Record set:

21 alleged drug

offenders killed in one day

The alleged middleman in the P6.4-billion shabu shipment smuggled from China on Tuesday admitted knowing Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, but said that he was merely an “acquaintance.” “Nagkakilala kami way back in 2008 because I expanded my first branch of weighing scales in Davao. Acquaintance lang kasi hindi naman kami ganoon ka-close,” Kenneth Dong, the alleged middleman of Richard Tan, said during the blue ribbon committee probe. Tan is the owner of Hongfei Logistics, the alleged importer of the shabu shipment. During the hearing, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV showed photos of Dong with Paolo Duterte and Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, both sons of President Rodrigo Duterte. “Mahilig po ako mag-picture sa public. ‘Yan ang problema sa ‘kin kaya naiintriga ako,” Dong

explained. Dong said he was never a close friend of the Davao vice mayor despite the photos depicting such. Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella on Monday said the photos circulating on social media should be “vetted for accuracy.”

‘Just hearsay’ Paolo’s name was mentioned by Customs broker Mark Taguba in a House committee hearing last week. Taguba said Paolo was part of a group of individuals involved in the transactions of the Bureau of Customs in Davao City called the “Davao Group.” On Tuesday, Taguba said three other individuals he knew only by their nicknames are part of the group: “Tita Nanie,” “Jack,” and “Small.” Trillanes said “Small” refers to

the alias of a certain “Abellera,” a councilor of Davao City, and “part of the group” of Paolo Duterte. Asked about Paolo’s involvement, Taguba said: “It’s just hearsay.” Taguba said he has no personal knowledge about the vice mayor’s alleged involvement. “Sabi-sabi lang,” he told the committee. Deputy Commissioner Gerardo Gambala, for his part, said he does not have personal knowledge as to the supposed involvement of Paolo Duterte in the Davao Group. “I could hear noises, I could hear people’s names. I could just hear Davao Group but the people behind it, I don’t know that,” Gambala said. Senator Manny Pacquiao, a close ally of Duterte, reminded Taguba that he cannot just mention Paolo’s name without proof to back up the allegation. —KATHRINA CHARMAINE ALVAREZ, GMA News

methamphetamine, more popularly known in the Philippines as shabu, worth 500,000 pesos ($9,800). Cash and assorted drug paraphernalia were also recovered. Police records show since the crackdown started, 3,264 alleged drug offenders have been killed in gunbattles with law enforcers. More than 2,000 others died in drug-related homicides, including attacks by motorcycle-riding masked gunmen and other assaults. Human rights groups report a higher toll and demand an independent investigation into Duterte’s possible role in the violence.Philstar/AP

‘Middleman’ in P6.4-B shabu shipment says Paolo Duterte just an ‘acquaintance’

MANILA — Simultaneous antidrug operations in a northern province have left 21 alleged drug offenders dead, police said Tuesday. They called it the highest death toll in a single day since President Rodrigo Duterte launched his ‘war on drugs’ in July last year. Senior Superintendent Romeo M. Caramat Jr. said operations in various parts of Bulacan province in the past 24 hours left 21 dead and 64 others arrested. Police said the suspects had offered armed resistance against arresting officers. Caramat said police seized 21 firearms and more than 100 grams of

Armed Forces spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said the remaining Maute terrorists continue to pose a threat since they are still holding hostages in two barangays. “Based on the ground commander’s estimate, their number has decreased to less than 40. So maybe their forces have been reduced to between 20 and 40. The force is getting smaller,” Padilla said in a press briefing yesterday in Malacañang. “Their capacity to inflict harm, by the way, is still there because they still have arms, they still have adequate ammunition and they still continue to hold hostages. So that’s the compounding factor,” he added. Islamic State-inspired Maute group laid siege on the predominantly Muslim city last May 23, prompting President Duterte to declare martial law in the entire island of Mindanao. The military has stopped setting a timeline for the Marawi operations after repeatedly missing its selfimposed deadlines. Padilla said the clearing of Marawi City would not necessarily lead to the lifting of martial law in Mindanao. “Actually, don’t look at Marawi per se as the reason for

keeping martial law. You know this rebel group has a structure that is beyond Marawi. They have groups in other portions of Lanao, in Maguindanao, in Sulu archipelago,” the military spokesman said. “It does not mean to say that just because we have been able to address the security issue in Marawi, there is going to be a preemptive lifting of martial law. No, we still have a lot of homework to do. We still have a lot of areas to address, and that is why we still need it,” he added. Padilla said they are verifying reports that Maute group reinforcements have arrived in Marawi City. “Be that as it may, the forces that have been laid out in the lake area are adequate to cover any kind of movement. Now, we anticipate those kinds of initiatives from the enemy: one of people wanting escape and get out at the heat of the fighting; and second for the possibility of reinforcement also making their way through that same corridor,” he said. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said they have received reports about a plan of the Maute militants to use the hostages as suicide bombers once they are cornered by government troops.Philstar

Guam residents remain calm amid

Palace confident peso will recover

MANILA, Philippines Malacañang shares the optimism of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on the peso, saying the local currency will recover once global tension eases. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said the short-term volatility of the peso was caused by market reactions to overseas developments. “We expect that as international tensions ease, remittances, trade and tourism revenues will pick up in latter months. Those holding pesos will see their funds again,” Abella said in a press briefing yesterday. The local currency breached the P51 to $1 territory last Friday in the wake of concerns over the exchange of verbal threats between the leaders of the United States and North Korea. Earlier, BSP Governor Nestor Espenilla expressed confidence the peso would not do a free fall because of “solid” and “very strong” economic fundamentals. He also urged investors to “calm down” because the peso could correct itself “as the market calms down and digests the relevant information.” Abella said Malacañang supports BSP’s “continued prudent management” of the Philippine currency and international payments position. “Over the long term, we share the governor’s confidence that the peso gets stronger amidst our solid fundamentals, massive currency reserves and increasing attractiveness to foreign investments, as our interest structure upgrades and expands,” the presidential spokesman said.Philstar

North Korea’s missile threat

Residents of Guam have remained calm and are on a business-as-usual mode despite North Korea’s threat to attack the Pacific Island state, a Filipino resident said Tuesday. “Ang mga tao dito ay sanay na sanay na sa threat na ‘yan kaya kalmadong kalmado. Business as usual, parang nagbabakasyon lang lahat, so hindi iniinda ng mga ordinary residente itong threat ni Kim. Kung tutuusin, wala lang, kalma lang,” Gina Tabonares, a freelance journalist, said in an interview on radio dzBB. Tabonares said that Guam residents are likewise used to threats of earthquake and storms which have strengthened their resiliency. “Unang-una kasi sanay po kami sa threat ng lindol, sa threat ng bagyo. ‘Yung resiliency nabubuo na kahit ‘yung mga bata hindi sila nagpa-panic. Kasi ang Guam nasa ilalim ng maraming bulkan na palagi kaming natre-tremor pero hindi kami nayayanig. Guam is Catholic-dominated so ‘yung state ng Guam ay strong and at the same time, ‘yung state namin sa military ay very strong too,” she said. North Korea issued the threat after US President Donald Trump said that Pyongyang will be met with “fire and fury” if it continues to threaten the United States. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has placed Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands under Alert Level 1 amid North Korea’s nuclear missile threat. Under Alert Level 1 (precautionary phase), Filipinos in Guam, Saipan, Tinian

and Rota are urged to be aware of unfolding events and to continue monitoring reports from reliable media outlets and official advisories. The DFA also assured that contingency plans are in place for 65,000 Filipinos in South Korea and 42, 835 in Guam. Meanwhile, Tabonares said that Guam’s Homeland Security has disseminated fliers and has dispatched its officials to take care of each sector. “Halimbawa, education committee, ‘yung head ng committee on education

will take care of the schools and ‘yung mga teachers kung paano idi-drill ‘yung mga bata in the event na magkaroon nga ng ganitong crisis,” she said. “And at the same time, kung nasa ospital ka naman, kung health committee ka, you’ll take care of the facilities and you will ready all the facilities in the event na magkaroon ng kaguluhan. So kanya-kanyang readiness plans. Palibhasa nga palagi kaming may bagyo, sanay ang mga tao sa mga ganitong readiness,” she added. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/KG, GMA News

Parojinog siblings test negative for shabu, marijuana use MANILA, Philippines – Ozamiz City Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog-Echavez and her brother Reynaldo Jr. have tested negative for methamphetamine and marijuana, a development that police said will not weaken allegations their family is behind the illegal drug trade in their city. Superintendent Ramos Bergonia of the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory confirmed the results of the drug tests of the Parojinog siblings and others who were arrested following the bloody raid in July that killed their parents, Ozamiz City Mayor Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. and his wife Susan. “Urine specimens of the arrested living persons gave negative results to the test for the presence of methamphetamine and

THC-metabolites, both dangerous drugs,” Bergonia said in a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Tuesday. Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, PNP spokesman, clarified that the negative results for illegal drugs will not affect the case against the siblings. “Hindi naman dahil ‘yung naging operation ng CIDG is servicing of the warrant for any contraband that is indicated in the six search warrants – high powered firearms, explosive and drugs,” Carlos explained in the same briefing. “So yung dalawang nag-negative (Parojinog siblings), hindi naman negative yung result ng search warrant. Kung nag positive sila (drugs),

maaaring magkaroon pa ng additional violation of Republic Act 9165 or use of illegal drugs,” he added. Philstar

Pinoy-made horror visual novel ‘The Letter’ earns stellar ratings on Steam

Horror visual novel “The Letter” from Philippine game developer Yangyang Mobile was only recently launched on Steam, and so far, it’s been giving PC, Mac, and Linux users a great reason to play with the lights on. Successfully Kickstarted in November 2015, “The Letter” was first featured on GMA News Online in our coverage of the local game developers at ESGS 2016. The visual novel has attracted quite a following, and has been receiving glowing reviews on Steam since its late July 2017 release. Its rating sits at 97% as of writing. The rating is understandable when you factor in “The Letter’s” gorgeous art, sound, and wonderful characters. Most importantly for a title such as this, “The Letter” features a branching storyline that evolves depending on the player’s choices. As such, it boasts a number of diverse scenarios that you won’t experience in a single playthrough. Though “The Letter’s” story takes place in England, it is inspired by classic Asian horror films such as “The Ring” and “Ju-

On: The Grudge.” It revolves around seven diverse characters – the first of whom is a Filipina! – who become the unwitting prey of an age-old curse connected to the 17th century Ermengarde Mansion. As you assume the role of each character, you can help them survive, develop their relationships with each other, or lead them down a path of destruction. “The Letter” dedicates a lot of time to these individuals. You’ll be with them at their best and worst, delve into their innermost thoughts, and be privy to their deepest longings and fears. Characters who initially strike you as vapid or shallow become complex, layered people, thanks to the impressive characterization. “The Letter” also touches on a variety of social issues affecting each character, such as racism and the struggles of OFWs. This makes them more relatable, while also helping build a world that is believable and relevant despite “The Letter’s” fantastical inclinations. The writing is generally entertaining and at times even extremely clever. While it has

odd news Century-old fruitcake found in ‘almost edible’ condition Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A fruitcake more than 100 years old was recently discovered in near-edible condition by conservators in Antartica. The New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust uncovered a rusted iron alloy tin in Cape Adare containing the fruitcake which could be at least 106 years old. Conservators said the tin was in poor condition, but the paper wrapping was largely intact and the fruitcake nearly looked and smelled ed- ible. “With just two weeks to go on the conservation of the Cape Adare artefacts, finding such a perfectly preserved fruitcake in amongst the last handful of unidentified and severely corroded tins was quite a surprise,” Lizzie Meek of the trust said in a news release. The trust said the fruitcake, made by Britain’s Huntley and Palmers, was a favorite treat of Robert Falcon Scott and could date back to the Northern Party of his Terra Nova expedition from 1910 to 1913. “It’s an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions, and is still a favorite item on modern trips to the Ice,” Meek said. Although the cake survived the century well, a significant amount of work was required to treat the rest of the package. “Conservation treatment involved rust removal, chemical stabilisation and coating of the tin remnants,” the trust said. “Deacidification of the tin label and some physical repair to the torn paper wrapper and tin label was also carried out.” UPI.com

Bear breaks into SUV, takes joyride on Colorado street Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A bear broke into an SUV and took the vehicle for an unintentional joyride through a Colorado neighborhood by knocking the vehicle out of park. Ron Cornelius of Durango said he and his wife were roused early Aug. 4 by the sound of the Subaru SUV rolling into their yard and striking their mailbox. “Usually, I don’t get up at 5 o’clock unless there is a bear driving a car down the street,” Cornelius told the Durango Herald. Cornelius said he called 911 before he realized the SUV’s sole occupant was a bear. La Plata County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and quickly determined the bear had broken into the SUV in a neighbor’s driveway up the road and somehow knocked it out of park, causing it to roll down the street. The bear apparently got out of the vehicle and fled before deputies arrived, but they there was ample evidence of the creature’s joyride -- it destroyed the interior of the car and defecated inside before fleeing. “It would have taken a human being hours to do what this bear did in a couple minutes,” Cornelius said. a tendency to drag at some points, it nevertheless does wonders for the characterization, helping give each of the seven leads a distinct and likeable personality. It also suc-

ceeds in hooking your interest so deeply that you’ll want to see the story through to its end, no matter how bloody and brutal things get the further down the proverbial rabbit hole you go.

“The Letter’s” horror relies on a slow but effective buildup, so that when dark forces do rear their ghastly heads, it’s like a kick to the gut. And the persistent dread only grows in intensity as you progress through the story. The visuals certainly help cultivate the sense that there is no sanctuary from evil. When it comes to scares, the art ranges from the creepy to the downright gruesome – “The Letter” isn’t afraid to get gory. But whether the scene requires horror or not, you’ll be treated to scores of beautifully painted backgrounds and character illustrations at all times. Many of them are even animated. -MICHAEL LOGARTA

The actress added that she believes in intuition and so far she did not feel anything negative towards Paul. “Ewan ko ha, siyempre hindi tayo magsasalita, ayaw natin magsalita ng tapos, but we always lift it up to God na sana huwag kaming dumaan sa ganong pagsubok or trial or kahit ano man na challenge sa married life. Ellen Adarna explains new kissing video with Baste Duterte

MANILA, Philippines — Back into each other’s arms? Such a thought bubble popped into people’s heads upon seeing actress Ellen Adarna’s recent viral video showing her in the arms and locking lips with presidential son Sebastian “Baste” Duterte during a party only last month. So, does this mean they have kissed and made up? “That was nothing! Okay, he’s my ex-boyfriend. We’re still friends, we still talk, but wala na talaga,” enthused Ellen during an interview with Philstar.com Tuesday night. “We did it just for a show,” said Ellen, who was shown in the viral

video singing a Visayan song, which, according to her, was her “moving on” and “hurting” song when they broke up. “Nilasing nila kami, ‘di ba? So after the song, he went up and kissed me. It was really very friendly.” Ellen said that moment that they kissed, she did not miss Baste, though she admitted that sometimes, she misses him. She assured that she no longer feels hurt by the breakup. “Wala na, wala na. I’ve moved on. He’s, I don’t know, seeing others?” For now, she is also closing her doors for a second chance with him. “Not now, wala, wala, wala.” Besides the kissing video, Ellen’s

reactions to current events, such as the proposed tax on sweetened drinks, also went viral. In the interview, she said that she vetoes such a law because “even non-caloric food tina-tax nila.” As a smoker, she is also not purely for the nationwide smoking ban. “I’m a smoker. Wala eh, that’s the law. You have to follow it. There are designated areas and nahuli na ‘ko before. Sa Davao pa ha! I had to pay P10,000, bwiset!” she recalled an incident four years ago. Philstar

In talking with Airbus representatives, I asked about the Philippines. After all, I was told they were there before coming to Canada. I was surprised to learn that the Philippines had previously purchased the C295 which led me to asking about the plane’s alternative uses. It was an

The fact that a teaching is not popular is no reason to discard it. One way to disarm the antagonism that the external culture may inject into the marriage relationship is to remember that the wife gets to submit and the husband gets to die. According to the Bible, the man is the spiritual head of the family, and his wife should acknowledge his leadership. But real spiritual leadership involves loving service (a form of dying). apan has threatened to shoot down any foreign missile that crosses its airspace. So Pyongyang’s threat to fire a ballistic missile toward the US territory of Guam may be neutralized before the weapon can even cross the Pacific. Even if shot down by Japan or another country, however, the missile of Kim Jong-un will produce debris that can cause damage, injuries or worse upon falling to Earth. Among the countries in the vicinity of falling debris is the Philippines. When will the world be rid of this insane menace?

Take a STAND

There is always the possibility that Kim may be bluffing. But he has carried out several missile tests, prioritizing defense spending over food and other basic needs of his people, since taking over his nation’s helm following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. Analysts say North Korea has indeed produced a missile capable of reaching Guam. Kim has said his missile would not hit Guam itself but merely strike international waters near the island that hosts US military bases. US President Donald Trump, however, has made it clear that even such a missile target practice would be considered a provocative act that would draw “fire and fury” from his government. Between Trump and Kim, the saber-rattling could lead to calamitous miscalculations. Falling debris from a missile test could then be the least of the worries in the Asia-Pacific. Beijing, one of the few friends of Pyongyang, can do more to make Kim listen to reason, even as the North Korean despot stews over the economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations precisely because of the North’s nuclear program. The detailed plans for the missile launch are expected to be unveiled this week. There’s still time to defuse this situation. At the same time, however, it would be prudent for countries in the region to prepare for any potentially radioactive debris that might fall from the sky. Any consequent damage or injuries must be considered a result of an irresponsible, hostile act by Pyongyang. Philstar

Trump, Kim and grade school fights

R

EMEMBER the fights we had in grade school and how they almost always started with an exchange of taunts and threats? U.S. President Donald Trump and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Jung-un are behaving like we did then. The only difference is that they are not brave or foolish enough to personally trade blows like we did. Instead, they will let their armies do the fighting for them and there lies the danger to all of us. If only Trump had challenged Kim to a fist fight or even a gun duel and the latter had responded in kind to settle this ego thing, the world would have felt much safer because then we would not be facing as we are now facing, the grim prospect of a nuclear holocaust. Alas, adults do not wage their battles with the innocence of children.

If only Trump had challenged Kim to a fist fight or even a gun duel and the latter had responded in kind to settle this ego thing, the world would have felt much safer And so here we are, watching anxiously while the two leaders ramp up their rhetoric, unsure if one of them would actually order the firing of the first shot or launch the first missile carrying a nuclear warhead. Granted, the circumstances are vastly different and far more complicated than the ones that attended our grade school fights. North Korea is building or has built a nuclear arsenal that poses a threat to the U.S. and the rest of the world and the Americans have to diffuse that threat as a matter of selfdefense and in the performance of the country’s role as the

world’s policeman. But hadn’t the United Nations in a rare show of unity just recently decided to impose more severe sanctions on North Korea to pressure them to freeze their nuclear program? Shouldn’t Trump have waited to see if the sanctions worked before threatening the North Koreans to refrain from doing anything that threatened the security of the U.S. otherwise “they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen”? If Trump meant to scare the North Koreans with the threat, he miscalculated badly as the dictator Kim reacted

Frank malilong

THE OTHER SIDE just as belligerently, promising to make an “enveloping fire at the areas around Guam” with the use of the medium to long-range strategic ballistic rocket, Hwasong-12. Stung by the impudence, Trump thought that his threat was not strong enough and raised the stakes by declaring that their military was “locked and loaded” in the

event that North Korea “acted unwisely.” Trump’s bluster has rattled its old allies, notably Germany whose Prime Minister Angela Merkel, already not a fan of Trump to begin with, criticized the “escalation of rhetoric” as the “wrong answer.” New Zealand has also consciously distanced itself from the American president’s position. In our case, the threat does not come from a precipitate attack on North Korea by Trump despite his bluster. It is in the unpredictability of the North Korean leader. Not much is known about Kim Jung-on except that he is a ruthless dictator. We have to bear in mind that we are within shooting distance in case Kim snaps from all the Trump taunting. And we are a U.S. military ally, remember. -sunstar.com.ph

‘If rape is certain, relax and enjoy it’

T

HEN Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapus once quipped during a Senate inquiry into the rape of Filipina domestics in Kuwait during the 1990 Iraqi invasion that “if rape were inevitable, one should relax and enjoy it.” The late Manglapus, a polished speaker who could nimbly navigate through the layered meanings of words, survived the storm whipped up by his somewhat indelicate remark. His statement hit me at that time (three years after the dismantling of martial rule) as a commentary on the rape of democratic processes, human rights and people welfare by would-be autocrats promising the masses “short-time” gratification in exchange. This rape metaphor comes to mind when Foreign Secretary Alan Cayetano talks about relations with Beijing and starts sounding like an apologist of China. He is not a solo performer. President Rodrigo Duterte himself, a master of rape jokes, leaves the same impression by just keeping quiet in the face of China’s doublespeak on bilateral issues. This entanglement with China is beginning to look more like consensual relations, with the administration hinting at its willingness to be seduced with a $24-billion basket of promised loans, grants and assistance. Its heart racing in “Build! Build! Build!” anticipation, the administration is reaching to embrace the new partner and just let the future take care of the “Pay! Pay! Pay!” flip side of

• China’s reclamation still on – AMTI THE CLAIM of China that its reclamation and buildup of some features of disputed maritime areas was stopped two years ago has been belied by satellite imagery obtained by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative based in Washington, DC. The AMTI reported this week: “Beijing continues to reclaim land farther north, in the Paracel Islands. The two most recent examples of this are at Tree Island and North Island in the Amphitrite Group.” Manila periodically gets technical and intelligence reports of continued Chinese reclamation and militarization of outposts built in Philippine

maritime areas, but Malacañang appears too scared to complain – raising questions of what the deal is, if any. In February, the AMTI reported, Beijing completed a new helipad and installed wind turbines and two photovoltaic solar arrays on Tree Island. It shared satellite imagery showing that the island has had substantial upgrades in the last year. China has dredged a new harbor off the southwest end of the island, considerably expanding its land area. In 2016, according to AMTI, China started reclamation work to connect North Island with neighboring Middle Island in the Paracel group. After a typhoon washed out in October that year, China started new reclamation on the southern end of North Island and built a retaining wall to prevent erosion. The think tank also documented Vietnam’s dredging and reclamation work at several islets in the Spratlys. It said: “Vietnam and all the Southeast Asian claimants also have an interest in deterring future island-building, for instance at Scarborough Shoal.” It reported that both China and Vietnam have done dredging and reclamation work since 2017, but not on a scale approaching that of Chinese activities from late 2013 to mid-2015. Such work, the AMTI noted, is “environmentally destructive, undermines regional stability, and warrants mention in diplomatic statements.”Philstar

the coin. Cayetano’s bias for China surfaced again this week when he defended his limp handling of the closing communique of the meeting in Manila of the foreign ministers of the 10member Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He has admitted not wanting to include in the joint statement the concern of the Philippines and some neighbors over China’s land reclamation and the militarization of the artificial islands it has built on disputed areas in the South China Sea. While the statement mentioned “non-militarization” and “self-restraint,” it still read like a watered-down version of the communique last year (under the chairmanship of Laos) that voiced grave concern over China’s militarization of its artificial islands. Cayetano explained: “I didn’t want to include it. It’s not reflective of the present position. They’re not reclaiming land anymore. Why will you put it again this year?” But just the other day, this stance was blasted by revelations and satellite photographs taken Aug. 5 that – contrary to Cayetano’s disinformation and the claims of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi – China had

• Howls of ‘treason,’ ‘sellout’ heard CAYETANO’S tolerant attitude toward Chinese expansionism and militarization in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone has raised howls of cowardice, treason and sellout among wide-awake Filipinos protesting the rape of their sovereign rights. Like the communique of the 30th ASEAN Summit last April, the foreign ministers’ statement was silent on the 2016 award by the UNCLOS Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague upholding Philippine claims over features in its EEZ that had been grabbed by China. President Duterte, who chaired the summit, defended his allowing this omission. He explained that he did not want to antagonize China and trigger a lopsided armed conflict. As on other occasions, he mentioned Beijing’s offer of investments, loans, grants, et cetera. Are Filipinos being told, again, that if rape is inevitable anyway, they might as well enjoy it – and even cash in on it? The President and his top diplomat failed to see the value of putting on record Manila’s submissions at The Hague having been upheld before the

Children and parents have a responsibility to each other. Children should honour their parents even if the parents are demanding and unfair. Parents should care gently for their children, even if the children are disobedient and unpleasant. Ideally, of course, Christian parents and Christian children will relate to each other with thoughtfulness and love. This will happen if both parents and

children put the others’ interests above their own-that is, if they submit to one another. The purpose of parental discipline is to help children grow, not to exasperate and provoke them to anger or discouragement. Parenting is not easy-it takes lot of patience to raise children in a loving, Christ-honouring manner. But frustration and anger should not be causes for discipline.

UNCLOS community. They missed the point that citing it in ASEAN documents is not meant to force the issue or provoke the Chinese dragon, but simply to ensure that the case is kept alive until other Filipinos with stouter hearts rise to pursue it. The longer the favorable arbitral ruling is ignored, the more difficult it will be to raise it at some vague future that Mr. Duterte professes to have in mind. The unresolved matter could become a diplomatic burden to his successors.

to respect and love. Children are not commanded to disobey God in obeying their parents. Adult children are not asked to be subservient to domineering parents. Children are to obey while under their parents’ care, but the responsibility to honour parents is for life. Why James Reid is the new Pedro Penduko After it has been announced that actor James Reid will portray the iconic role of Pedro Penduko, the news did not sit well with some fans of the Komiks icon. Producer Viva Films, through an article on their website, shared the reason why the actor was chosen as the new Pedro Penduko. Originally created by Francisco Coching, James will be playing the reimagined version of the one written by Regene Estolatan. James will take on the role of Peter Harris, a bullied kid in the United States who, after his adoptive father dies mysteriously, flies to the Philippines to search for his biological mom. This is where his adventure begins. “When he finds her, he learns that she has been a victim of a curse given by a ruler of Eastern Kasamaan.” “As he embarks on a journey to find a cure, he learns so much more than what he originally set out

to discover. That he is no ordinary human, and that he may be the prophesied ‘chosen one’ who will save the entire town from the rising evil that threatens it,” the synopsis read. Viva added, “The modern twist aims to revitalize the dated imagery of the superhero for a new generation of Filipinos.” Pedro Penduko has already been portrayed by four other actors. Efren Reyes Sr. was the first one to play the role of Pedro in a movie and was followed by Ramon Zamora and Janno Gibbs respectively. Matt Evans was the first to portray the Komiks character on TV.-GARY ANN LASTRILLA

What’s the best way to

release the clutch pedal after shifting?

C

lutch in, clutch out. Left foot on, left foot off. Seems simple enough, right? For veteran drivers of manual transmission cars, the process is pretty much automatic (no pun intended).

However, there’s actually a proper way to go about it that might not be part of your driving routine yet. During a recent motorsports workshop with racing legend Vip Isada, we learned how to best release the clutch pedal whenever you shift: 1) When you want to press the clutch pedal, lift your foot and press down by pushing from your knee.

2) Once you’ve changed gears, release the clutch pedal by anchoring your foot on the floor (the same way you would anchor your right foot to toggle between the brake and throttle) and

flexing your ankle backwards. The reason, Coach Vip explains, is that lifting your whole leg and flexing your knee requires more energy than simply anchoring your heel and flexing back. By doing the latter, you conserve your strength for the latter laps of a race, or for long hours in traffic. In order to do this successfully, however, you must be in the proper driving position. Your leg must be at a slight angle even when it’s resting against the footrest/dead pedal or when the clutch is fully pressed. Give it a try the next time you’re handling a manual. Have a safe drive! -By Jason Tulio

Gerald inspired by family to brave challenges in “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin”

Gabriel (Gerald Anderson) draws strength from his family as he continues to fight against Carlos (Jake Cuenca) and his father Roman (Michael De Mesa), who finally discovered Gabriel is Victoria’s (Ayen Munji-Laurel) son in Kapamilya morning series “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin.” The latest test to test Gabriel came when Roman filed a case against him after the triathlete tried to save Victoria from being locked up in their home, which then led to his suspension from his university. He also got fired as Tiger Shark’s endorser as his rift with Carlos intensified, leaving him with nothing to provide for his family. However, just as when he thought that fate was not on his side, a new opportunity came knocking on his door as Tiger Shark’s competing company offered him to be their new brand ambassador with the help of Isabel (Coleen Garcia), further pitting him against Carlos and Roman. But despite the chaos around him, his relationship with Bianca (Kim Chiu) continues to get stronger as they face all life’s challenges together. What will Gabriel’s fate

be in the hands of Carlos and Roman? How will their family surpass all these challenges? How will this affect his relationship with Bianca? Meanwhile, “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin” continues to rule the morning block and consistently wins its timeslot. Last Monday (July 31), the series recorded a national TV rating of 15.9%, compared to “Trops” that only got 9%, according to data from Kantar Media.

big personalities when they express themselves through spontaneous banter. Leading the show is international star and host Billy Crawford, who will bring more joy and laughter in the show, with his funny and exciting interviews with the talented kids. “It’s my first time to host a talent show where I am the only person from showbiz, because I usually work with people who are already big shots. But here, you’d be surprised by how the kids carry the show, and I’m here to let their personalities shine”, Crawford said. He further adds that, “I grew up performing, and I know how rewarding it is to entertain people. But in ‘Little Big Shots’, you wouldn’t expect what the kids can do, their wit, and they are all very charming. All I can say is the kids featured on the show are very exceptional, and they really deserve to be called little big shots”.

Ankle rehab

AN ankle sprain is a very common injury that most people will experience in their lifetime, especially if they are active. This injury involves stretching or tearing the ligaments that support the ankle joint. The most common ankle sprains occur on the outside (or lateral) part of the ankle, and are usually caused when the foot is suddenly rolled or twisted inwards. Most people know how to manage an ankle sprain immediately after it occurs. You will be advised to rest the ankle, and apply compression and elevation to manage the

swelling. In addition, ice and anti-inflammatory medications will help with the initial pain. Depending on the severity of the sprain, your ankle will start to feel better after a few days to a week… but what comes after that? When it is safe to start reintroducing movement? If you start ankle exercises too soon or progress exercises too fast following an ankle sprain, you could cause more damage and delay your recovery. However, avoiding movement altogether can be equally as harmful. Today we will discuss active recovery following an ankle sprain.

The Importance of active recovery Ligaments function to connect bone to bone, and to stabilise joints within the body. Unfortunately, ligamentsdo not have great blood supply (avascular) and cannot be regenerated naturally. Which means once you have stretched or damaged a ligament, that joint will be likely feel “loose” or unstable compared to before the injury occurred. This can lead to reoccurring injuries if steps are not taken to strengthen the muscles that surround the joint. Next we look at some simple exercises that can be used to help the

muscles compensate for that instability. Range of motion The first stage of active recovery is gaining back range of motion. This can be started about 48-72 hours after injury and is accomplished by simply moving the ankle through its range of motion, as much as the pain and stiffness allows. The movements that need to be performed are as follows: Plantar flexion (point the toes down), dorsiflexion (bring toes up towards the shin), inversion (point toes in and down) and eversion (point toes up and out). Try to do 10 repetitions of each movement, for 2-3 sets daily. Once you feel comfortable performing these 4 simple movements, try combining them together for exercises such as making circles or writing the alphabet with your foot. Strengthening exercises As soon as you have regained almost full range of motion (compared to your healthy ankle) and you are able to weight bear with minimal pain, you can begin to strengthen the ankle. Try these 4 exercises to take your ankle rehab to the next level.

1

1. Isometric/Isotonic Strengthening Perform the same 4 movements as described above for the range of motion exercises, but do them against the resistance of a fixed object or exercise band. This adds an element of strengthening to the exercises. Try performing 10 of each movement (plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, inversion and eversion), for 2-3 rounds in total. 2. Balance& Proprioception Proprioception is the body’s awareness of itself in space. Improved proprioception can lead to improved performance in sports/ activities but will also help the body avoid injury. Proprioception is definitely impacted after injury, and is often an area that people

neglect to include in their rehab program, despite how easily it can be trained. For example: try standing on your injured ankle and balancing on one leg. Hold this position for up to one minute if you can. If this becomes easy, make it more difficult by closing your eyes, or by standing on a couch cushion or Bosu ball. Repeat this 5 times. 3. Calf raises To start, stand holding onto a chair or counter top for balance. Using both ankles, slowly rise up onto your toes (heels off the floor), pausing briefly at the top before slowly lowering yourself back down to the floor. To increase difficulty, try the exercise without holding on to anything for support. When that becomes easy, gradually place more and more weight on the injured ankle, until you can do 3 sets of 10 on the injured leg only, without difficulty. 4. Plyometrics The last step of any rehab program is plyometrics. Plyometrics are explosive exercises that both lengthen and contract a muscle at the same time. These are called eccentric muscle contractions, and involve activities like jumping, hopping, skipping and bounding. Some examples of simple plyometric exercises could include: - Jogging through cones/ agility ladders - 2 footed hops (working up to single leg hops) - Skipping It is important to remember, that while this article presents many helpful tools to get started, not every injury or rehabilitation process will be the same. It is important to listen to your body and to consult a medical professional as needed. Your local Athletic Therapist is a great resource for injury advice, and will design a program to suit your needs and fitness goals!

Metta World Peace son Jeron Artest, future Gilas Pilipinas player?

Jeron Artest, the 16-yearold son of NBA all-star Metta World Peace, is in the process of getting a Philippine passport, which means one thing — he would be eligible to play for the national basketball team. “My son already applied for a Philippine passport. He’s hoping to make the (national) team someday,” Peace said on Saturday in a report posted on Spin.ph, quoting a conversation between the Los Angeles Lakers forward and SnippetMedia’s Kristina Maralit upon his arrival in the country. Artest’s mother, Jennifer Ruth Uy Palma, is a Filipina. Artest was in Manila as recently as 2015, where a report came out that he was open to play varsity basketball in the Philippines. According to Maralit, Peace was in the country for 24 hours on a “personal visit.”

Usain Bolt falls to the ground during final race of career Usain Bolt, perhaps the greatest sprinter ever, was hoping to ride off into the sunset with a successful showing at this year’s world championships in London. His farewell meet took an unexpected turn when he finished in third place at last week’s 100-meter dash final. On Saturday, in the concluding race of his career, the disappointing results continued with the Jamaican falling down during the 4×100 relay final. Bolt – running the anchor leg – pulled up with an apparent cramp to his left hamstring. He limped for a few moments before falling to a heap on the track. His fellow teammates came to his assistance and Bolt eventually was able to get back on his feet and limp off the track. “It’s a cramp in his left hamstring, but a lot of the pain is from disappointment from losing the race,” Jamaican team doctor Kevin Jones said. “The last three weeks have been hard for him, you know. We hope for the best for him.” The host country, Great Britain, finished first in 37.47 seconds, followed by the United States (37.52) and Japan (38.04). -Vikram Bodas

Fans pay big money for Mayweather-McGregor tickets

Fight fans attending the muchhyped boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial artist Conor McGregor will have a chance to rub shoulders with the stars in Las Vegas -- but it won’t come cheap. The least expensive ticket listed on reseller StubHub is going for an eye-watering $1675 with two weeks to go until the Aug. 26 fight which pits undefeated boxer Mayweather against the UFC’s lightweight champion in a 12-round super welterweight matchup. “Usually for these large events it’s comparable to a Super Bowl. There’s going to be a lot of stars

at these events, especially in the high-priced ticket range, the ringside seats,” StubHub spokesman Cameron Papp said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list event, so the die-hard Mayweather and McGregor fans are usually going to find their way to the event.” The fight has not yet sold out, with high face values and a lack of access seeming to have slowed down demand. Yet Leonard Ellebre, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, dismissed concerns about the fight’s popularity earlier in the week. “This isn’t a damn Rolling Stones

concert. They’re the only thing that sells out in seconds, he told reporters at Mayweather’s media workout in Las Vegas on Thursday. “Right now we have over $60 million in ticket sales - what part of that remotely looks like ticket sales are slow? “We’re talking about tickets that go form $500 to $10,000. That’s an expensive ticket.” The $60 million figure revealed by Ellebre dwarfs the UFC box office record of $17 million set at Madison Square Garden in November 2016 when McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title. Hon. Wab Kinew of Fort Rouge aspires to be New Democratic Leader of Manitoba By Gemma D. Dalayoan

HONOURABLE Wab Kinew, MLA of Fort Rouge, might be new in politics but his popularity, especially to young voters is overwhelming. He has very fresh ideas or vision on how he would serve all Manitobans if elected as the new New Democratic Party (NDP) leader against veteran politician, the former MLA Steve Asthon at a party convention to be held on September 16, 2017. The last leadership debate held at the University of Winnipeg on July 27,2016 had Larry Kusch of the Winnipeg Free Press saying that “judging from the applause, it appeared that the crowd was mainly in Kinew’s corner.” He also wrote that Wab Kinew has the backing of theManitoba Federation of Labour (MFL with 100,000 members. Below is his profile Originally from Onigaming First Nation, in Northwestern Ontario near Kenora, Wab went to school and established his career here in Winnipeg. He lives in the city with his wife, Lisa, a medical doctor and two sons. He is an award-winning journalist, hip hop artist, broadcaster, musician, literary reviewer, and bestselling author, producer, media personality and university administrator. Wab has brought national and international attention to issues like violence against women and reconciliation with Indigenous people. Wab holds a BA in Economics and is working on a Master’s degree in Indigenous Governance from the University of Winnipeg (UW). Before entering politics, he was the UW’s Associate Vice-President for Indigenous Relation. Questioned if he has an

edge over veteran opponent, he declares: “The next NDP has to look different than the last NDP government. We need to return to our roots, listen to Manitobans again and bring a strong team that will build a new progressive movement in this province.” He further states that success is hard to find without hardwork, patience, diligence, and good interpersonal relations to people of all backgrounds. He realizes that the Filipino community is a large and vibrant community, and he wants to attend to many events as much as possible to listen

to the Filipino community’s concerns. When asked what he anticipates to be the number one concern he would be able to hear, he amusingly answered, “the health industry.” He declares: Health care is an act of love. We all agree the best way to improve care and reduce wait times is to move upstream invest in primary prevention, mental health, and better drug coverage. My family has seen health care from both sides - as patients, and providers. My wife, Lisa is a medical doctor.Six

years ago, my dad found out he had cancer in his pancreas, and it was spreading. Our family network supported, cared, and looked after him. When you help people stay healthy at home, they don’t need to go to the hospital as often. When my father left this world, he left with dignity. He was proud to the end. When it came, he knew he was surrounded by people who loved him. We should all have that. We should all have health care that helps us be the best version of ourselves. I will rebuild our health care system after Pallister’s cuts, by listening to people on the front lines, and by helping people stay healthy at home, so that all Manitoba families can be well. Whether it’s at the beginning of life, or the end. When you help people stay healthy at home, they don’t need to go to the hospital as often. Thus, I anticipate that the Health Care Industry will be the

main issue that many irate voters are going to raise especially the closing emergency rooms, laying off ER doctors, nurses, and other employees connected with the health care, and shuttering EMS stations in rural communities. When asked about Immigration policies especially the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), he comments: “I will focus on family reunification and lower the $500 processing fee.” In regards to education, he stated that at present he’s the education critic. He advocates for a smaller classes so that the teachers and students will have more time on one to one basis. He also states, I believe also in the importance of putting skills earlier in education and prepare youth for jobs, especially in technology. For the K-12, the current government is putting less and less money; not building facilities. For postsecondary education. I would like to prepare youths for jobs and accessibility to affordable education not only in the cities but also in rural areas. Right now the government is raising tuitions and taking away the tax credits for those who have graduated. I also would like to endeavour in creating and training people to find new jobs as some might be displaced due to the advent of technology. Queried about his ideas on multiculturalism, he states that he would communicate to minorities of some opportunities for government grants, accessing government agencies, and job opportunities. He believes that there’s “strength in diversity”. Wab wants his sons to grow up in a progressive place that recognizes the value of all people. He will continue to build on the NDP values of equality, prosperity, inclusion and reconciliation right here in Manitoba. Furthermore, Wab will work to make Manitoba a more progressive and forward-looking province while promoting equality and reconciliation here at home. With all his vision, strong educational background, abilities, and talents in all fields of endeavour, Wab is a “breath of fresh air in the Manitoban political arena”. It would not be a surprise if he becomes the next premier of Manitoba.

A Popular Chiropractor

AROUND 60 Filipino patients of Dr. Robert Stitt, a chiropractor, gathered on July 31, 2017 at Casarap Restaurant on St. James to listen to his presentation about the nervous system, and how it affects our overall health. Before the presentations, many testimonials were shown of patients who had been cured not only on bone-related illnesses but also those of breast, colon, kidney, arthritis and other health problems. After the presentation, a free dinner was served to the

attendees. Most presentations are held on Mondays at 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.; dinner at 8:009:00 p.m. Many are flocking to his clinic as he uses holistic approaches by giving his patients herbal medicine and exercises aside from the adjustments he administers to his patients. Dr. Bob’s (patients call him by his name) office can be found on unit 104-912 Portage Avenue close to Arlington in front of the Shopper’s Drug Store.-By Gemma Dalayoan

“ASAP Live in Toronto” Keeps it Lit on Social Media August 11, 2017, TORONTO, CANADA --- As summer nears its tail end in Toronto, dubbed one of the top five ‘most livable cities in the world’ according to time-honored publication The Economist’s Intelligence Unit Livability Survey, Filipinos continue to feel the sizzle left behind by the spectacle that was “ASAP Live in Toronto”. Two weeks after the concert, social media netizens continue to show love for the four-hour, sold-out extravaganza. Heart-warming feedback continue to be posted on the official Facebook page of TFC in Canada, TFC Live North America and personal accounts. A group of solid Kapamilyas’ video on TFC Live’s official facebook page shared: “It’s always nice to see these Kapamilya stars and we’re happy to see them again. We’re proud of Filipino talents”. It can be recalled on social media that as soon as the ABS-CBN Kapamilya stars touched down at the Toronto Pearson International Airport, the excitement of kababayans (fellowmen) was amplified. During the spiels shoots in various landmarks around Ontario like the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, Casa Loma, The Distillery, and Nathan Phillips Square, fans warmly welcomed the celebrities going around, capturing the sights and sounds of The 416. Online, the Filipino hospitality continued. “Welcome to Canada all the artists, road managers, (and) TFC staff. Good luck and enjoy Toronto. Thanks to all of you for being part of our 150th year”,

Facebook user Sally Mesina said. During the actual event, the Kapamilya stars did not disappoint their kababayans and even the locals as they performed one world-class performance after the other. Alma Pacetes expressed her vote of approval on Facebook even before the show started: “Just imagine the gift of talents. We are looking forward to see them all”. On Instagram, one post on the opening number from the personal account of Unopia alone, garnered over 30,000 views with many other related posts averaging thousands. “ASAP Live in Toronto” made an impact not just online but also on ground and united not just the Filipino community in Toronto but also from the nearby cities. “Oh my God!” Everything. Lahat memorable. We love the experience from team Montreal” while one said: “Enjoy na enjoy and sobrang saya!” as seen in a post at facebook.com/TFCLiveNorth America Truly, “ASAP Live in Toronto” is one for the books. The concert was not just a celebration of ABS-CBN International’s 10th year in Canada via TFC. MANILA, Philippines - For years, no one suspected Rhian Ramos’ easy smile and sunny outlook hid a not-so-pleasant secret. She was such a people pleaser she forgot to take care of herself. She wanted to make everybody happy but ended up down and out. “I used to be the type of person who had dreams but put them off,” she admitted a day before she went on stage for the concert Rhian of Steel, which her fans, the Cyberhians, mounted for her at Teatrino for her 11th year in showbiz. Insecurity tore her self-esteem into bits and pieces. “I didn’t like myself when I was younger. I’d look at the mirror and was not pleased. I watched myself on TV and got annoyed with my acting. I watched my interviews and hated my personality.” Today, at 26, the Kapuso actress pronounced the doubting Rhian dead and welcomed a confident woman who fights her fears. She goes fast and furious on the race track, with or without her Fil-Chinese boyfriend Jason Choachuy by her side. “I used to be scared of getting into an accident if I’d go fast (on the racetrack),” she pointed out. But thanks to Jason, an experienced racer she first met on the racetrack, Rhian conquered her fears, zoomed across the tracks at full throttle and enjoyed it. Now, she blocks her schedule once a month to join the Mini Cooper Race that sends her adrenaline rushing, her heart thumping. Away from the klieg lights, Rhian is in another world, testing her limits and discovering what joy there is in a non-showbiz sport that “keeps me grounded and offers me a slice of real life.” She found a mentor in Jason, who taught her extra racing skills like drifting. After all, they started out as friends. “He offered to teach me how to drift, or how to take control of an out-of-control car,” smiled Rhian. Her first concert was also a proof of Rhian’s brimming self-confidence. Years after dismissing this kind of show “as a joke,” Rhian finally agreed what to her was unthinkable at first. “I sing every day — when I go to the supermarket, shop, take a shower, or even make a sandwich. But I was always afraid and embarrassed to sing in public. I didn’t want to be laughed at by singers,” she recalled. One day, she “decided to let it go.”Philstar

able short take-off & landing (STOL) performance from unprepared short, soft and rough airstrips, as well as low level flight characteristics. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, the C295 provides an excellent maneuverability, outstanding hot and high performance, low fuel consumption and consequently, a very long endurance of up to eleven hours in the air.” Back in December, the Government of Canada announced that it had selected the Airbus C295W for its Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Program. That was why this particular plane was in Winnipeg and I am assuming that like Canada, the Philippines might be looking at using the same plane in search and rescue missions as well. The C295W has substantial Canadian content including the Pratt & Whitney Canada engines. Pilots will be trained in British Columbia and for us in Winnipeg, among other things, there will be a significant overhaul component to be manufactured here, which will be great for Manitoba’s aerospace industry. It was a special announcement for me personally because back in the early 1980s I served in Canada’s Airforce and worked alongside the 435 squadron at the time the squadron was located in Edmonton where I was posted as an Air Traffic Control Assistant. Part of my responsibilities included working with pilots and navigators of Canada’s search and rescue teams. I even flew in

their aircrafts at times. The C-295W is replacing the C-130 Hercules, an aircraft that I am very familiar with and fond of. After touring the new search and rescue aircraft, I am amazed at how far we have come in terms of technology. There is no comparison; it is night and day. The C-295 is an incredible aircraft and I for one am glad that we are purchasing it. I did some research and learned that on Feb. 16, 2016 a press release was issued by Airbus stating: “The Philippines Air Force has taken delivery of the third and final Airbus C295 medium transport aircraft ordered from Airbus Defence and Space. The aircraft was ferried from the final assembly line at Seville, Spain to Clark Air Base, Philippines. In Philippines Air Force service, the C295 will play a key role in the modernization of the force´s transport fleet and will undertake a wide variety of military and humanitarian missions. The photo shows the first of the three aircraft.” As the Philippines might now be contemplating the potential role of the C-295 as a search and rescue aircraft, I hope that Canada would give some additional thought to the potential alternative uses of the C-295. I must say that I was so impressed with the camera and radar system on board the C-295, you would be surprised at what they can see and read on earth as they fly thousands of feet in the air.

Protect your family – now and in the future

A

t the beginning of a “living-together” relationship, life is pretty simple. Your biggest responsibilities are paying the rent, buying groceries and deciding whose turn it is to clean up. It’s not until you but your first home that you feel the need to do something to protect your investment. It’s not uncommon for mortgage protection to be your first encounter with insurance. If the unthinkable were to happen, insurance can provide a taxfree, lump-sum to cover the mortgage or other expenses. Life insurance to cover your mortgage is an easy conversation to have with your partner, but the conversation shouldn’t end there. Tragedy can take many forms, like disabilities from illness or accidents and critical illnesses. While the odds of surviving a serious illness are improving, it can still be challenging to cope with the after-effects – emotionally, physically and financially. Think about the impact on your family’s lifestyle if you were unable to work and required assistance to do simple things like cooking, bathing, and dressing. A serious illness affects everyone in your family.

You may have some form of insurance and benefits through your employer, but this may not be enough in extreme circumstances. Benefits can also end if you’re no longer able to work, so relying on it as your main source of protection may not be the best plan. If you think you can’t afford another monthly expense, think about what would happen if you didn’t have any money coming in to cover the mortgage. Your financial plan should cover all the bases including budgeting, savings, a will and a family protection. Life insurance Life insurance is designed to provide your loved ones with security when you die. In exchange for regular payments, a lump-sum amount of money is paid to the beneficiaries after the insured person passes away. Insurance can provide the assurance that your loved ones will be supported at a time when they need it most. The beneficiary can receive the money tax free and can use it to pay down the remaining mortgage, cover funeral costs or create a retirement plan that would have been funded by your income. There are three types of insurance to choose from: • Term – A policy purchased for a certain term, such as the length of your mortgage. You can decide on the amount you need and may have the option to renew at the end of the term.

This type of policy has no cash value.

pointments and need home-care.

• Permanent – This type of plan covers you for life and is more cost-effective for long term needs. Premiums are higher than term insurance when you’re younger, but lower when you get older. Permanent life insurance usually accumulates a cash value, which can be paid out if you cancel the policy.

Making it part of your plan Family protection insurance helps ensure your loved ones are financially prepared should something happen to you. This can seem overwhelming and is a lot to take in. Let’s talk – I can explain how life insurance and critical illness insurance can work together to protect your family, now and in the future.

• Universal – A universal life insurance policy provides lifetime protection and offers more flexibility than conventional permanent plans. Premiums may increase or stay the same, depending on your policy. The big benefit is if you make payments greater than the required cost of your policy, the excess can be invested and grow tax deferred. Critical Illness insurance We’d all like to imagine a future with perfect health, but the right time to plan for the unexpected is when you’re healthy. Once you become ill, your options are limited. Critical illness insurance can help cover the costs associated with a life-altering illness. Imagine needing daily medication for a year that costs $100 a day. Ask yourself: Do your other plans – life, group health, or disability – offer adequate coverage? Would your retirement goals still be realistic if you withdrew $50,000 for medical expenses? Your family income could be reduced if you’re unable to work, need to travel to medical ap-
