Dealing with someone having a heart attack is scary, but it’s important to remain calm and take control. It may save their life.

SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK Pain or fullness in the chest Discomfort that radiates from the heart to the arm and up to the jaw Dizziness Sweating Nausea Shortness of breath Pain lasts for more than 15 minutes

MOST PEOPLE HAVE WARNING SIGNS THAT HAPPEN HOURS, DAYS OR EVEN WEEKS BEFORE THE EVENT OCCURS.

STEPS TO HELP SOMEONE DURING A HEART ATTACK CALL 9-1-1 Don’t try to determine what is or isn’t occurring, especially if there is no medical training. If no emergency services are available, then call someone for help in getting to the hospital. A person should never drive themselves during this event.

STEPS TO HELP SOMEONE DURING A HEART ATTACK GIVE THEM AN ASPRIN It’s medically proven that aspirin can save a life in the middle of a heart attack. Even if the person is unresponsive, then put it under their tongue. If a person is allergic or has been told by their physician not to take aspirin, then avoid this step.

STEPS TO HELP SOMEONE DURING A HEART ATTACK BEGIN CPR Depending on the severity, an individual may pass out during a heart attack. If the person is unconscious, then begin CPR procedures. A 911 operator can help if there is no proper training. Start by giving around 100-120 chest compressions per minute.

STEPS TO HELP SOMEONE DURING A HEART ATTACK USE A AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR If a person passes out from a heart attack at a place of business or in a facility that has an automated external defibrillator, then follow the instructions and begin using it to resuscitate them. These machines are dangerous so make sure to follow the directions precisely.

Those who have a heart condition may have a prescription for nitroglycerin. This medication can help to keep them alive and keep the heart from suffering. Never take or give these drugs to anyone except for whom they are prescribed.
