the_experience Our site is located west of the city center at the location of the old Western Gate, in the diverse, young vibrant district of Vesterbro. The name “Vesterbro” literally translated means”Western Bridge”, and refers to the paved (Danish, brolagt) road leading into the city through the Western Gate. Vesterbro is the area of the bridge into the city of Copenhagen, which was a much smaller city at the time when the name was created. ” During the first examination of the area and our site, I was fascinated by the disconnection of cultures and life styles simply separated by a body of water. Having three diverse cultures surrounding the lake with no means of integration is a problem. Because a city thrives off of diversity I immediately resorted to this assignment as a way to go further then a thermal bath, and to try and attempt to connect both sides of the lake with not only a bridge, but an experience.

Thinking of this assignment as an ”experience” made the program with in itself. All of the spaces and forms created on this project are simply places for interaction, wheather it be with the cold clean water on a hot copenhagen summer day, or going to one of the bars, cafes or saunas with a close group of friends or buisness client.

the_process program Our site is located directly in the heart of Copenhagen on a diverse, young and trendy street by the name of Nansgade right between the city center and Nørrebro. For this project, instead of focusing on one designer in particular I have decided to use this project as in investigation in to the process behind furniture making and design. I am purposing that instead of this building simply being a furniture showroom, which designers can actually rent out a studio space with a program that allows them to put on a furniture show showcasing not only their finished designs but all the process models and work leading up their final product.

concept Much like architecture or any aspect of design, the process is a key component in the final design. As a way to show that this building acts as a showcase for not only the final object but also the process, I have based this entire building off of a vertical progression through space with constant acknowledgements and gallery spaces showing off process models, sketch models and even a look into the designers studios who are inhabiting this building at the current time. Upon entering the building one is reminded of how living and organic these materials once were by entering through a raw materials Forrest/storage. The important thing about this space is that it initiates the journey behind the process from a more organic and natural state of raw un-treated material to its final sculpture. The next series of floors are completely dedicated into showing the viewer a glimpse into the designer life and their process leading up to their final show.(in the showroom on the last floor.)

facade Both the facade facing the street and the facade of the lift/light well are suppose to represent both the vertical progression through the building but more importantly the process of the designer. As the idea and concept mature within the designer on their way to their final show so does the facade transforming from a free flowing curtain into a more structured matured and refined form.

mask Las Vegas in it self is one big mask. False fronts of people all trying to win it big on their last penny, quit literally putting on “poker faces as a facade to try and trick, and project false accusations about them selves onto others. The strip in particular could be looked at as a giant mask as well. Extravagant water shows and bright lights hiding what really takes place under the fictitious glitz and glamour of this sinful city. For a city to be based on gambling, alcohol and prostitution and still be considered one of the leading tourist spots of the world only further demonstrates the importance of a mask in society. During the initial design process of this school I was fascinated on how a mask does not only disguise to trick but does so in a way to truly hide and protect its deep central self. This concept is not only theoretical but can also be translated into architecture. In order to further explore the idea of a mask, buildings, space and materials can all be used as a screen in order to filter out the harsh environment of both Las Vegas and the rough elements of the dessert. program

lantern_garden Student Huset is the most popular social hangout for students and young people to eat, drink, study, and have a good time day and night. We wanted to not only support their all day business, but to stimulate more through providing a truly unique and exciting experience apart from any other bar, cafÊ, or public hang out. Drawing inspiration from paper lanterns, we have designed a floating sculp- tural garden where peo- ple can inhabit illuminat- ing lanterns. Through the archway off of Købmagergade, the unique garden is eye- catching to passerbys. As soon as you enter the space, you are embraced by the liveliness of peo- ple. The design utilizes the site’s tall proportions as the lanterns move up and down like a whimsi- cal sea of jellyfish. The courtyard becomes more than just a place for stu- dents and can attract everyone from all age groups. It adapts to the day, night, summer, and winter to create an unfor- gettable experience.
