Instructional Programs for Ages 2-18 Julyâ€”September 2013
SKIESUnlimited General Information Registration All youth enrolling in any SKIES programs MUST be current CYS Services members. Participation in classes will be denied if registration is not current, with no reimbursement for paid programs. There is no fee for enrollment, but this must be updated every year (registration will expire after one year, and youth will be denied access to the programs until registration is updated). Application packets can be picked up from Parent Central Services at Clark Hall or on the web at www.drummwr.com . Youth must carry their enrollment key FOBS with them to sign in to and out of our programs. Youth in grades 6-12 may sign themselves in and out of our programs. School Age students must have a parent sign them in and out. For more information on CYS Services, please contact Parent Central Services at 772-8675.
Enrollment in Classes and Programs Youth must enroll in programs and classes prior to the registration deadline date. All fees must be paid at the time of enrollment. Programs that are billed montly will be billed on the 15th or each month for the upcoming month. All billed fees must be paid by the 1st of the month for the student to participate. If fees are not paid by the 1st, the student will not be able to participate in class and will be removed from the class roster.
Disenrollment All youth MUST be disenrolled from each monthly program they are registered in where charges are billed automatically. Charges do continue for each space occupied until a disenrollment form is submitted, and parents will be responsible for paying the bills. Programs needing disenrollment forms include gymnastics, taekwondo, and may include others - please confirm at the time of registration. Please submit forms to our office at 10790 Chapel Drive.
Payments... Can be made at our office, any Child Care or Youth facility, or at Parent Central Services. Ensure the staff make the payment toward your SKIES program bill. If you are choosing to use the Army Family Covenant to pay for any of the monthly billed SKIES programs, PLEASE contact our office after the 15th of each month so we can ensure your payment is processed. AFC benefits will pay out any one-time fees when enrollment is completed (up to the limit set). Parents are responsible for any bills remaining after the benefits have been applied.
You can also do business with CYS Services on-line! Make appointments with Parent Central Services, pay your outstanding balances, sign up for most of the programs offered by SKIES, access registration forms, reprint receipts, and print childcare statements for taxes. Simply go to www.drummwr.com & click on the link near the top left side of the page. Visit or call Parent Central Services if you need assistance or a login name and password (772-8675).

For Ages 12 & up
Babysitting and Red Cross CPR & First Aid will help train youth to be responsible babysitters. Youth must attend all sessions if complete certification is sought. No fee for this program. Dates & Times: Monday, 24 June—1:00-4:00 pm Wednesday, 26 June—1:00-4:00 pm Thursday, 27 June—12:30-4:30 pm All classes will be held at the SKIES classroom, 10790 Chapel Drive. Registration deadline is 13 June or until filled - Parents must call if youth cannot make a class they are registered for - if youth do not show up for classes, they will not be allowed to register again.
Pottery & Ceramics Clay 101
– Open to students in grades K-12. Clay 101 is
an introduction to clay using hand-building techniques. Each student is required to take this class to learn the very basics in using clay and all the machines in the pottery area. Class fee is $5, and needs to be taken only once. Thursdays- Time: 4:15-5 pm. Registration deadline is one week prior to class.
Clay - Hand-Building Classes (Clay 101 required upon enrollment in classes) Classes will consist of an assortment of projects that make up the beginning stages of hand-building with clay. Each class consists of construction of the project and glazing. Students will be able to take the piece home after it has been fired (students will be notified when pieces are ready). Ceramic pieces completed by students will be eligible for showing in local art exhibits. Cost is $15 per class, and includes clay, glazing and firing. Registration deadline is one week prior to the class date. Grades K-12 - Thursdays, 5:00-7:00 pm
Clay – Open Studio (Open to Grades 6-12 who have taken either Clay 101 or Clay 201). Studio time is designed to give the student ample time to design, work on and complete projects of their own design. Open Studio Time consists of 10 hours of use of the pottery studio and equipment, 12 pounds of clay, all glazing, and firing for projects created. Students will receive a punch card, and have space in the studio for their clay and projects underway. Cost for each card is $50.00, and is good for six months from purchase. Students will also be able to purchase extra clay if they need to (12 pound block for $10.00 or 25 pound block for $19.00) . Open Studio — Thursdays, 1-4 pm—Please call to verify that staff are available.
Creative Movement Dance Classes $20 per month Ages 3-5 Dance classes for tots and preschoolers to teach the basics in beginning dance. Students will work with music to develop their large motor skills, and work with rhythm and beats. Tuesdays, Fee $20 per student per month. 3 year olds - 5:00-5:30 pm 4 year olds - 5:45-6:15 pm 5 year olds - 6:30-7:00 pm Parents must remain in the facility during classes. Register by the 28th of the current month for the next month’s program.

Taekwondo classes from Tehonica’s Taekwondo & Hapkido Academy from the Watertown area. Classes meet twice a week - Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Times: White Belts - 6:00-6:45 pm Yellow Belts - 6:45-7:30 pm Green, Blue, Red, Black Belts - 7:30-8:15 pm Once enrolled, monthly fees are billed at $70.00 per student and must be paid by the 1st of each month. Billing is on the 15th of the current month, and is for the upcoming month’s program. Bills not paid by the 1st will result in students being removed from class. Uniform fee is due to the instructor at the first class. Youth are also encouraged to take part in the Martial Arts Competitions that are held throughout the year. Participation in competitions is voluntary. All classes are held at the Riva Ridge Center, 10799 N. Riva Ridge Loop.

Gymnastics and Tumbling All classes are MONTHLY. Youth must be enrolled each month if they wish to continue with classes. Classes to fill quickly, so enroll early. All classes are held at Riva Ridge Center, 10799 N. Riva Ridge Loop.
Gymminy Crickets $35 month
Parent/Tot class for ages 3-4. Parents will work with their children to help teach them the fundamentals of tumbling while developing their coordination, strength, agility, balance and selfconfidence. Parents are required to work with their children on the mats - please dress comfortably. There are no accommodations for siblings, so please make other arrangements for them. Preschool program for ages 4-5. This class lays the groundwork for gymnastics progressions while introducing basic gymnastics skills on the floor and the balance beam. Beginner gymnastics class for students entering into the sport. Students will learn the basics in tumbling, vault, and balance beam. Sewing Classes Required Classes—Sewing 101 & 102
Sewing 101 - Hand Sewing
Ages 6 & up
(Required class for all other sewing classes). Hand sewing techniques are used at all levels of sewing. Students learn basic stitches that they will use in many of the sewing classes offered. Sewing 102 - Machine Sewing
Ages 6 & up
(Required class for all other sewing classes). Learn how to use the sewing machines we will be utilizing in all our Sewing Classes. Students will be instructed on proper use of a machine, how to fix tension, thread machines, roll bobbins, and set stitching features. Tuesdays, Choose date—only one class date is required. 16 July; 30 July; 20 August; 24 September; Time 5-6:30 pm. Registration deadline is one week prior to class date.
Sew-Kool Club PREREQUISITE: Sewing 101 AND Sewing 102. Enjoy a casual learning environment as we hand-sew, cut fabrics, make sewn crafts, and use sewing machines. Students work at their pace on projects of their choosing—staff are available to assist as needed. Some supplies may need to be purchased by the students. AGES 6-10—Tuesdays, 5:30-7 pm, Cost $35 per month. AGES 11-18—Wednesdays, 5-7 pm, Cost $40 per month. Registration deadline is the 28th of the current month for the next month’s program.
Kids in Motion
Ages 2 & 3
Designed for toddlers to help them with coordination, motor development, following directions, and playing with other children the same age. Program mixes activities that utilize music, dance, athletic skills and tumbling. Parents are required to work with their children on the mats - please dress comfortably. There are no accommodations for siblings, so please make other arrangements for them. Tuesdays, Time: 11:15-11:45 am; OR 3:15-3:45 pm Registration deadline is the 28th of the current month for the next month’s program. All classes will be held at the Riva Ridge Center, 10799 N. Kids in the Kitchen $35 month Ages 7 & up Education about nutrition and great food combination, new recipes, fun snacks, measuring, and how to cut and chop food safely. Best part— students get to eat their creations! Register by the 28th of each month for the upcoming month’s program. Fridays, 5-7 pm. July 5-12-19-26; August 2-9-16-23; September 6-13-20-27.
All About Theater
Ages 6 & up
Classes are designed to help develop skills needed by all ages to perform on the stage. Each week students will utilize charades, araoke, skits, and vocal activities to develop their stage prescence. Month-long program—can be repeated as often as students like as each week will focus on different skills. Register by 28 August. Thursdays, 5-7 pm. September 5-12-19-26.
ART CLASSES Stained Glass and Glass Fusion— Learn to use glass in a new way - how to safely cut, melt and use glass in artistic ways while using all the equipment safely.
Drawing Basics - Learn the basics in drawing with pencils—lines, perspective, shading, and form.
Jewelry Basics - Learn the basics of jewelry-making in these introductory classes. Students will make a simple project while learning basic techniques.
Painting - Classes will teach basic concepts in the specified paint each class. Students will work with strokes, blending, color and form.
Handcrafts - A variety of handcraft arts will be taught throughout the year— crocheting, knitting, embroidery, plastic canvas, needlepoint and more.

Summer Reading Programs with McEwen Library Summer Theme: “HAVE BOOK—WILL TRAVEL!” Summer Kick-Off Party! - Saturday, 15 June, 1:30-3 pm at McEwen Library. Register at the McEwen Library prior to 15 June. Youth will get credit for reading over the summer, and can win prizes just for reading books! SKIES will be there offering a class in “Creative Journaling”, to help log the travels of “Flat BOB”.
Scrapbooking “Flat BOB” - Monday, 15 July, 5-7 pm at McEwen Library. Free class on beginning scrapbooking as you work to log all of your Flat BOB travels. Please bring Flat BOB photographs, misc. art supplies (ribbon, paper, fabric, stickers, etc). Some craft items will be available to use, but feel free to bring all sorts of scrapbook items to share! Pseudo-Steampunk Jewelry - Monday, 29 July, 5-7 pm at McEwen Library. Free for ages 10 & up that are enrolled in the Summer Reading Program! Create crazy jewelry that encompasses all times and worlds using gears, wires and any scrap yard finds. Youth may bring old analog clocks, broken watches, or other small broken items with gears and wires. Items will be broken apart, and all the inside workings used to build a piece of jewelry. GeoCache Adventures - Youth and Parents! Learn how to have fun looking for treasure! Introduction night teaches how to find information on the caches, use GPS units to track, and how to search for the cache. Day trip explores local cache runs and everyone is on the search! Monday, 8 July—Intro @ Parks & Rec, 6-8 pm. Wednesday, 10 July—Geocache Outing, 9-4 pm. Cost for 2-day program—$10 per person; Parent/Youth team - $18.00 per duo. Special Summer Multi-Day Programs Sewing FUNdamentals Ages 6 -8...Learn basics in sewing with hand needles and sewing machines, using simple patterns, cutting and making projects. Register by 2 July. 8-10 July (Mon-Wed), 1-3 pm, Cost $40.00 (includes all supplies). Ages 9-15...Students will learn basics in sewing along with a few tricks, learn about fabric, using sergers, cutting patterns, and assembling projects. Plein Air Art Ages 12-18...Learn the basics in drawing and painting while studying subjects in the out-of-doors. Students will work in the natural environment of Remington Park both days. Drop off and pick up of students is at Remington Park. Cost for either session is $40.00 (includes all supplies), and is from 1-4 pm each day. 11-12 July (Thurs-Fri), Register by 2 July. 15-16 August (Thurs-Fri), Register by 5 August.
Theater Week Ages 9-18...Learn about performing on the stage, voice projection, set design and making costumes. Students will perform a mini-skit for parents on Thursday at 3 pm. 22-25 July (Mon-Thurs), 12-4 pm, Cost $65.00. Register by 15 July.
Project WILD Ages 6-10...The woods, insects, trees and animals come alive as you learn about them while enjoying Remington Park with activities, games, and a lot of fun. Drop off and pick up of students will be at Remington Park. 29-31 July (Mon-Wed), 1-4 pm, Cost $50.00. Register by 22 July.
Stained Glass Ages 12-18...Make stained glass pieces and learn to cut and design, and piece back together. Glass is broken and used in projects, so injury from cuts is a possibility. 1-2 August (Thurs-Fri), 12-4 pm, Cost $50.00 (includes all supplies). Register by 22 July.
Sewing—High End Fashion - Low End Budget Ages 10-18...Learn how to create great fashions from older clothes on a shoestring budget! Great for teens who want their clothing to be just a bit different, but very fashionable. Sewing 101 and 102 is required before enrolling. Youth will need to bring some old t-shirts, jeans or other clothing that can be cut apart and made into something new. Supplemental items needed will be supplied. 6-8 August (Tues-Thurs), 1-4 pm, Cost $55.00, Register by 29 July.
Native Ways Ages 6-12...Learn about the Native American Indian culture through stories, crafts, games and activities in the woods. Drop off and pick up of students will be at Remington Park. 12-14 August (Mon-Wed), 1-4 pm, Cost $40.00. Register by 5 August.
Common Scents Soaps & Candles Ages 12-18...Basic instruction in how to make soap, lotion, candles and more. Students will bring home all the items they create. 19-22 August (Mon-Thurs), 1-4 pm, Cost $60.00. Register by 5 August.
Sunship Earth Ages 6-12...Become a steward of the earth in this fun environmental education program—activities, hikes, games and crafts help teach about nature, recycling, and taking care of our planet. Drop off and pick up of students is at Remington Park. 27-29 August (Tues-Thurs), 1-4 pm, Cost $40.00. Register by 19 August.
Legends & Lore Ages 10-18...Ever wonder about monsters in the closet or ghosts wandering through our world? Learn about some local legends and lore as we explore Fort Drum and local community legends, and decide if they are real...or just a legend… Program includes discussions and 3 trips to local haunts.
