Welcome – Croeso Rhondda Cynon Taf is a county of contrasts, which makes it an ideal destination for a full or short break in The Valleys, what we like to call the Heart and Soul of Wales. Nestled between the capital city of Wales – Cardiff, and the Brecon Beacons National Park, Rhondda Cynon Taf is a convenient location for a visit to the whole of South Wales. Once the industrial heartland of Great Britain, the valley communities of the County Borough are synonymous throughout the world for their rich heritage and culture of which its residents remain jusitifiably proud. Built on the massive growth of the coal industry during the 19th century, the precious "black gold" laid the foundations for the close-knit and yet diverse communities that exist today. Rhondda Cynon Taf has much to offer, with its stunning rolling hills, valleys, parklands and mountains creeping steadily towards the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. We have developed a number of trails which traverse the county, to suit all abilities and interests or for the more adventurous we have quad biking, gorge walking and much more. Why not play at one of the highest golf clubs in Britain in Penrhys, and take in the stunning landscape whilst enjoying your golf. Our theatres have a variety of exciting shows, which surprise, confound and delight their audiences. The following brochure has information about what Rhondda Cynon Taf has to offer you for your next break. We’ll certainly give you a warm welcome, so make Rhondda Cynon Taf your next destination.

Pontypridd Museum Pontypridd is the market town for the valleys of mid Glamorgan. Although it is not an old town it has an interesting history and many features which are valued by residents and visitors alike. The museum building was a Tabernacl chapel, built in 1861 to the design of its minister, Edward Roberts. Rebuilt in 1910 at the height of the town’s prosperity, the interior has an exceptionally fine ceiling and art nouveau stained glass. The woodwork is pine from Russia and Poland, a reminder of the international trade created by the coal

industry. The pipe organ is still used for concerts. There is a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and a variety of temporary exhibitions. The museum also has a Tourist Information Centre. Open Mon.- Sat. 10.00-5.00. Pontypridd Museum, Bridge Street, Pontypridd, CF37 4PE Tel 01443 490748 e-mail:

At Dare Valley Country Park, just outside the market town of Aberdare, you will find a beautiful, mature and varied landscape, full of wildlife, character and interest.

cutting machinery in Britain. In 1973, the 500 acre site became the first country park in Britain to have been created, largely, from the spoil tips of mineral exploitation.

This fine example of a former glaciated valley is the epitome of a changing landscape. The impressive rock face, at its head, is the haunt of peregrine falcons. Viewing platforms in woodland below provide a glimpse of another world, filled with birdsong and the rugged beauty of this natural amphitheatre.

This rich heritage is explained in the bright displays in the information centre where a bird viewing area shows live action on the busy bird table outside.

From its depths, Dare Valley once yielded the finest steam coal in Europe, and employed the first mechanised coal

The visitor centre complex also comprises a well-appointed, three-star hotel; a popular cafeteria noted for its freshlyprepared food and welcoming atmosphere; an exhibition gallery; two fully-equipped seminar rooms and a new reception area with conservatory lounge.

Culture Whether you are looking for a slice of great iconic Welsh culture, uproarious comedy, thought-provoking drama, cutting edge contemporary dance or traditional ballet, or exclusive gigs by some of the world’s finest musicians, the visitor to Rhondda Cynon Taf can experience this without leaving the county just by visiting any one of our three theatres. They are The Coliseum Theatre in Aberdare, the Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd and the Park & Dare Theatre in Treorci. Together they make up a Regional Performing Arts Centre (attracting funding from the Arts Council of Wales) and are the only local authority venues with production status. As co-producers Rhondda Cynon Taf Theatres

often work with our own home grown talent such as playwright Frank Vickery, and Welsh language entertainer Martyn Geraint with whom we co-produce a Welsh language pantomime. These productions are not only performed in our theatres but take the name of Rhondda Cynon Taf throughout Wales. Recent performers and productions at our theatres include Rhod Gilbert (four sold out shows in Spring 2010), Mal Pope’s “Cappuccino Girls” (Welsh premiere); Michael Schenker Group, Nick Lowe, Billy Bragg, Sean Lock, Mid Wales Opera, Mappa Mundi, Show of Hands, Chris Corcoran’s Committee Meeting, National Theatre Wales and National Dance Company of Wales.
