The horizon is a line between chance and opportunity. I’m not sure what I will do come graduation, but I know I want to do something great, to be part of something great. I’m ready to take a leap and land somewhere with big challenges, a place that is asking big questions and solving important problems. A place where I will always be learning, and where I will be part of a dynamic team, collaborating, designing, building, and always thinking about our work and its impact in the world.

A brief Overview

At the University of Kansas I’ve learned how to think about design, how to think through my ideas with pen on paper, and how to work with a team to achieve something great. My time at KU is coming to an end the best way possible, as part of Studio 804 (p. 8), designing and building an addition to our school of architecture. It strengthens my belief in building, it’s what architects do, and I’ll walk away from school with my first built project under my belt. The summer I spent in Copenhagen gave me a glimpse into how the Danes live, how they incorporate what they value into the design of their cities and culture. I learned the Danish design process while designing a chair and then refining the design while building a prototype from a plank of maple (p. 28). Between my undergrad and returning to school I learned valuable skills framing houses (p. 38) in Seattle and then working at Henrybuilt (p. 32), which was a great experience that ultimately led me back to school for a masters in architecture. While in school I worked at the University’s engineering machine shop (p. 36), which complimented my woodworking skills with the precision and skill set of a machinist. While in Seattle I began to buy old cars because that’s all I could afford but quickly became interested in fixing them (by necessity at first) and so learned about the mechanics of a car (p. 46). This interest taught me all about cars which led me into study of integrated systems and resulted in my work revealing through diagramming (p. 48). I’ve been rock climbing (p. 52) for a number of years now and it continues to challenge me and take me to beautiful places. It’s the combination of the experience as well as the tension and focus required that keeps me heading out in search of adventures.

Studio 804 - the Forum

Can you unite a school of architecture with an addition?

Dean Gaunt’s sketch

This year’s Studio 804 project was to design and build an addition to our own school of architecture. The design was based on a sketch from years ago that Dean Gaunt drew from a vision of what he thought the school needed. Our addition is a 2,400 sf lecture hall and jury room space separated by a green wall, and additionally retrofitting the existing jury room into a commons space. The commons space is intended as the new “heart” of the school, meant as a space to bring people together and to showcase the ongoing work of students and achievements at the school. Following the tradition of previous Studio 804 projects, the addition will incorporate both passive and active sustainable systems and technologies. The building is intended to achieve LEED Platinum certification. This project not only hopes to bring the school together once it’s complete but it’s also a special opportunity for all the architecture and design students to watch day in and day out the construction and progress of the addition. The process in this way is just as important as the built structure we hope to have when it’s complete.

How will 100 years of infrastructure under our site affect the structure? With 100 years of utilities and infrastructure under our site we were faced with hand excavating the site to uncover all of the obstacles that we’d have to work around. Once we had uncovered everything we were able to land our columns where we wanted by incorporating piers and grade beams to span over water lines and other utilities that were in our road. We had to adjust the structural grid lines north and south to balance between where we could land our columns and the maximum span that we could achieve with engineered joists.

Three-Legged Chair

Danish Institute of Study Abroad

Why design a three-legged chair?

shaping seat back with a spoke shave

what’s left over

I designed and built this chair in the summer of 2012 while studying furniture design in Copenhagen. I was very interested in exploring the sculptural qualities of wood while looking at chairs by Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner as inspiration; especially in the way they designed the joints. From the beginning I was drawn to a three-legged chair because of it’s humble beginnings in the agricultural communities but also because of the interesting challenge of developing the proportions of the chair to make both a sturdy three-legged chair, but also a beautiful chair. I developed and completed my design in a 1:1 technical hand drawing in one-week’s time. It was an incredible way to work through the design in a very intuitive way, seamlessly working between accurate measured dimensions and visually correct dimensions and curves. I then built a full-scale prototype of my chair in two weeks. The two weeks of building provided further opportunity for refinement of details and especially of the joints and overall structure of the chair.

April 2007 - October 2009

At Henrybuilt I started as a production intern and quickly worked through the various fabrication roles. I was interested in process and workflow and so helped organize the shop, the material flow, and the process. I then took on the role of purchasing manager and at the same time worked on special projects including site visits, the installation of the new showroom in downtown Seattle, and various other tasks associated with onsite repairs or installations. When I left Hernybuilt I was working on prototyping hardware and design standards, which is also what gave me the motivation to return to school to further my design sense and gain the skill set of an architect.

I returned to Henrybuilt for the summer of 2013 but this time to their New York office with their design team. I worked under the guidance of the design director and worked on multiple projects at once. It was a fast-paced and goal oriented culture that pushed the various teams in the company to excel, to work together, and to constantly evolve to maintain the highest quality with the most efficiency.

KU Engineering Machine Shop December 2010 - May 2013

I always wanted to be a machinist. They seemed to have such a firm grasp of reality, which I think comes from their fundamental understanding of how to make things, from their ability to measure and machine parts within a thousandth of an inch. It changes how you view the world. I was fortunate enough to work at the engineering machine shop at KU, where I was able to learn how to machine parts on the vertical mill, the lathe, how to TIG and MIG weld, and everything else that comes with making parts.

Revealing through Diagramming Cars are incredibly compact and all their systems, the structure, and function are completely integrated into an overall design. I studied and was influenced by metro maps and how they are able to abstract the physical reality of what they are mapping in different ways that help the user understand the network and stops better. Isolating each system and creating a concentric map I diagrammed the different systems in a car. The final diagram is dense and is both simplifying and abstracting at the same time.
