F I R E S TAT I O N N O. 4

Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the fire station attempts to understand the manner in which a fire station responds to an emergency. The building analyses the spatial relationships between program, equipment, and the firefighters themselves. I seeks to optimize response time, while expressing this analysis via form and facade.

5

First, the program is expressed, not in feet and inches, but in human strides.

All program elements, and pieces of equipment are remeasured in in units of stride. Then they are arranged on a stride grid according to the movment studies undergone in the previous exercises.

The facade of the building expresses the stride grid upon which the building is organized. The pushing outside of the building express the way in which peripheral program elements are moved in deference to elements which must stay close to the trucks.

Designed as a low, linear volume occupying less than half of the site, the chapel encourages pedestrian flow between Via Giulia and the adjacent park.

17

Meant as an abstraction of a colonnade found surrounding the cloisters of a medieval monastery, the frames provide shelter, while remaining permeable.

18

The resulting space, shared by both the new chapel and neighboring church, serves as a new type of public cloister, providing both respite and valuable public space for contemporary Rome.

My photography seeks to recognize similarities and differences in the built environment. Sometimes I seek them out, sometimes I stumble upon them. The following photo pairings illustrate this process.

Rather than the production of precious drawings, I see skethcing as a means of caputring the essence of locations or ideas. I following sketches attempt to translate places onto paper.
