... 2 miles from Chagford, a mile from the open moor, a thatched, detached, Grade I listed, medieval, granite Dartmoor longhouse, stone mullionwindowed, full of history. The Civil War was fought through it, Roundheads besieged in the kitchen. It is set in its own clean, private farmyard/courtyard of listed farm barns in front, with a large, mainly lawned garden (unfenced 5' drop, small children beware) behind with patio (table/chairs) and orchard (swing); 130 acres of farmland surround it.

Inside, full of character and complication. Granite porch; thick oak door to central passage, off which utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, fridge-freezer) with loo (washbasin); bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, washbasin). Living room with huge inglenook open fire, original bread oven, oak floors, beams, window seat, windows both sides of room, terrific ancient screen panelling, TV/DVD/video; ‘quiet room’ with leather chairs, jigsaw puzzle table; large farmhousey kitchen/dining room with brick floor, Aga (low heat May to October) plus electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, larder fridge, refectory table seating 10, window seat, stone mullion window. Two sets of steep, uneven stairs to four bedrooms, wooden-floored with rugs, white-walled: stairs from living room up to small corridor, 4'10" lintel into the master double (5’ bed, TV) with en suite bathroom (bath plus bath-shower, basin, bidet, separate loo), a twin, and family bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Also from the living room, a spiral staircase leads to a large twin (dual aspect), and a single (4'6" bed) that connects with the first twin room mentioned. A truly marvellous house.

... included is a cottage, just across the courtyard, with stable doors to kitchen/dining room (washer-drier), beamed living room (woodburner) with window seat and door to courtyard, and open tread stairs up to two bedrooms – a twin (washbasin), and a single (4'6" bed); bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, washbasin) and separate loo. Spring water. Arrival after 4pm.

… and 3 miles out of Chagford on the edge of the open moors is Kestor, a stunningly beautiful Dartmoor tor. Tucked into the side of its wooded Teign Gorge valley is an extension to a house with the most fabulous views out over this part of relatively lush moorland and meadows. Binoculars are essential to watch the sparrowhawks, buzzards, deer and many other wild creatures that can be observed from this spot. The open moor starts at the front gate, so cars can be left, walking boots donned and all day spent avoiding modern life. Approached along 30 yards of rough track, a gate opens to a footpath around the back of the house to your front door. Hall for coats/ boots; living room with great views, woodburner, TV/DVD and door to garden (wildlife pond) which surrounds the whole house; fitted kitchen/dining room (washing machine, fridge-freezer) with table/chairs and garden views; shower-room (suite) and double bedroom with pretty views. Family and friends are welcome to camp on site (extra), by arrangement. Spring water. No children under 7, except pre-crawling babies.
