First Sawmill in Sandy By Kaye Wright 11/9/11 In 1906, John Strauss and W. A. Proctor and partners, formed Sandy Fir Lumber Co., the first sawmill in Sandy, Oregon. Proctor, being more of a businessman, ended up going into banking and owned the Sandy Clackamas County Bank. Shortly after departing from the Sandy Fir Lumber Company, Strauss and Proctor ended up being best of friends right-up until Strauss passed away. When Strauss retired from the Sandy Lumber business, he moved from the beautiful house he had built on Boitano Road to a grapefruit farm in what is now downtown San Diego, CA. As he got older, he decided to come back to Sandy and live out the rest of his life. Strauss talked to Eugenia Boitano about buying his beautiful house back on Boitano Road, offering more than it was worth, but Eugenia loved the place and wouldn’t part with it. Strauss bought a place on Trubel Road and raised strawberries. His home caught fire in the 1930’s and with the insurance, he had another house built, it still stands today. Strauss is buried on property that he donated for the first Sandy Ridge School, he also donated the property where the Sandy Grade School is today. He gave land to several families on Bornstedt and Trubel Roads – their families still own and live on those properties today.

Strauss passed away in 1937, leaving money for scholarships for Sandy High graduates. It is amazing that 74+ years later there are still scholarships available because of the kindness of John Strauss and the adept handling of the money by W.A. Proctor. Wouldn’t life be a lot easier with generous men like Strauss & Proctor.
