Can I get health insurance for a newborn baby? The day your baby is born is one of the most joyous days of your life. However, it is also a day where major responsibilities fall upon your shoulders. As parents, you need to do all you can to provide your child with a bright future. Part of this means ensuring their healthcare needs are always met. A health insurance plan goes a long way in making sure of this. However, health insurance for newborns isn’t as straightforward as you think. In fact, different insurance companies approach the topic differently. Keeping this in mind, the following article will go over some of the basics regarding health insurance for newborns. Hopefully, it will help you make strong and better-informed insurance decisions for your little one. To answer the question at hand: Can you get health insurance for a newborn baby? Well, yes and no - this because most insurance companies will not provide separate policies for a newborn baby. However, if you have group insurance or family floater policy, most insurers will allow you to add the child under the same. Of course, the premium for the plan will increase and you the baby might also have to meet certain criteria to be eligible.

Minimum age of the baby. Most health insurance companies will allow you to add the child to the insurance only if he/she is above 90 days of age. This is because the initial few days are considered are the riskiest and so insurers hesitate to provide insurance before the child is 3 months old. However, this waiting period differs from one insurance company to the next. Some will have a longer waiting period whereas others will have much shorter waiting periods.

What if I don’t want to wait 90 days? You will be glad to know that there are a number of health insurance policies that will cover a newborn baby right from the day they are born. They just require that you intimate them of the child’s birth within one week of the same. Some companies also offer indirect protection through the ‘Maternity’ or ‘Newborn’ add-ons. If you are thinking about having a baby, it makes sense to include this add-on in advance. You can do so when renewing your policy. Documents required: Of course, you will need to submit documents relating to your child’s birth to the insurance company. These documents usually include a copy of the birth certificate, the mother’s discharge certificate and any reports provided by the hospital. Even though it’s early days, some health insurance companies will require you to submit a photograph as well. So when you find out that you are expecting or if you’re thinking of having a baby, it makes sense to sit down with your health insurance provider and figure how to best go about things. Preparing and planning beforehand will ensure things will move along smoothly when your baby enters this world. We hope this article has been helpful and many congratulations on your little one!
