Art Exhibition Brief: Create a temporary indoor/outdoor art exhibition space underneath the HighLine in New York City. This Thi was part of a 6-week design competition for placement in an advanced design class.

Inspired, by some degree, by Santiago Calatrava’s Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in Spain; my concept came from the human eye, more specifically; the artist’s eye. The gallery represents how the artist views New York (his interpretation of the world). This manifests itself in the front facade, representing “the artist’s eye gazing out”. The eye itself, built of a series of glass panels angled to represent the semi-spherical eye, and bleached plywood hanging vertically from the HIGHLINE curved, to represent the eyelashes. This feature also significantly solves the problem of giving the gallery a street presence and a focal point from far down the block. Once in the gallery, the ceiling panels begin shaping the rooms of the gallery, creating spaces where the artists can exhibit their ideas and art work.

CTBUH: WHY TALL? international competition Brief: The competition aims to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society from the perspective of green, safety, and humanity. Concept: To build a structurally organic mixed-use high-rise that explores the feasibility of a vertical green house in an urban environment, and connects to the exconnect isting fabric of the city.
