This project originated

from a competition. The objective was to redesign the current and aging public space known as Hart Plaza, which is the center of Detroit on the Detroit River. The main idea was to bring people back to the city center with a improved design which can hold music festivals and other public events while utilizing the river.

ART

My design was about using the entire space and allowing visitors to move freely through out the

B

park. Curved paths, gardens, and open lawn areas create a recreational value, along with an aesthetically pleasing space. An amphitheater sits in the center of the space for music concerts and other events. A boardwalk sits along the riverfront with the addition of a native and natural marsh to attract local wildlife.

This project pertains to the tragic events at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Through the assistance of the Natick Massachusetts Fire Department, our class was involved in a project in which we had to design a 40 by 40 foot site in front of the Natick Fire Station serve as a “9/11 memorial. The main focus was a steel beam which was recovered from ground zero in New York City. A dedication was created to police, firemen and citizens lost on that tragic day.

I wanted to create a memorial that fully focuses on the beam with an enclosed planting of flowering magnolia trees along side a seating wall. Inside the space sits the beam which is raised above a small pool. Dedication plaques sit on edge of the pool facing

up.

A This site is located at the Ashaway public Library. The goal was to redesign the open area on the northwest side of the library. With the use of a garden pathway and open lawn area, I designed a space for reading and relaxation within an aesthetically pleasing site.

To the left is an image of the pathway surrounding the library. It portrays the path leading to the courtyard. Flowering plants line the brick pathway to add a sense of direction and to beautify the site. This path allows visitors to use the whole site while enjoying the vegetation and nature. A library attracts people of all ages from old to young. This site is designed appropriately for the general population

B On the east side of the Library, is a courtyard with an outdoor seating area and a small stage. This stage also acts as a pergola type structure for shade. Behind the stage is a fountain for children to enjoy the water in the warmer months. A wildflower garden is also in the courtyard. This is a space for readers and other visitors to enjoy a book on a nice day. It is also connected to the walkway which surrounds the library.

An area will be surrounded by boardwalk and will have access by foot to the marshland. Exploration can be done of the natural landscape with the assistance of a Naturalist to promote a educational factor. Kayakers may dock and walk along the boardwalk. As an attempt to reduce damage during a storm, a floating dock will be built of areas that the boardwalk crosses water. The boardwalk will also include a Estuary and kayak docking area to connect all recreational activities of the pond into one node.

B

Recreation is a great way to utilize the natural landscape. I have designed a boardwalk that would sit on the outer edge of Winnapaug Pond. It would include great views of the pond with multiple access from a bike path on Atlantic Avenue. The bike path could surround the entire pond resting along local roadways and traveling through the heart of Misquamicut.

Natural disasters have been troublesome to this part of the state. The objective was to design methods that would ease the destruction of the built and natural landscape on the shore. Recreational and educational factors were also considered in the design. A boardwalk and bike path system was included along with a bioswale along the main road.

D Visitors of all ages can enjoy the

C

estuary. It creates a great location to enjoy after or before the beach. Kayakers enjoy an easier way to dock . This works well on the pond which is much less intense than the ocean.

My design is intended to be multifunctional and able to sustain its structure and components during the threat of sea-level rise and natural disasters. A terraced lawn area borders the ocean with one foot intervals. As the ocean rises during tides, the water will engulf the lawn area before receding back to sea level. This will change each level to have a different ecological feel. It also allows visitors to reach the water. Location Newport, Rhode Island

Here is a view from the Goat Island Causeway looking towards the park. I used a curvilinear amphitheaters design to create an equal amount of space. Different levels also create different spaces within the park. Trees create shade along the edge of the path and onto the first tier of the lawn space.

On the Washington Street side of the park sits a basketball court. On either side of the court is a rain garden for collecting storm water and will act as a spill way if the ocean rises high enough. A cafe area sits at the main entrance and a beach is formed off the original pier for more recreational access to the ocean.

Directly adjacent to he Hope Dining Hall on the University of Rhode Island Kingston campus sits a river. My goal was to have a planting design that would attract students to observe the river and its natural beauty. An increase in aesthetics using an array of plants helps improve the image of the campus.

CONSTRUCTION

DETAILS

During the summer of 2013, I was an intern for a Landscape Architecture firm in Newport, Rhode Island called Katherine Field and Associates. At the firm I learned a little of everything in the profession from rendering, to construction, to the conceptual phases of a project. My tasks during my internship included rendering of masterplans, performing corrections on construction details, and some time out in the field.

The plans on the previous page were designed and drafted by other employees of the firm, while I used photoshop to render them. The other image is of me holding a measuring rod to show scale of the surroundings at a project site. I also was fortunate enough to shadow another employee from the firm during a bid with a contractor. By doing so, I learned how the bid process works. When planting plans were designed, it was my job on occasion to create a planting plan presentation, to show the plants to the client.
