Project Brief The St. Ambrose University Wellness & Recreation Center was the largest single building project in school history. The 3 groups of users for this space include University Athletics, Campus Recreation and Kinesiology Departments. It was important to create a space where these 3 “roommates could effectively utilize a building conceived as a space for overall wellness. Through use of color, space, and finestration, this building creates an atmosphere capable of facilitating exercise and growth for spirit, soul, and body.

2

Design Process The exterior design developed around the idea of a transparent connector between two massive blocks. The visible commons area would act as the transition piece between old and new construction. By hand-sketching various iterations of exterior facade treatment, as well as quick schematic Sketchup modeling, the design team began to develop a dialogue with the owner about the exterior aesthetic of the building. In a similar way on the interior, we began by working with shapes, forms, and colors which alluded to the St. Ambrose mascot, “The Fighting Bees. Shown on the following pages are initial images representing materiality and branding opportunities present in this unique space.

Control Desk Design One of the first things seen when entering the building is the control desk, and it serves an important function as a sign-in point for the students. The interior architectural elements were based on the integration of school colors, hexagon theme and dramatic lighting.

Project Brief The Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Project involves the addition of a 2-story medical clinic to dramatically increase the health care services provided for the area. The program includes a renovated registration suite, multiple outpatient exam rooms, Physical Therapy, and Rehabilitiation. Exterior design was influenced by a natural material palette and complements the existing hospital building’s predominantly blonde brick facade.

Project Brief The Coachlight Plaza Spa & Clinic is a 12,000 SF full service Spa and Cosmetic Surgery center located in a thriving area of West Des Moines. The interior and exterior was designed to evoke the feel of luxury and elegance. Based on concepts from high-end boutique shops from Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the facade adheres to the local PUD requirements, while still providing a look of refinement. Unique design features include the limestone facade of the curved entry and the spiral cool-down showers in the men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Program & Adjacency Diagram Programming & Schematic Design Revit

Programming & Exterior Design Development Uncommon to our firm, the program of this facility lead to many in-depth discussions regarding adjacencies and functionality. These design sessions were conducted with a specialized consultant to understand the levels of finish required throughout the building, and especially in the spa areas. The combination of spa and clinic spaces also required an intentional separation between public and private space, as well as confidentiality and independent separation for clients of either functions. The entry of the building developed from the idea of a curved mass wall feature that was “sculpted” to allow various penetrations and voids into the building. This gradually developed an entry piece that allowed more light into the space while still maintaining a monolithic aesthetic.

Project Brief The Dowling Catholic High School Administration Renovation was the final phase of the school’s “We Believe” capital campaign and involved 10,200 SF of renovation that included staff offices, reception areas, nurse office, conference rooms, as well as staff break and work rooms. This project was tasked with an agressive 75-day construction schedule which allowed for the entire job to be completed over the summer break. The speed and communication between the contractor and design team on this remodel earned a nomination for a Master Builder’s of Iowa Award.

Project Brief The Northcrest Community Repositioning Project is a more than 190,000 SF expansion to an existing Senior Living Facility in Ames, IA. The program consists of Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, Independent Living, and a multipurpose facility with dining capabilities. Since it’s inception in the 1960’s, the existing campus has been known for it’s unique architectural appearance, which has become a major marketing strategy for Northcrest’s directors. It is the owner’s directive that the new buildings match the existing character of campus, while responding appropriately to the new program. The Independent Living Building’s undulating facade and sloped roofs refer to the original architecture on campus.

Exterior Design Process While examining the existing campus and looking for design cues that our building should mirror, the design team identified 5 design guidelines which would maintain continuity throughout campus. These were: 1. Maintain a brick datum line across the first level of all buildings 2. Emulate the ratio of window openings to facade 3. Integrate shed roofs and clerestory windows 4. Match the vertical lines and materiality which are prevalent on campus 5. Create solid/ void spaces on the exterior facade During schematic design pricing excercises, it was determined that the 2 separate Independent Living Apartments could be combined to save approximately $2.1M. This resulted in a larger, 4 story 48 Unit IL building.
