it settled in Indianapolis. There’s a good reason for that—it’s in the shadow of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hallowed ground for circle racing enthusiasts. And if you like going fast in a straight line, drag master John Force has a massive facility in nearby Brownsburg. This year’s show dates were Dec 7-9. John Force went back to Chevy last year and runs this bow-tie funny car.

The IMS plays a big role in the show each year, and this time it brought out four of A.J. Foyt’s historical Indy cars to honour his racing achievements. Also included was a 159-cid Foyt-Ford engine of the 1969-1977 era. While the show is much ado about auto racing, it also includes cars and trucks that can turn a muscle car fanatic on. A special feature of the 2017 event was a “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow” engine-building competition featuring 50 teams vying for a Dual National Championship. The student teams were fresh from SEMA. Team Fel-Pro took the national championship. Three seconds separated the first- and second-place teams and just 17 seconds were between first and third. In the end, Team Fel-Pro from Tulsa Technology Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, came out on top with an average time of 17:06. Each student earned scholarship opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 from Ohio Technical College, School of Automotive Machinists & Technology, and Universal Technical Institute. 26 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018

Other PRI activities included an Advanced Engineering Technology Conference, an International Council of Motor Sports Sciences Congress, a Race Track Business Conference, a Grand Opening Breakfast and an Exhibitor Party at Forrest Lucas’ nearby automotive-themed football stadium. There were approximately 60 seminars on topics ranging from Engine Coating Myths to Trust the Pros: Welding Tips from Experts. One of the most active and exciting areas of the giant show is “Machinery Row” where visitors can watch engine cylinder heads and engine blocks being made with CNC machines. There were hundreds of other types of products on display in the Featured Products Showcase ranging from parts, lubricants and shop furniture to tools, specialized insurance, electronics and car-hauling trailers. Some 2,000 exhibitors set up booths inside the giant convention center and the trailers are parked outside on adjoining streets.

CHEVELLE EXHAUST INSTALLATION

hen we originally had the engine built for our ’68 Chevelle project, we were given the opportunity to test it out on a dynamometer where it put up some power numbers that were actually more than we expected. During the experience, we were very impressed with the non-restricted sound of the motor and decided that when it came time to actually drive the car, we wanted to do everything we could to replicate the sound we heard that day. The best way to do this was to seek out a performance exhaust system that would not only provide us with that deep growl we were after, but also one that would even improve both horsepower and torque.

1. The MagnaFlow 3-in., crossmember-back dual exhaust system and all hardware laid out and ready to go. manufacturers in North America and most definitely live up to the company slogan, which is; ‘Quality. Power. Sound.’ Once we reached out, we were thrilled to learn that MagnaFlow were willing to donate exactly what we were looking for - a stainless steel, 3-in., crossmember-back dual exhaust system made specifically for our Chevelle that would provide the smooth and deep tone we desired.

From there it was over to Stefen at M-Tech Automotive in Port Coquitlam, B.C., who have specialized in building and installing exhaust systems for more than 20 years, for the installation. In just At or near the top of our wish list was a MagnaFlow exhaust system, a few short hours, and with only a few minor adjustments necessary, given that they are currently one of the top aftermarket exhaust our system was mounted on the car and ready to go. 2. For starters, if you have an existing exhaust system installed, remove before you begin.

4. MagnaFlow recommends making the existing hole for the muffler hangers bigger to accommodate the new set-up.

3. System is mocked up in place to check hanger locations and to ensure everything fits the way it should. 34 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018

5. A slight modification had to be made in order to fit the system around our aftermarket crossmember.

6. Our crossmember-back system did not include the downpipes to connect to the headers.

7. M-Tech fabricated downpipes for the car. Finished product seen here.

8. Once the fitment of the downpipes was double- and triple-checked, the header flanges were welded on to the downpipes which were then TIG welded to the front of the MagnaFlow system. FEB/MAR 2018 MUSCLE CAR Plus MAGAZINE 35

10. Time to start securing all hanger locations and fasteners.

9. New pieces are in place and everything is fitting like it should.

11. The finished product. Big thanks again to both MagnaFlow and M-Tech automotive.

Red Line Synthetic Oil is now offering its Assembly Lube in a new liquid formula, a new, convenient version of the chemistry used in its popular paste. The lube prevents metal contact and wear before adequate lubrication can be supplied, and unlike some other assembly lubes, the product will not plug filters after initial engine start-up. The lube provides 3x greater film strength than conventional black Molybdenum Disulfide greases, and also is an excellent rust and corrosion inhibitor that allows for long-term storage of parts and internal engine components. Additionally, the product is not made for use on exhaust bolts or other fasteners associated with high temperature, and is recommended and used by top camshaft and drivetrain manufacturers. READERS RIDES 1960 Chevrolet Impala Coupe

Grant Vessey of Calgary, Alberta has owned his 1960 Chevrolet Impala Coupe for the last 22 years, and it underwent a full restoration back in 2013. Grant took the Impala to a friend’s shop where they spent 1,100 hours upgrading and repairing the car that now features a FAST fuel-injected, 450-horsepower, beautifully detailed 383 Stroker engine paired to a 700R4 transmission with a 9-in. Ford rear end with 3.75 gears. During the restoration, Grant also put in power windows and door locks, an Ididit steering column with cruise control, RideTech coilover suspension, and Wilwood disc brakes. The exterior features House of Kolor Seabreeze Green with the roof and insert done in Grecian Green. Grant regularly drives to and attends shows in the Impala and even won 1st place in its class at the 2015 Calgary World of Wheels show.

1979 Chevrolet Malibu Paul Kennedy has owned his 1979 Chevrolet Malibu since 1998, and purchased it from the original, ‘little old lady’ owner with only 48,000 km on the odometer. After a couple of years, Paul installed a 4-bolt main 355 V8 engine, a 1991 T5 transmission and a 3.73 Eaton posi differential. In 2010, the engine received new Dart Iron Eagle heads, a new camshaft, lifters and roller tipped rockers. Before moving out East, Paul allowed the Drag Race Team Members from Terry Fox Secondary in Port Coquitlam, B.C. to drive the car at the local drag strip with the original V6 engine, where it went down the track in 17 seconds at about 90 km/h. Last summer Paul tackled the 3,900 km round trip from his home to the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton, New Brunswick where it achieved a respectable 20 mpg.
