Square Clouds in a High Sky A collection of painted ceramic vessels by John Newdigate

Ebony, Franschhoek, October 2016

Triggering inspiration by constantly shifting shape and colour, clouds determine our mood and indicate change.

This collection of 24 painted ceramic vessels is about my relationship with the changing landscape around me and the life-forms that inhabit it. The contrast between natural and artificial spaces is most apparent where they meet, highlighting the contradiction of our species’ reliance on the natural world while simultaneously endeavouring to control it. Gardens show mastery over the natural world, creating a benign and controlled version of the seemingly chaotic natural world. This artifice requires constant attention to maintain which makes it a powerful metaphor for other aspects of our lives and how we contrive to be perceived by the world.
