AREA GUIDE - LONDON

The Local Lowdown…. Croydon is modern, vibrant, and a key south London hub, whilst at the same time retaining a ‘city within a city’ identity. With particularly strong transport links both into Central London, and out to Surrey and Sussex, Croydon enjoys an enviable location. Croydon is actively seeking to confirm this city status by campaigning to become London’s third city, as part of the Queen’s jubilee celebrations in 2012. With Boris Johnson backing their bid it is sure to succeed! Croydon Economic Development Company are driving funding to small businesses in the area, and with regeneration being a key priority for the council and related quangos, these are exciting times for Croydon.

As you would expect of somewhere that wishes to stand alone within the giant London metropolis, shopping and leisure time is completely self-contained, should you not want to venture beyond Croydon’s boundaries. Central Croydon is home to two large shopping malls; the Whitgift Centre and Centrale. As well as the usual household name retail giants that you would expect, you can also find a daily street market in Surrey Street. Purley Way is a magnet for shoppers seeking that unique IKEA experience, along with other hypermarkets and flagship stores.

AREA GUIDE | LONDON

“London’s next city?”

Shopping done, it’s time to head out into the social scene. The more refined will head to Fairfield Halls for a range of diverse gigs and shows throughout the year, as well as the Ashcroft theatre and Croydon Clocktower arts centre. The less refined will be drawn to the delights of Tiger Tiger, Larry Flynts or the Loop Lounge for clubbing heaven! Those wanting some decent grub are well-served by several Michelin starred or Bib Gourmand award restaurants. Tramlink, which opened in 2000, provides quick links to the Borough of Merton, and around the borough of Croydon, carrying 24 million passengers a year. The feel of an area on the rise is confirmed by the sight of property developers refurbing or building new office and residential space in the centre of town. Croydon seems to be on the up. Watch this space.

AREA GUIDE - LONDON

The Local Lowdown…. Situated 20 miles to the north west of central London, within the bounds of the M25, Watford is a modern town, with a multi-cultural population of around 80,000. The town was founded and grew up around a ford across the River Colne, which was part of the main route for travelers between London and the Midlands. First mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 1007, centuries of development and growth ensued, greatly sped up by the development of the Grand Union Canal, and London and Birmingham Railway in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively. This legacy of excellent communications and travel infrastructure continue to serve the town well today.

Vicarage Road

Sport is very popular and important in presentday Watford. It is the home of Watford FC, The Hornets. The team has had a long and varied history, probably reaching it’s peak around the mid to late 1980’s. Players around this time included John Barnes and Luther Blissett, and successes included finishing league runners up in 1983, and FA Cup runners up the following season. The club play at Vicarage Road, and share that ground with another major local sporting force, Saracens Rugby Football Club. Watford FC will probably be forever linked with their most famous fan, and former chairman, Reg Dwight. You probably know him by his stage name – Sir Elton John. He remains an Honorary Life President of the club.

Visitors looking for a typical Watford experience are recommended to head to Cassiobury Park – 190 acres of beautiful open green space. After

“Rich local history, beautiful parks and green spaces, excellent sports venues”

“In Watford, we have a rich and cohesive multi-cultural community and we want to make the most of it!” this you may want to sample the world-famous acoustics of Watford Colosseum, where such soundtracks as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and The Sound of Music were recorded.

Notable Watford folk –

Jack Collison (West Ham footballer) Geri Halliwell (Spice Girl) Vinnie Jones (Footballer/’actor’) Nick Leeson (rogue) Mo Mowlam (Labour politician)

After catching a show at the Watford Palace Theatre, or the Pumphouse, you’re probably ready for a bit of retail therapy, before hitting the superb local nightlife. For the former, the Harlequin shopping centre will serve your needs and rinse your credit cards admirably, for the latter head to The Parade – an almost continental style main strip that has more bars, restaurants and clubs than you can shake a wobbly, drunken stick at.
