Read these top tips for adding festive cheer to your home using Christmas lighting! Add some sparkle with fairy lights Solar fairy lights come in a range of shapes, colours and flashing functions. Run them across your roof, pergola or fence, or try wrapping them around a tree or flowerbed. Make sure you use plastic clips or hooks when attaching your lights, rather than pins, nails or staples.

Brighten up your Christmas tree You can give your Christmas tree a whole new look this year with festive LED lights or rope lights. They’re waterproof, so you can also use them outside to add some colour.

Light the way for Santa Solar-powered festive lights are a great way to create a welcoming pathway for family and friends, or you can use them to highlight your garden beds.

Make your decorations larger than life If you really want to make a big impression, Bunnings has a fantastic new range of blow-up decorations in all sorts of fun, festive designs. They also come with LED lights inside so you can make them a feature at night. Head to bunnings.com.au for more Christmas decorating ideas! LIVE

Deck the halls Christmas is a time of joy, but also of stress and burn-out. There are presents to buy, meals to plan, and kids to entertain while you’re prepping for the big day.

Image: Mountain Cravings

With so much going on it can be hard to find the time, money or mental energy to decide how to decorate your outdoor living area. Here are some festive and affordable ideas for your outdoor living space. Christmas lights with a twist! Nothing says Christmas time like twinkling lights! You can go with simple charm by hanging lights from the patio or pergola posts for those night before Christmas traditions. Or if you want a dayto-night look, you can entwine some leafy and floral garlands with twinkling fairy lights to deck the proverbial halls. They can even double as centrepieces! Check out the weatherproof hanging lights from Bunnings ($12) and Target’s range of garlands for inspiration.

Unique decorations made with green waste Embrace an Aussie Christmas with decorations made from our native flora. Go collect some gum leaves and twigs from your backyard or local park, lay them out on some newspaper and spray the leaves down with gold or silver spray paint. If you prefer your decorations to be a little more colourful, you can get a wide variety of colours in metallic or glitter ranges. We recommend using these as unique centrepieces or hanging them among the lights for a more elegant effect.

Try an old tradition One traditional Christmas garland is made of popcorn and Image: Tara Dennis

cranberries. Why not give the kids another job this Christmas to make traditional popcorn garlands. All you need is some string, a kids sewing needle, plain air-puffed popcorn and cranberries if you’d like to add them. These garlands are super easy to make and extremely cost-effective, plus, popcorn is safe for birds to eat, so when its time to get rid of the garlands you can simply leave them for the wildlife to enjoy! Reinventing your outdoor room for the Christmas season doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. With these creative DIY ideas, you can decorate the patio or outdoor room for Christmas in no time. If you need a little maintenance done before you begin the Christmas make-over, speak to HV Aluminium about cleaning and maintenance services for your patio, pergola or outdoor room.

Green thumb Get your garden in shape the eco-way this season with our earth-friendly tips and tricks.

Water consciously

Recycle and reuse

we’re also subject to Level Two water restrictions, which means that

We have a real overflow of plastic bottles here in Australia that aren’t able to be recycled, but there’s good news! You can give them a second life in your garden. Grow your seedlings in plastic bottles, milk or egg cartons before transferring them to your garden so they are protected from the winds and any pests that could cause damage before they are strong enough to thrive on their own. If you want to grow them straight from your garden or pot, you can cut the bottom

We’re facing a lot of droughts at the moment, so it’s more important than ever that we conserve water where we can. In New South Wales, you can only water your garden before 10am and after 4pm, and it must be with a watering can or bucket as hoses aren’t permitted (See your local Water Body for more information on the restrictions that apply to you). Some other ways you can help these efforts include reusing grey water from your bath, sink or shower (your local Water Body can advise how to do this responsibly) or using plants that are drought tolerant.

off of a plastic bottle and place it over the seedling, removing well before it outgrows the container. Rinse and store these bottles for future seedling plantings throughout the year.

Plant natives Utilising native plants in your garden is the best way to cultivate a landscape that doesn’t require much maintenance. Native plants are suited to your environment, and as such won’t require a lot of water or fertiliser. They also help to reduce weeds and will save you time and money. Local nurseries or landscapers can advise on the plants that are native to your area.

Consider composting Composting is perfect for making the most out of your excess leaves, grass clippings or kitchen waste. Not only is it great for reducing landfill, but it can also be used in the soil of your garden to add nutrients to your plants. There are plenty of online guides you can use to help start a compost heap, and Bunnings is one such resource, which has video tutorials, tools and materials you’ll need and a stepby-step guide to set one up. If you have any questions about creating and maintaining an ecofriendly garden, Watagan Park Landscaping is one of the best local experts to assist you. Visit wataganparklandscaping.com.au LIVE

Christmas cheer There’s nothing like the smell of fresh biscuits to kick off a good holiday feast. Packed with nutritious Weet-Bix and rolled oats, these Reindeer Bikkies are the perfect festive addition to any Christmas party. And why not celebrate this season of family by making them with your loved ones?

Holiday helpers Soothe your senses over the hectic Christmas period with these useful plants! Smell Peace Lilies are subtly fragrant and happily bloom throughout the year. They are low maintenance and widely known for their air purifying quality—perfect for opening up the home and adding a breath of fresh air to any space. Peace Lilies do need both sun and shade to survive, so if you introduce them to your home, make sure to place them in just the right spot to achieve both.

See These pointy succulents are aptly named Mother-In-Law’s Tongue. Representing the sharpness of a certain in-law’s speech, these gorgeous plants take very little effort to care for and will provide a fresh look to your home. They also help remove pollutants from the air. These plants are toxic for cats and dogs, so they won’t be ideal for those with pets.

Taste Keeping a small herb garden perched on your kitchen windowsill is a great way to add instant flavour to your Christmas dishes. The best herbs to grow in the summer period are ones such as basil, sage and thyme. To care for your herb garden, make sure that you take it outside from time to time to ensure it is getting enough sunlight and fresh air. You can also use a liquid fertiliser to make sure it has enough nutrients.

Feel Aloe Vera is known for its medicinal and therapeutic qualities. It’s perfect for soothing sunburns during summer and also makes for a super soft moisturiser. Aloe Vera thrives in bright, indirect sunlight, and indoor temperatures just so happen to be the most ideal for this plant.

Meet your neighbours

A Christmas blessing Bertrand, his wife Htwe and two children, Annabelle and Oliver, can’t wait to celebrate their first Christmas in their new home at Watagan Park. Watagan Park is known for its close community atmosphere and beautiful surrounds, which is why many families are flocking to the estate to set up their forever home. Bertrand, 33, and wife Htwe, 30, couldn’t resist the charm of the area, and with their two young children, Annabelle, 4, and Oliver, 1, they made the move just in time for Christmas. “Watagan Park looked very beautiful! The entrance to the estate has those beautiful trees, and the surrounding bushland made the place very peaceful and inviting,” shares Bertrand. Bertrand was originally from Mauritius and Htwe from Burma (Myanmar). He is a nursing student at Avondale College and works in the college bookshop, while she is a nurse at Sydney Adventist Hospital. Together, they decided that Watagan Park was the most affordable option for their young family.

“It was cheaper to build a brand new home than to buy an established home at the time for us,” says Bertrand. They were also sold on the friendliness of the neighbours and the closeness of the estate to Avondale School, which is where they plan on sending their kids in the near future. The building process for Bertrand and Htwe went very smoothly, only taking around five months to complete. They are excited to start enjoying everything the Watagan Park lifestyle has to offer.

“My family likes adventures, and there are plenty of bushlands (perfect for our kids who love camping, enjoying the outdoors and exploring nature), bushwalks and the Watagan Mountains are very close by. The gym and local swimming pool is also about six minutes from us,” explains Bertrand. Join us in extending a warm welcome to this friendly family, and help us wish them a wonderful Christmas in their new home!
