Leading the teaching of literacy

Phonics & Grammar

Message from Chris Jolly, Managing Director

The past year has not been an easy time for any of us. Such challenges are followed by renewal, something which is now true for Jolly Phonics as well. Our Jolly Phonics logo, of over 30 years, has needed updating. The colour and charm of the past has been retained, and now with more emphasis on the ‘Jolly’. It is a fun word, for teaching that is enjoyable, and of course, effective. The same ‘look’ will be used generally, so for Jolly Grammar as well. The content of many of the products has been updated too, with fresh page layouts for the Pupil Books and with the teaching enhanced by introducing words as they can be decoded. The introduction of the new designs will take place in stages over a period of time, with this catalogue showing those available now.

Chris Jolly The programme trusted by thousands of teachers around the world Our programme is used in over 150 countries worldwide, empowering thousands of teachers who transform children’s literacy ability. The programme enables teachers to get their children reading and writing from an early age. As the leading synthetic phonics publisher, and the most experienced, we provide a 7-year programme that takes children beyond phonics and integrates spelling, punctuation and grammar too!

Systematic and progressive approach to teaching children essential literacy skills Embeds phonics, spelling, punctuation and grammar from Reception/P1 to Year 6/P7 Enables children to meet and exceed the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check and National Curriculum Teaching is multi-sensory and active with fun actions, stories and songs Training options to suit your school needs, including online courses, apps, scheduled courses and whole school training days Resources provide detailed insights on the teaching approach to help and guide teachers Flexible, fun and easy to implement in school 2

Results that speak for themselves at Tudor and Rush Green Primary Schools Emma Ince, Deputy Headteacher at Tudor Primary School: “We used a phonics programme for over 18 years, yet our results were still below average. It was clear that we needed to make changes. We implemented Jolly Phonics and taught the programme with fidelity and at a pace. This has truly transformed our Phonics Screening Check results to above 90%, where previously they were 24%.”

Lisa Humpheryes, Senior Deputy Headteacher at Rush Green Primary School: “If I had to summarise our incredibly successful transformation in one line it would be to say that Jolly Phonics is a totally kinaesthetic and engaging approach to teaching reading and writing. Ensuring that there is a consistent teaching approach in the school has meant that we have become the highest achieving school in Barking and Dagenham and beyond.”

Our Programme

Children continue to refine and extend their earlier phonics knowledge with each year providing: - 36 spelling lessons (1 per week) - 36 grammar or punctuation lessons (1 per week)

Phonics & Grammar

A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching The programme continues through the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear understanding of how language works. Sample pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the programme. These pages are from the Phonics and Grammar Pupil Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks.

Phonics (Reception) Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spelling of vowels.

Grammar (Years 1-6) Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children identify parts of speech in sentences.

The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take.

4

Spelling (Years 1-6) Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound before gradually learning that the same sound can be represented in a number of different forms. They start with the common variations, before progressing to other, more unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop their vocabulary for reading and writing.

The examples below show how children are taken through the different spellings of the /ai/ sound.

Children are introduced to punctuation concepts and continue to revise these throughout the school years. Starting with full stops and speech marks, children will then learn how to use exclamation and question marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens, commas, bullet points and much more.

Letter sound order

1. Learning the letter sounds Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as /sh/, /th/, /ai/ and /ue/. 2. Learning letter formation Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters. 3. Blending Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words. 4. Identifying the sounds in words Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling. 5. Learning tricky words Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately. 6

The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). The first group has been chosen as it makes more simple three letter words than any other six letters. This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

Phonics - Extra Support

Children who do not have English as their first language need guidance in saying the letter sounds correctly, which is just what the TalkingPEN provides. They may also need the guidance in blending sounds to read words. The result is an amazing improvement in their articulation of English.

Jolly English

Who is Jolly English for? Jolly English is an English language course that has been carefully developed and sequenced for pre-school children who have little or no knowledge of English. Join Inky Mouse and her friends, Snake and Bee, as they discover new words and phrases using songs, games, chants and stories that bring the course to life and develop children’s English language. Can be used before or alongside Jolly Phonics, or as a standalone early learner’s English language course.

This comprehensive course enables teachers to embed essential English vocabulary in their students and develop children’s awareness of the sounds of the English Language. Vocabulary is introduced gradually and the introduction of phonics concepts is systematic, laying the foundations for the Jolly Phonics programme.

Jolly English has been developed so that it can be used flexibly to suit different classroom scenarios. Suitable for children age 3+, it can be completed in a year or spread out over two years, and it comes in two levels, with each level providing 44 lessons.
