English Language Learners This workshop addresses the key principles of effective instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs) and will provide a framework for understanding critical components of ELL reading instruction that link directly to observable instructional behaviors in the classroom.

Literacy for Early Childhood: The LETRS Module The Early Childhood LETRS Module provides skills and information for helping young children build a strong foundation in early literacy skills. The program provides descriptions of the development of language and literacy in ways that create a deeper understanding of these important processes while offering practical strategies for building these skills in young children.

WASL Reading Scoring

X

7 hrs

Practice scoring the reading WASL. Teachers say scoring the WASL is one of the best and most practical professional development activities they have attended.

Number Sense That Makes Sense Number sense-an intuitive feel for numbers in their relationships – develops when children solve problems for themselves and continues to be a stumbling block for many of our math students. Participants will explore ways to expand and extend what they already do, add new manipulatives to their bag of tricks, and use the classroom to give kids a sense of humor.

Daily Five Book Study Come and learn about the Daily 5 and how it can transform your classroom and your students into independent learners!

Phonetics, Phonology, and Phonemic Awareness (LETRS 2) The common denominator for reading, spelling, and speech mastery is phonological processing. Explore the reasons why speech sounds are important for learning an alphabetic writing system, and why they are problematic for children.

WASL Writing Scoring Primary, Intermediate, Middle schools with a language arts block.

Making the Most of Read Alouds This workshop will show you techniques to use books in your classroom in a variety of ways that will enhance their skills as well as their concept learning. You’ll get ideas about some good books to read as well as ideas for extending the story..and the learning..into related activities.

Spellography: How English Spelling Works (LETRS 3) In English we spell with letters and letter combinations, by the position of a sound in a word, by letter patterns, by meaning, and by word origin. It is important for teachers to include letter patterns, rules, and word families in reading and spelling instruction.

COE (Collection of Evidence) Preparation in Reading & Writing Learn how to help your students submit a reading and/or writing collection. Developing prompts and using prepared prompts will be covered as well as hints for success gleaned from previous submissions.

Getting at Mathematics and Science with Block Play In this workshop we’ll explore possibilities with a variety of blocks and the ways we can facilitate and guide young children’s play to make the most of their experiences as young mathematicians and scientists.

Assessment to Guide Instruction for Prevention and Intervention (LETRS 8, 12) Explore screening and progress monitoring and their use in instructional decision-making. Diagnostic assessments, informal assessments, a spelling inventory, and writing samples will be examined.

Foundations Introduces the entire LETRS module 1-12 in a three day training. Provides teachers with an understanding of how students learn to read and write; the reasons why some students fail to learn to read, spell, or write; the instructional strategies best supported by research; and assessment practices that guide research-based instruction.

Unpacking Your Textbook We will learn techniques for helping students learn to read non-fiction texts and understand the structure of their books. You will also get ideas for students to make and hold meaning from texts they read in several content areas.

Making Our Time Count Math-Literature Connections This workshop will share great resources for integrating math and literature from trade books. Many new and old books will be shared along with strategies fro integrating texts devoid of mathematical concepts. Participants will gain ideas and activities to apply the next day, wee, and month. This experience is specifically designed for Pre-K through 2nd grade.

Differentiated Instruction for All Learners Take a look at Differentiated Instruction and how it works in the elementary classroom. Strategies and techniques will be introduced and teachers will walk away with new ideas to try next week!
