August Dedications The building continues in 2010 as Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity dedicates two Waverly homes in July and prepares to dedicate 3 more Waterloo homes in August. As Habitat prepares to close on 3 houses, it marks the beginning of more homes to come. Habitat’s goal is to build or rehab 10 to 12 home per year. With 5 homes already completed in 2010, volunteers, families and staff are well on their way to meeting that goal. August marks the completion of Habitats 86th, 87th and 88th homes in a service area that covers Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler Counties. Families must complete 300 hours of sweat equity, including homeowner education classes and credit counseling, before moving into their homes. Home dedications not only mark the completion of a new home but the start of a new journey for families, most of whom are first time home buyers.
330 Oneida Street Tamara Bradford was first approved for the Habitat program in January, 2009. With hard work and dedication she has completed her sweat equity hours and continues to work on her home located at 330 Oneida Street in Waterloo; the third Habitat home built on the corner of Oneida and Jackson. Tamara, her son Lawrence, age 6 and her niece LaRintia, age 8 are moving out of an apartment into a Habitat home with plenty of children in the neighborhood to become friends with. “Being a homeowner is a dream come true. To be able to live in a home that I help build and to call my own is something I thought I would never be able to do. A home that my son can grow up in, a yard he can play in, steps he can sit on, it’s the small things that are big to me. And without Habitat none of this would be possible,” say Tamara about the near completion of her new Habitat home. Help the Bradford family celebrate their new home by attending their home dedication on Wednesday, August 18 at 4:00, along with many volunteers from local churches who helped build. . 2
Also celebrating a home dedication on August 18 at 5:00 is Kim Spates and her daughters, Tyliah, age 7 and Nyasia, age 3. Kim, who is employed by Harmony House in Waterloo, has helped build and will purchase Habitat’s 4th Women Build house located at 659 Lunar Lane in Waterloo. Kim says, "Never let being a woman limit what you can accomplish," as she “If you are willing to work hard for works along side many women it, your dreams can come true." volunteers from churches, social groups and businesses throughout Black Hawk County. Kim’s new home is the 4th Habitat home built in the Solar Drive/Lunar Lane neighborhood.
1137 Leavitt Street With funding from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP), Habitat was able to purchase an existing property, located at 1137 Leavitt Street in Waterloo. Volunteers from St. Pats Church in Cedar Falls, who volunteer on Tuesdays with Habitat, have helped Jackie White rehab this home. When finished, it will have a lot of character found in most older homes. Jackie was able to request Tuesdays off of work "I never worked on a house before and now, to build along side volunteers you name it, and I’ve done it. I've not only who have helped re-roof, inworked here but on other homes. I think it's a real learning experience." stall new windows, lay new flooring, gut and redo the kitchen, and paint the exterior a cheery yellow to match the already existing garage. In a few short months, the house is ready to become a home for Jackie and her two boys, DeVanta, age 13, and Raequan, age 10. The home dedication for the White family is on Friday, August 27 at 3:00. Hope to see you there. 3

Road Trip continued
The tour will start with the home dedication of 330 Oneida, Waterloo at 4 pm. This Habitat home build led by Del Carpenter has seen Wednesday and Saturday work with primarily church crews and is the home of Tamara Bradford and two children.
659 Lunar Lane, Waterloo will be our next stop for the 5 pm home dedication of this year’s Women Build, home of Kim Spates and her two daughters. Women crews have been working on Thursdays and Saturdays since March 27th with Steve King as leader. This home joins three other Habitat homes in the neighborhood of Solar Drive/Lunar Lane.
We will try to get in as many Habitat homes on the tour as possible but the tour will end by 8 pm at the starting point in Waterloo. The tour will certainly include the current Cedar Falls build, Habitat’s oldest neighborhood on Florence Street and our NSP homes in progress in Waterloo.

Jennifer Heeren started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity after the 2008 disasters that swept through Butler County. When Iowa Heartland expanded into Butler County to help build with a family devastated by the floods, Jennifer stepped in as the Volunteer Coordinator for their county. With the second Butler County home underway in Parkersburg, Jennifer has continued to round up volunteer crews to help build. Despite this rainy summer, volunteers in Parkersburg have made good progress for the September completion of the Butler County home. Jennifer has been very successful in lining up work crews for Wednesdays and Saturdays through July. Volunteer crews are still needed for Wednesdays and Saturdays in August and September. To volunteer in Butler County, contact Jennifer Heeren at email@example.com. Also playing a valuable role in the building of Butler County homes are the members from the Butler County Steering Team. Active members include: Jennifer Heeren, Shelene Codner, Virgil Goodrich, Mary Johnson, Jim and Mary Norton, Jane Close, Clint Ackerson, John Schwennen and Don and Evelyn Bliss. Team members have helped get the word out about Habitat for Humanity by contacting local newspapers and community members, setting up displays at local libraries, taking part in the Butler County Fair and participating in the Shell Rock 4th of July Parade. At the Butler County Fair, volunteers raised money by playing games and raffling a play house donated by Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa. When RAGBRAI went through Parkersburg on July 29th, the Habitat home was featured by signs and information so that many bikers could get a good look at our Habitat home. Thank you to Jennifer, the Butler County Steering Team and all the volunteers who make it possible for Habitat to build simple, decent and affordable homes for families in need. Karen & Dana Anderson

Habitat Staff- John Tschetter John Tschetter started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity after the flood of 2008 as a member of the Green A m e r i C o r p s group. Along with other members, he worked on energy conservation and flood recovery for Black Hawk County. Green AmeriCorps has become a key partner with Habitat. Their members get construction training on the Habitat job site and Habitat gets a consistent weekly volunteer crew. When John’s term with AmeriCorps was up, he was hired by Habitat for Humanity as a second Site Supervisor in January, 2010. With the help of another Site Supervisor, Habitat is able to take more volunteer crews and build more homes with families
