Christopher, fifteen years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, Wellington. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in his book to solve the mystery. He has an extraordinary brain, exceptional at maths but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. Flavel Recitals

A series of short recitals given by local musicians with wide ranging and varied programmes, a chance to relax at lunchtime.

A short film by Marc Tiley Based on the poem by Alice Oswald

Lunchtime Concert Series

Take your ticket for this free event to the cafe to receive the £6 meal deal. Co-ordinated by Helen Deakin, with a retiring collection. Thu Sept 13 - Thu Oct 11 - Thu Nov 8 -

John Key (double bass) & Phil Watson (accordion) Ben & Alfie (violin & double bass) 2 Classically trained young musicians with a twist! The Flavel Singers, directed by Norman Cork

Over a decade ago, poet Alice Oswald began recording conversations with the people who live on the river Dart. Her subsequent poem, ‘Dart’ (2002), created a sound-map of the river, a songline from the source to the sea. The book-length poem won the prestigious T.S.Eliot Prize and became a national favourite. Director Marc Tiley has made a film version of ‘Dart’, by combining the words of the poem with actual observations of real people. The film creates a rare and unforgettable portrait of a community, and follows the varying character of the river itself, from its mysterious source on high Dartmoor, to the sea at Dartmouth, and beyond. At the performance Alice Oswald will read from the poem, and director, Marc Tiley, will discuss the project. This project has been supported by the South Devon AONB Sustainable Development Fund.

Directed by: Howard Davies Anarchic, feisty but growing old, high society drop-out Judy Haussman remains in spirit with the Ashrams of the 1960s while holding court in her dilapidated Art Deco house on the Devon coast. After an operation, she’s joined by wayward offspring Nick and Libby, sharp-eyed granddaughter Summer, local doctor Peter, and Daniel, a troubled teenager who makes use of the family’s crumbling swimming pool. Steve Hughes

Christoph Stiefel (piano), Arne Huber (double bass), Kevin Chesham (drums)

Big Issues

Hailing from Zurich, Stiefel has already enjoyed a long and diverse career in Europe but may well be a new name to jazz audiences in the UK. Stiefel has collaborated with the gifted pianist Gwilym Simcock as part of the recent Steinway Festival series of piano duos at London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club. Christoph Stiefel is a highly imaginative pianist, and has the delicate touch of the experienced, free-spirited improviser. “One doesn’t only prick up one’s ears to the unusual selection of pieces, but also listens to the nearly inexhaustible richness of fascinating sounds.”

Inimitable Australian comic and ex heavy metal drummer, Steve Hughes embarks upon his eagerly-awaited debut tour. Direct from sell-out shows at the Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals and storming sets on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC1), Stand Up For The Week (C4) & One Night Stand (Dave). Expect intelligent, straight-talking social commentary from one of the most original and thought-provoking performers to grace the UK circuit. “Intelligent, provocative, profound. Surely the greatest of all Romantic ballets, Swan Lake is a perfect synthesis of choreography and music. Though Tchaikovsky did not live to see the work become a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspiring generations of dancers and crossing over into popular culture. The court scenes of Acts I and III have a dark glamour rooted in the opulent style of Carl Fabergé, while the famous lakeside ‘white’ acts are rich with mist, shadow and moonlight. A Very Dickensian Christmas

December May

Royal Opera House Live Screening

Theatre Master story-teller, Andrew Meller, star of An Evening with the humour of Bob Newhart & Tom Lehrer, Talbot House and An Audience with Sherlock Holmes, presents a festive and topical evening of favourite Dickensian characters and stories. This show is a rich homage to the man who singularly influenced our Christmas festivities more than any other. There is of course Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the ghosts from Christmas Carol, but also Pickwick and his Christmas at Dingley Dell, Pip’s Christmas encounter with the escaped convict Magwitch on the marshes, Christmas Eve in Cloisterham from The Mystery of Edwin Drood and The Christmas Dinner from Sketches by Boz.

The Nutcracker Peter Wright after Lev Ivanov | Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky | Ballet in two acts From the very first notes of Tchaikovsky’s overture to The Nutcracker, a sense of mystery and magic is in the air. It is Christmas Eve and we are brought to a party at which Drosselmeyer gives young Clara a nutcracker doll – beginning a night that includes a magically growing Christmas tree, a midnight battle of toy soldiers at which the Nutcracker defeats the villainous Mouse King and his army of mice, and a headlong pas de deux in which Clara and Hans Peter meet and celebrate their triumph before being enveloped in a magical snowstorm. The young pair are whisked off to be entertained by the Sugar Plum Fairy with her handsome Prince and her glittering court in a series of dazzling dances. Peter Wright’s classic production, is an essential part of Christmas for audiences of all ages. Christmas isn’t Christmas without Dickens, not to be missed!

The Origins of Food in South Devon – Steve Bond.

This is the first exhibition of Susanne’s work since she came to live and work in Kingswear in 2010. The new work includes pastels, oils, charcoal drawings and prints exploring the artist’s enthusiasm for places and people. The work seeks to capture the spirit of our ever changing river and beloved local landscape. The exhibition contrasts these outdoor studies with an exceptional display of depth and detail within the portraits on show.

Roy Lang

Dittisham based fine art photographer, Steve Bond, displays a series of photographs exploring the origins of food in South Devon. Whilst the deliciously edible end results are being featured at the Dartmouth Food Festival, Steve’s pictures will give an insight into the farming, fishing and food production industries surrounding the town.
