A Great Winter Gala at Tatsu’s By Bob Smith Tatsu’s Restaurant in Prairie Village was the site of the 2014 Winter Gala on Saturday night, January 11th. The members enjoyed wonderful appetizers and tasty beverages during a good session of mingling and chatting about everything from sports to the weather. Most talk seemed to be about the experiences with the Kansas City Section events during the year of 2013. And, there was a lot to talk about. President’s Message by Mark Moody

Greetings Benz Friends, A new year has arrived, and the board and I are working on plans for this years events. We’re looking forward to seeing you at a Saturday Breakfast, a Sunday Drive, a Spaßnacht or one of our other special events this year. If you haven’t been to an event, come join us. As always, we’re always looking for fresh ideas, and extra hands to help out. Last time I wrote to you about a proposal to host StarFest in 2014, MBCA’s national event. The board and I sat down and worked to try and reconcile our proposal with input from the national board. After a lot of discussion, our board came to the conclusion that our resources are not up to the task in the time given to host a successful event. As a result we formally withdrew our proposal to the national board. Our enthusiasm for this event is not diminished, and hopefully there will be an opportunity in the future that will work for us. Another milestone is passed, or, should we say Larry Barnes’ 1997 S320 reaches another “kilometerstone”? One million kilometers is equal to 621,371.19 miles. And Larry’s Mercedes-Benz continues to perform flawlessly. To recognize the achievement, Larry was presented a certificate from the MercedesBenz Classic Center USA proclaiming the million kilometers achieved by his S320.

Tom Strongman - Our Special Guest at February Breakfast Meeting

Tom Strongman, Automotive feature writer for many motorcar publications and the Kansas City Star, was our speaker at the February breakfast meeting. Despite the overnight sleet storm there Tom Strongman makes a point were about 15 members for his slide show of classic cars present to see Tom’s he has photographed. Looking slide show. Besides on is Mark Moody. Photo by Bob Smith motorcars, Tom’s other passion in life is photography, and his skills were evident in his outstanding photos of cars. Tom presented three separate features. The first; classic cars that he has photographed over the years. Tom knows the names and details about all of them, some of which are very rare and relatively unknown to the average car buff. His second presentation was of vintage hot-rod cars. Chrome is a must for nearly every visible component in the engine compartment. Chrome skull-like forms are popular on the gear shift, hood ornament, etc. The third feature was of some of Tom’s favorite non-automotive photos. He showed wonderful landscape photos taken around the country. Tom said his primary job in life is being the family history photographer.

Defensive Driving / Autocross Saturday, August 2nd The Kansas City Section will sponsor the Midwest Regional Defensive Driving and Autocross School at Metropolitan Community College in Independence, Mo., on Saturday, August 2, 2014. The event will begin with classroom training on vehicle dynamics and driving techniques. We will then move to the MCC drivers training facility a few blocks east of the college for “hands-on” defensive driving followed by the opportunity to sharpen your skills on a low speed autocross course. Experienced instructors will

provide in-car training for drivers on the defensive driving course and on the autocross course. Drivers of all ages, including young drivers age 16 and older with a valid drivers license, are encouraged to attend. Some auto insurance companies will reduce premiums for those drivers who complete this course. A dinner at a location to be determined is planned for the eve of the event on Friday night. Mark your calendar for this event now. More information will be provided at kcmbca.org and in upcoming issues of der Benz!

“Not Just a Road Trip But An Adventure” 2015 Chicago to Key West

First-Sunday Drive to Norm’s Place The First-Sunday Drive for May 4th be a drive to Raymore, Missouri to the home of KC Section member Norm Kressmann. This is a special treat for those of us who enjoy seeing classic cars. Norm owns several cars besides his Mercedes-Benz, which are worthy of the best of Concours d’Elegance and classic car museums. Plan to go to this Sunday Drive in May. It will be a good one.

Ehinger Auto Collection Tour March 22 On Saturday morning, March 22nd we are invited to see the private antique automobile and memorabilia collection of Bob Ehinger. Mr. Ehinger is providing complimentary coffee and donuts for our enjoyment, too. The open house is from 9:00 AM to Noon. Photography is allowed, so bring the good camera as well as the cell phone. This is a “must-see / mustdo” KC Section event. The car collection is said to be outstanding. Don’t miss it. The address is 1733 Walnut St., Kansas City, Mo.

Upgrade and Makeover is complete for Section Website kcmbca.org If you’ve visited our website lately, you’ve undoubtedly noticed a new look and feel to www.kcmbca.org Our Webmaster, John Ryan, has spent the last few weeks updating the site to a new format using “Joomla!”, a popular content management system used by thousands of personal, corporate, and organization websites around the world. Our former site was built using SkyPortal software in the mid-1990’s, and the software’s author now longer supports the product with technical and design updates. With the vast user base of Joomla!, as well as independent third party technicians pledged to Joomla’s success, we should experience ongoing support for the website. You’ll notice when visiting the site that it has a cleaner and more modern look, and more closely resembles the national MBCA and other section websites. This look and feel should help to create a more uniform look and continuity for MBCA communications with its members. And, you should notice that our site now has a live newsfeed from the MBCA with news about everything Mercedes-Benz. There’s also a great calendar to track all the Kansas City section events, and a reminder section of the upcoming events. If you’re a facebook user, you’ll also see the trending topics from MBCA|Kansas City’s facebook pages. You’ll probably notice that the “forums” feature of the website has been removed. Social media has become the new medium for website interaction, and we encourage you interact with fellow members using our facebook pages. While we’re mentioning facebook, we must congratulate Ian Harns for a great job getting us on track with social media. If you are a user of facebook, please visit and like our page, https://www.facebook.com/kcmbca, and keep up to the minute with MBCA|Kansas City news. Keep checking the website regularly as more features are added. If you have contributions, please email John Ryan at grownup@kcmbca.org
