Our Students. Our Community. Our Campus. Our World.

CAMPAIGN VISION Our vision is to be a Christian University nationally recognized for Integrating Faith in Learning, Leading and Serving. Our strategic transformation plan and this Campaign are guided by these clear themes and priorities: • We will nurture a culture where biblical faith permeates all aspects of University life, building a distinctively Christian identity that highlights excellence and attracts the most talented and committed students. • We will relentlessly focus time, energy and priority on preparing students to succeed intellectually, professionally, spiritually and personally. • We will continue to attract, develop and retain a community of faculty, staff and coaches called to this unique institution, committed to integrating faith and work. • We will extend the CSU experience to ever-wider audiences, enhancing learning opportunities through online programs. • We will manage all financial responsibilities in our continuing tradition of integrity, accountability and stewardship. The Transform Campaign will enable us to successfully fulfill the vision of our founders.

“The remarkable thing is not that we have come so far in so short a time. What is truly remarkable is that, from here, we can begin to see how much farther we can go... as God uses this University in even greater ways.” R. Scott Woods, Campaign Chair President and CEO, South Carolina Federal Credit Union

Scholarships Enabling Access

More than 50 percent of our highly diverse student body are first-generation college students, and more than 95 percent receive some type of financial aid.

Great universities attract great students. Their campuses are populated with the highly motivated, intensely curious men and women who will take full advantage of their educational opportunities to become the leaders and transformative figures of their generation.  Dramatically increasing both merit- and need-based scholarships will enable us to attract and retain such students … including those who might naturally consider other universities. Scholarships allow our students to become fully engaged in the overall University experience, not only attending classes but participating in research, internships and community service. They’re able to devote more time and energy to academics instead of juggling jobs with studying or leaving school altogether to work full time. And while many students do work throughout the year, the ever-rising costs of textbooks, software, room and board – and yes, tuition – makes working their way through school increasingly difficult. Most importantly, enabling greater access to Christian higher education is essential to our founding principle as a school of opportunity. More than 50 percent of our highly diverse student body are firstgeneration college students, and more than 95 percent receive some type of financial aid. More scholarships are essential to give students, who would not otherwise have it, the opportunity for success in a Christian college environment. Your scholarship gift will transform a life and give a promising student the breathing space to put academics first in his or her chosen field. No other investment in higher education offers a better return. As a Campaign priority, we seek $10,500,000 in unrestricted and restricted annual scholarship funding over the life of the campaign, as well as $2,500,000 for named endowed scholarships.

The Christian Leadership Building Strength at the Center

The Christian Leadership Building (CLB) will anchor the heart of our campus and become the home of our Center for Christian Leadership (CCL), the University’s faith integration initiatives, and the primary resource for faculty development, community outreach and Christian service. This beautifully designed and landscaped 26,500-square-foot facility will be located adjacent to the Strom Thurmond Center, directly across the Reflection Pond from the Science Building. Brick pavers encircling the Reflection Pond will lead to the CLB entrance. It will be a state-of-the-art training facility for faculty, staff, and students. Individuals will be able to more fully develop their understanding and practice of a Christian worldview and intentional faith integration. As the Resource Center located within the CLB is established, it will provide a library of Christian worldview materials and works of faith integration in the various disciplines. The Resource Center will also facilitate plans to establish a scholarly journal in the area of Christian leadership. The CLB will house classrooms where participants will learn Christian concepts and hear leading voices of Christian thought. The lecture halls, classrooms, offices and seminar rooms will accommodate biblical worldview classes and other academic initiatives.

The CCL will contain resources for outside constituencies: church leaders, business professionals, community leaders and men and women from all walks of life. The Center will be a place of partnership and outreach featuring conferences, lecture series, seminars and a myriad of opportunities for campus and community learning and interaction. The Christian Leadership Building will help CSU to achieve its vision of national recognition for faith integration in learning, leading and serving. This building will have a profound impact on so many faith and educational objectives important to the University and our community. For these reasons we are seeking to raise $7,400,000 to fund the facility.

College of Nursing and Allied Health Meeting Critical Needs with Academic and Professional Excellence

Among more than 60 remarkable undergraduate and graduate programs at Charleston Southern University, it is difficult to overstate the vitality, impact and critical importance of the College of Nursing and Allied Health. Consider: • Formerly known as the Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing, the program was recently renamed the College of Nursing and Allied Health. This transition adds the kinesiology and athletic training programs to the newly formed college, which also houses the fast growing health promotion degree. • The nursing program boasts the highest six-year pass rate of all accredited BSN programs in South Carolina on the national N-CLEX licensure exam (96%). • It was one of only 15 nursing programs nationwide chosen to pilot the national BSN quality/safety integration initiative, and the program now is a national model. • 100 percent of BSN graduates are employed within a year, and more than 90 percent of our graduates remain in the Lowcountry, serving communities in critical need. • In 2012, a record number of prenursing students enrolled at CSU. Yet a large number of fully qualified applicants were turned away due to lack of space, facilities, faculty and training equipment.

Rendering of the facility expansion. Scheduled completion date: Summer 2013 Now consider all this in light of the fact that the nation faces a critical nursing shortage (with 55 percent of our nursing workforce expected to retire by 2020) while hospitals and health care facilities are adding demand faster than any other employment sector. (continued)

The Campaign for Charleston Southern University

(continued) Our nursing program is, in short, both world-class and essential, providing critical training and community services and an essential Campaign priority. Our plan calls for: • Spring enrollment added in 2014 to facilitate the ultimate goal of tripling enrollment • Expansion of the current facility and faculty to accommodate the growth of students • New state-of-the-art simulation technology for training • New computer workstations to prepare nurses for the national rollout of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) At the same time, we will continue to expand access to online degree programs for both RN to BSN and Master of Science in Nursing degrees, enabling working nurses to continue their service while gaining vital education in leadership and management, research and evidence-based practice, disease prevention/management and community nursing. Yet statistics only tell half the story. The people who work with and are healed by our nursing graduates provide an even more compelling one. Dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, Dr. Tara Hulsey, shares that it is widely recognized within the health care community that “...there is just something different about a nurse from Charleston Southern University. Our nurses offer a level of caring with compassion, patience, a sense of ministry and the gift of humanity that is a direct result of faith integration in our nursing education program.” Far more than one of the signature programs at Charleston Southern, the College of Nursing and Allied Health is a success story surpassed only by the success of our health care professional graduates who are Christian leaders delivering a uniquely compassionate and mindful brand of care to patients and families. For that reason, it is a Transform Campaign priority for which we seek $5,000,000.

Athletics Expressing Spirit, Passion and Purpose

CSU Bucs vs. Florida Gators. CSU Bucs vs. Georgia Bulldogs. CSU Bucs vs. Florida State, or Clemson or Auburn. Clearly, overachievement is not the exception at Charleston Southern University. It’s the rule. For students, parents, families, alumni, faculty and friends, it’s the source of Buc pride that never goes out of fashion. For CSU to compete at the highest levels of NCAA Division I athletics across 16 men’s and women’s sports, something special has to be happening every day. The inspiration to reach beyond one’s grasp, the motivation to compete against all odds, and the willingness to do more with less and achieve miraculous results all stem from the simple fact that faith integration greatly enhances our ability to develop student-athletes beyond the norm. In addition to physical conditioning and academic success, CSU coaches bring that essential third component: intentional spirituality. It is the essential difference. The value of CSU athletics is inarguable. The demands are incredible. To compete seriously in today’s Division I athletics requires certain things… to recruit successfully, to train adequately, to perform safely and to graduate with certainty. Those things are another of the Campaign’s priorities. They come together in a new 26,000-square-foot Athletic Complex being constructed in three phases north of the football field, along with a number of other facility and program improvements. They will enable us to remain competitive, both academically and athletically, in NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference. The expanded facilities will provide: • The Student-Athlete Academic Success Center, with computer and study stations to benefit every athlete • A 5,000-square-foot weight training facility • Dedicated conference and meeting space for athletics • New locker rooms for men’s and women’s track and football within close proximity of the track and playing field • New locker rooms for men’s and women’s basketball • New facilities for women’s softball • Lighting for baseball, softball, tennis and soccer The new athletic complex – the centerpiece of a whole spectrum of athletic department enhancements -- is distinctly designed to partner our two greatest assets: academics and athletics. They are central to the growth of the University, its history, its future and its vision of being nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving. As such, it is a Campaign priority for which we seek $11,500,000.

Academic Program Enhancement Enhancing Quality

Cultivating broad, deep and relevant Christian education requires more than a dedication to intellectual engagement and faith integration. It requires consistent funding to provide the technology and freedom to pursue new insights, teach them to new generations and apply them throughout our community in new ways. As the University continues to grow and strive for academic excellence, endowed chairs in specific academic departments will enable us to attract faculty of the highest caliber who share our calling to share knowledge in the context of deep faith. These departments include Nursing, Business, Biology, Religion, Criminal Justice and Education. As a campaign priority, we seek $1,500,000 for three endowed chairs. Of equal importance are endowments for a variety of potential academic program enhancements, including Faculty Development, Global Education, Research, Institutes within the Center for Christian Leadership, and Student Enrichment. As a Campaign priority, we seek $2,500,000 in endowments, unrestricted gifts and funds for program enhancements.

The Campaign for Charleston Southern University

Our Students. Our Community. Our Campus. Our World.

CAMPAIGN Goals Charleston Southern is a unique educational community in the truest sense of the word. Our educational model – the synthesis of a biblical worldview and rigorous academic discipline – calls us to excellence, in every encounter, everywhere, on and off campus. That pursuit of excellence has naturally led us to consider how, specifically, we can best respond to the challenges that unprecedented globalization places before our community, our nation and our faith. The University’s leadership, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and students have come together in recognizing that path and the specific goals of the Campaign: Transform student enrollment both quantitatively and qualitatively We know today’s best and brightest (whether or not they seek our intentional Christian educational model) look first at academics. The quality of education at the University, the facilities which accommodate the highest technical levels and the environments which enhance our unique process must meet the expectations of the most motivated, high-ranking high school graduates and graduate students. The availability of scholarships and aid must meet these expectations also. As we improve facilities, provide more scholarships and enhance the quality of the educational experience, we will reinforce our cycle of excellence: attracting more and better students, increasing retention and graduation rates, and ultimately creating more Christian leaders whose passion and intellect will carry our biblical worldview to the larger world. Transform the ways we instruct, assemble and communicate At Charleston Southern, faith integration is far more than an ivory tower idea. It is a fulcrum on which we can balance the values of Christian faith and academic excellence. To facilitate continuing success and explore new opportunities for faith integration in learning, leading and serving, we need more classroom space, more conference space, better facilities and new technologies that will provide wider access and outreach. Transform our role as a community center of education, culture and civic involvement As the city of Charleston continues to prosper, it will continue to expand toward our campus. By 2020, our strategic location can become the hub of a three-county metro area and offer immense new possibilities to further integrate our offerings and opportunities within the literal and figurative hearts of the communities which will surround us. (continued...)

The Campaign for Charleston Southern University

CAMPAIGN Goals (continued)

Transform the CSU athletic experience Our involvement in NCAA Division I athletics symbolizes our calling to excellence, our determination always to reach higher, and plays a key role in the quality of educational experience at Charleston Southern. As we strive to compete at the Division I level, we must honor student-athletes’ dedication and alumni loyalty with facilities worthy of their efforts and capable of meeting both athletic and academic demands. Transform our ability to give back significantly to our local communities One of our University’s greatest strengths is the fact that we are both mission-driven and missional: our students and faculty are deeply engaged in creating a better world through their efforts across an enormous range of service projects. On average, CSU students provide more than 12,000 community service hours per year.

As we follow the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 25:40, we must continue to grow our capacity to serve, to share the gospel and to improve the lives of others in the Lowcountry and beyond.

Our Students. Our Community. Our Campus. Our World.

Executive Summary In order to achieve our vision of a Christian university nationally recognized for Integrating Faith in Learning, Leading and Serving, and in accordance with our strategic transformation plan, Charleston Southern University is embarking on a multiyear, $40 million comprehensive campaign designed to transform the University and the lives of all it touches: • Transform campus culture through new and enhanced faith integration initiatives • Transform student enrollment both quantitatively and qualitatively • Transform the ways we instruct, assemble and communicate • Transform our role as a community center of faith-based education, culture and civic involvement • Transform the CSU student-athlete experience academically, athletically and spiritually • Transform our ability to give back significantly to our local community, region and the larger world The campaign will allow the University, now at full capacity, to grow with new facilities and resources devoted to academic improvement, enrichment, scholarships and endowments. It will benefit every field of academic study, every student and faculty member, while focusing on several critical strategic priorities: The Christian Leadership Building: The new academic center of campus. This 26,500-square-foot facility signifies the University’s commitment to faith integration. It will be the home of the Center for Christian Leadership, with state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls and conference/seminar facilities designed to enhance our focus on faith integration and Christian Worldview development on campus and in the greater community. $6,500,000 The Derry Patterson Wingo School of Nursing: This world-class and vital program is expanding rapidly to meet truly critical local, regional and national needs for highly trained Christian nurse leaders. To accommodate tripled enrollment by 2014, additional physical space, faculty, staff, equipment and scholarships are required. $5,000,000 CSU Athletics: A new 26,000-square-foot Athletic Complex to be constructed north of the football field, along with a number of other facility and program improvements, will vastly improve the student-athlete experience and enable the University to remain competitive, both academically and athletically, in NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference. $11,500,000 Unrestricted and Named Scholarships: Dramatically increasing both merit and need-based scholarships will enable us to compete for, attract and retain students of the highest caliber, who will become Christian leaders in our changing world. $13,000,000 Academic Enhancement: Endowed chairs in specific academic departments will enable us to attract faculty of the highest quality with a calling to share knowledge in the context of Christian faith. Of equal importance are endowments for a variety of academic program enhancements focused on faculty development, global education, research and activities in the Center for Christian Leadership. $4,000,000
