THE FUN AND CHALLENGES OF LEARNING PHOTOSHOP

My grandfather has been into photography for most of his life. He was a man of many jobs and photography was just a hobby, but he treated it as if it was another job. He did not just have a camera. He had the top of the line camera with the best lens you could find. He does not just set the frame and take a picture. He has lights on stands to make sure that he gets the perfect shot. He is a traditionalist when it comes to photography, much-preferring film to the digital age, but today, we are able to manipulate pictures like never before thanks to programs like Adobe Photoshop.

Every year, my family gets together and my grandfather takes a picture of all of us together. This is a tradition that has gone back over 40 years, long before I was born. One year, my cousin was studying abroad in another country, so my grandfather asked him to take a picture that he could Photoshop later. The result was my cousin joining my brother and me to form a twobodied, three-headed monstrosity in the corner. He could definitely have used some Adobe Photoshop training classes.

The reality now is that if my grandfather was getting into photography for real these days, he might go to a career academy school to gain the technical skills necessary. There is more done in the edit bays than ever when it comes to photography, which is why you might want to make sure that your skills with the software are up to par. We are all photographers these days, which is why the differentiator when it comes to professionals versus amateurs comes from what you do after the photo is taken or occasionally how you frame things. The world of photography is changing as we know it. Photoshop has become so ubiquitous as the photo editing tool we all know that it is practically a verb, just like Google. That said, there are competitors in the market. There are free photo editors online that you can use, but more than that, Snapchat is one of the largest growing camera companies in the world. You might be wondering why I am calling Snapchat a camera company. Is it not a social media company? You are right in the fact that you use it for social media, but if you go to Snap Inc.’s homepage, you will see the first line say, “Snap Inc. is a camera company.” When the world got obsessed with FaceApp, we did not really think about the wonders of something that read our picture and so accurately morphed it only through a computer program. That used to be the work done in Photoshop.

If the world is going to have procedurally edited photos that are done by computer apps rather than human inputs, what is the point of taking career academy courses in photography? Why pursue it at all? Well, I would say that there will always be a market for professional photographers, even if you are just renting a person that owns a nicer camera than you do.

Photoshop will always be there not just for photographers, but also for graphic designers. If you are a sports fan, you have probably seen the instant jersey swap that occurs on news sites when a player changes teams. The fans love it, but they often do not think about the person frantically searching the web for matching body shapes as soon as trade news strikes from a Woj Bomb. Taking academy online courses can be an easy way to stand out from the amateur jamokes.
