CONCEPT

HOW IMPORTANT IS SLEEP ?

TYPES OF SLEEP DISORDERS

Sleep plays an integral role in health. A good night’s sleep empowers the body to recover and lets you wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day. Unfortunately, many people have sleep problems and don’t get the rest that they need. Insufficient sleep and poor quality sleep can be due to diverse factors including sleep disorders, medical conditions, and mental health. Sleep issues affect people of all ages, and its impacts can be far-reaching.

Insomnia

BAD SLEEP

V.S

Insufficient Sleep Syndrome

This disorder occurs when you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or do not feel refreshed in the morning.

Insufficient sleep syndrome occurs when you regularly fail to get enough sleep at night and the result is sleep deprivation.

Nightmares

Sleep Apnea

Narcolepsy

This sleep disorder makes you feel overwhelmingly tired and has the potential for uncontrollable sleep attacks.

GOOD SLEEP

Sleep occupies 1/3 time in our life.

STATISTICS ABOUT SLEEP PROBLEMS 32.6% of working adults reported sleeping six or fewer hours per night in 2017-2018, up from 28.4% in 2008-2009. Between 10% and 30% of adults struggle with chronic insomnia.

Frequent nightmares that prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep are considered a sleep disorder.

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing during sleep because of obstructions in the airway.

Sleep Eating Disorder

These episodes occur when you rapidly binge eat while you are only partially awake.

It is believed that between 30% and 48% of older adults suffer from insomnia. As many as 15-30% of males and 10-30% of females meet a broad definition of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). For adults over age 40, 69% of men and 76% of women get up to go to the bathroom at least once per night. Around 57% of men and 40% of women in the U.S. snore. Nearly 60% of people with frequent heartburn say that it has a negative effect on their sleep. Insufficient sleep has an estimated economic impact of over $411B each year in the United States alone. Drowsy driving is responsible for more than 6,000 fatal car crashes every year in the United States. People with severe insomnia are seven times more likely to have work-related accidents than good sleepers. 40% of people with insomnia are believed to also be affected by a mental health disorder. Around 75% of adults with depression suffer from insomnia. More than 90% of people with PTSD related to military combat have been found to have symptoms of insomnia.

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking involves getting up from bed and walking around when you are still asleep.

Snoring

This loud noise occurs as you sleep when the flow of air from breathing makes the tissues in the back of your throat vibrate.

Groaning

Catathrenia occurs when you make a prolonged sound that resembles groaning while you exhale during sleep.

3 TYPES OF FACILITIES SUPPORT TO SLEEP DISORDERS

1. Sleep Department in Comprehesive Hospital

3. Hotels which focus on Healthy Lifestyle and Sleeping Advantages: • The doctors and staffs are more authoritative and professional. • Communicate closely with other departments in hospital. Disadvantages: • Few beds, few equipments. Patitents have to wait for longer time. • Environment and service is not so well.

2. Independent Sleep Center Advantages: • More convenient. Patients make appointments online and they do not need to wait for long time. • Service system is more mature. • Better environment. Disadvantages: • Price is slightly more expensive. • The amout of independent sleep center is less. • Less trustment from patients.

Advantages: • The experience of sleeping is more comfortable. • The functional facilities are more integrated. • You can experience multiple workshops to assist you sleep. such as... Singing bowl workshop Sleep aid aromatherapy Sleep meals Pillow menu Herbal medicine bath bag Sleep music and mindfulness meditation Wake up morning tea Cultivate mindful thinking... Disadvantages: • Do not have professional doctors and equipments. • Patients can not monitor specific sleep disorders they have.

REFLECTION AND SUMMARY ABOUT QUESTIONNAIRE

TO DO ---- TRANSFOMATION IN HOW TO IMPROVE SLEEP

1. Unlike what I thought before, people aged 18-25 and over 50 are more interested in the topic of sleep, while those aged 26-35 are less interested. I think this data reflects that middle-aged people are busy in life and work and pay less attention to their sleep quality, while younger people and older people have more time to adjust their sleep to be healthier. 2. Half of the people chose 0 or 1 for the degree of sleep problems, and the other half chose 2-5. In other words, 50% of people have the need to go to sleep facilities. They are the target group, which also shows the necessity of sleep facilities. 3. Most people rely on their own regulation of rest and some relaxing things to improve sleep, only a very small number of people will seek medical treatment and take medicine. It shows that the public's understanding of sleep is still relatively lacking. Therefore, the publicity function of the sleep center needs to be improved. 4. People pay more attention to the medical professionalism, environmental comfort, and price-performance ratio of the sleep center. 5. About sensory experience, people are more interested in auditory and tactile experience. 6. Nearly half of the people are willing to go to the sleep center when they remember, indicating that there will be some regular customers.

TO DO ---- TRANSFOMATION IN THINKING ABOUT SLEEP

Only sleep

A lot of factors would affect our sleep qualities. A healthy lifestyle (healthy meal, exercise...) would help us improve our sleep. The equipments for sleep are also essential when your sleep disorders get serious.

Be afraid of going to hospitals.

In a beautiful and comfortable environment to complete the treatment, no psychological burden.

TO DO ---- TRANSFOMATION IN SLEEP TREATMENT

TO DO ---- TRANSFOMATION IN SLEEP ENVIRONMENT

Internal communication space

intersecting space with the whole hutong residents

Vertical elevator becomes the only intersecting space between residents.

Nowadays, most people in China live in tall buildings. Residential buildings of more than ten or twenty stories solve the problem of overpopulation in China, and provide us with a comfortable environment. But, at the same time, the only intersecting space between us and our neighbors in a tall building is the elevator. Therefore, tall buildings with vertical traffic block the communication distance between people. People will lack a peaceful sleeping environment because of the cold and lonely.

The form of traditional Chinese architecture quadrangle courtyard can provide more space for people to communicate. Inside each quadrangle, there will be a small garden where people can gather. The hutongs outside connect each quadrangle courtyard, which greatly promotes the communication of the whole hutong residents. Compared with tall buildings, living in quadrangles can make people more relaxed and happy.

DESIGN IDEA

IDEA 1 ---- CHINESE TRANDITIONAL STORY <IN DREAM WITH THE BUTTERFLY>

IDEA 2 ---- THE ARRANGEMENT OF QUADRANGLE COURTYARD <LATTICE MAKES INTERSECTIONS>

[ A Transfomation in Perspective ]

A butterfly in Zhuang Zhou's dream

Zhuang Zhou once had a dream. He dreamt of himself turning into a butterfly, flying in the air, feeling like he was real capriccioso butterfly. In his dream he was amused and exhilarated without noticing that this butterfly was only something in his dream. After a while, he woke up and found that he was still himself, not a butterfly. He felt surprised and couldn't tell whether it was he turned into a butterfly in his dream or a butterfly turned into him in butterfly's dream. Zhuang Zhou in butterfly's dream

Each quadrangle courtyard is square, and the arrangement between quadrangle courtyards is still square. These squares provide a place where people can gather and communicate, and have a certain privacy. It's a way to have order without restricting people's freedom.

DRAFT PROPOSAL 1

DRAFT PROPOSAL 2

What need to change: 1. Toilets are too small. It is not enough space for both public toilets and private toilets. 2. Cancel the window display area, as this function is meaningless for a sleeping facility. 3. Change the position of door of the sleep monitoring room on ground floor, as it wastes space. 4. The staircase can be moved to south little bit, so the space of first floor would be large, and the space under the staircase could be used for storage and cabinet. 5. The garden space could not be some certain area, it may across through the whole space.

What need to change: 1. There is no shower rooms in the space, as a part of consumers will stay a night in here, so the shower rooms are necessary. 2. The form of the small beds is a little bit strange. It is not very comfortable for people to lay on. 3. The function of the experience area is monotone. May be more activities is needed.
