Moving objects inspired by nature Creating a mechanism that would imitate goose bumps. These are the bumps on a person’s skin which may involuntarily develop when a person is cold. The image is simple. An instrument with underneath a dish filled with water. when put in the cold. The water expands. The membrane above rises and the needles who are supporting the membrane rise to. They touch a latex membrane that makes the imitations of the goose bumps.

This was one of the first exercises in architecture class. The goal was to create space for sitting, standing and laying down. Three simple actions in one building... The concept was to make a thermal cure hospital with showers, sauna and a swimming pool. A box on the beach in the North of France. The box can be seen as a bunker of World War II, there are many of those in that area. You enter the structure when there is ebb tide. Going to the building is saying goodbye from the civilized world. The tide goes up and the cure-center is surrounded by water. The bottom is filled with algae and seawater and clears itself every tide: this is a thalasso-cure. The walls are made of concrete mixed with white sand of the beach so it go’s up in the landscape. The basic notion was time for the body and the mind. Nobody can interrupt. From ebb tide to tide it is yours...

The exercise was to create a building out of an image(below). The idea was inspired on a watch. A scheduled day keep the senior citizens on focus. The building is a round structure of concrete. Every level consist of a core with a bedroom, bathroom, elevator and kitchen. Going clockwise. From east to west, the citizens follow the sun. The building is a module and can be annexed to each other.

REANIMATE VS NEWBUILD

In a highly multicultural neighborhood there’s a enclave of buildings. Closed on all sides. A block with a concrete structure filled with bricks had to

transform in two different apartments: one for a male construction builder, the other one is for a mother and daughter. The building had to be open on the inside and closed on the outside. The plan follows the structure. An extension in the front contains the stairs and storeroom. The glass is printed with a brick motif. The colors of the bricks were copied so it looks in the daytime like a closed brick box. At night you can see the glass contrasting with the rest of the building.

The tower of books by the famous architect Henri Van De Velde made in 1933 is part of the university of Ghent. It is obviously filled with books with on top a belvedere. The tower was innovative because of a new competence of concrete spraying. Nowadays renovation is needed and also a dynamic impulse to save the grey icon. The tower supposed to be for students but they never actually enter the building nor do they enjoy the beautiful sight from the belvedere. Therefore the idea of a hostel in the tower. Erasmus students first night sleep in the heart of the city. The only staircase is a claustrophobic spiral staircase. Removing the stairs and putting instead a scaled version of the staircase. Perforating the tower on one side from top to bottom. A huge tube is placed with the sleeping compartments hanging in the free space of the stairs. Coloursparticles, inspired by the colorpalet of the paintings of Henry Van De Velde gives the tower to his new owner. Looking over the city in the tower of youth.

In the garden a new building is needed for exhibitions. Open space with diffuse light. The site of the formal school of Architecture is surrounded by a wall. On the site, in the front garden a annexation of the school had to be placed and has to contain exposition rooms and ateliers. The idea of deforming the rectangle square. Placing two boxes, one vertical, the other one horizontal placed. The entrance is on level -1 because of the few space. There is a bar with a terrace overlooking the garden. The walls are now torn down to connect with the environment. Only the pinnacles and gate are still standing. The building is connecting two streets together and opens up the space.

Allocate in a part of a existing building that is already transformed, a new function that relate to the new users and environment. The purpose of the exercise is to design a skin to divide the two functions. The ABC site is a creativity center for children. There are workshops to sharpen creativity. In a corner of the building there’s a refugee for battered wife’s with space for a swimming pool for relaxation, a bar, yoga classes, consultchambers. The skin consists of black basalt plates. Because of the history as for the calm effect. The basic idea for a refugee was simple: hearing children playing, laughing an shouting mothers would feel at home and open up. It would be a planet for women only, prohibited for men.

An old building complex yearning to collapse had to become a laboratory for creativity. In better days the complex used to be a weaving mill. The existing building had to become hollow and filled with scaffolds, the grid creates new spaces and could be transformed continuously. The skin of the building is just a protection shield for rain and wind. New materials like plexi-glass and rubber where used to create spaces in spaces.

REANIMATE VS NEWBUILD

The building is located middle in one of Ghent’s notorious party-street. The terms party and study doesn’t fit together. Therefore a huge glass wall was constructed around the building to enclave it. Inspired by the monastery De La Tourette of Le Corbusier the edifice is divided in different sound levels and follows also the same typology as the monastery. It has to guarantee quietness and enclosure. On top of the building the sleeping area is located. Where silence is needed. Study rooms from top to bottom with each different aspects of sound, light and material use fulfill the strenuous students.

50 apartment in the landmark of Ghent. The castle is a reconversion of how it supposed to be in the 15 century. With a romantic vision of a castle as a result. The gap of centuries is neglected. In the Industrial Revolution it used to be a cloth mill with smoke pipes in the tower and 50 families were living in houses bordered to the castle wall. To fill the century gap a huge formalistic industrial icon was placed in the shadow of the donjon. The 2 icons are connected, by body and mind. The building has to work as a machine with a lot of activities. So there is a continuous stream as well by day as by night. The building has a bridge, a connection with ‘Het Prinsenhof’ on the other side of the water, a market and launderette on the main floor. Communal kitchens, recreation and eating area’s in the upper floor of the building as well as in the castle.

2010-2011

A building with a view on the harbour had to be multi functional: a resting place for skippers with a bar, wash- and sleep accommodations and a radio center to interact with the ships. Further more it has to function as a meeting place for visitors in relation with the harbour. With an inverted image of a ship as inspiration the building in corten steel ,waste from the car factory close by, even has a jetty. Three parameters were used to design the building: the building is closed on the outside and open on the inside because of the busy street nearby, inspired by a cloister the building has to be a refugee for the skippers. Secondly the building is in relation to the horizontal landscape and third. The building in a pavĂŠ shape is deformed in function of the view.
